Toulouse - Ville Rose

The St Sernin church illuminates the night, a coral flower drenched by the sun. That's why, despite your red and black, they call you the Ville Rose

Claude Nougaro

It really is not pink, but sort of redish-brown, but that is besides the point. Toulouse is one of those places that you visit and wonder why is it so underrated and indeed forgotten by the visitors..? It is the fourth largest city of France but receives less tourists than its smaller neighbour - Bordeaux! Why? Fcuk knows, frankly...perhaps that's for the best - never been a fan of crowds, tour groups and the usual assortment of louts on stag-dos and Instagram queens. The distinctive colour gives the city a distinctive feel, especially when the sun is out and the look and colours change almost every hour. Photographer's dream. Also flaneur's. You just have to love the way shadows move across the narrow streets flanked by handsome buildings - some restored and some not. Creating ever changing spectacle for the eyes. The place is made for walking. There's barely any cars in the centre. You use the bike, your legs or take the metro. It is made for lounging and enjoying life too, as almost every street inevitably leads you to somewhere where exciting things happen. Drinking. Eating. This is France. They do this exceptionally well, it would be a shame for you not to join in....

1. Capitole de Toulouse. It is the main square, so might as well start here, especially that we stayed here too. We arrived on a Saturday and the city was overflowing with police in full riot gear who were obviously expecting trouble and taking no chances. Thankfully apart from a few drunk morons trying to destroy a street sign, trouble did not materialise!

2. Once upon a time, long ago here stood a sprawling Carmelite monastery, but only this tiny Chapel has survived the ravages of time...and thank goodness for that as it is truly one of the wonders of Baroque in Europe. It is modest, even bland on the outside...

3. but once you're inside....

4.

5.

6.

7. As I said in the beginning the city has a very distinctive feel. The colour and those shutters give it a relaxed, almost country-side feel.

8.

9.

10. These buildings are lining the riverbanks of the Garonne river. Really beautiful.

11.

12. Basilica of Saint-Sernin is an absolutely massive and glorious building. It is in fact the largest surviving Romanesque building in Europe. It is simply impossible to do it justice with a camera. You need to see it in person. You need to give it time. You need to explore it inside and out.

13. A beautiful and very tall tower of the Basilica.

14.

15.

16. There are some fantastic details there. You just need to look!

17. Beautiful. The care and attention that went into creating these buildings is incredible.

18. More random details around the city now!

19. The 16th century Hôtel de Bernuy. Toulouse has quite a lot of these hotel particuliers.

20. Convent of the Jacobins. That's an odd building this one. Tower is very Toulouse, exterior is very north German and the interior is very Moorish. Beautiful.

21. A beautiful tall tower.

22. Close up.

23. More close up.

24. The cloisters are stunning too. Especially in this warm Spring sunshine.

25. The interior.

26. The light inside was incredible!

27.

to be continued...

Fabulous photos. Toulouse has long been on my list. Hopefully one day I'll get around to visiting.

Well, you promised it and you delivered. Absolutely breathtaking. The city is now really high on my list of places to visit urgently.
I'm waiting for more.

Same with us. We 'visited' it back in December 2017. But it was against our will. We went for a weekend trip to nearby Carcassonne...unfortunately our return flight was cancelled due to snow in London. So...we had to quickly book a flight back from Toulouse and make a mad 1:45 hour dash there! We made it, just about....

Yeah those interiors were stunning! It's also quite good that nobody discovered this place so it was largely empty!

Thanks! Yeah, Toulouse is probably our favourite French city. We been to Bordeaux last year and while it was a handsome city too, Toulouse left a better impression. Maybe because of the weather or maybe because of the architecture. Anyway everywhere outside Paris is good.

So here's some more of Toulouse!

28. And this is the Garonne. Perhaps not one of the more impressive urban riversides in France but very pleasant nonetheless.

29. Some sort of bird meeting?

30. Another hotel particulier. The massive and gorgeous Hôtel d'Assézat!

31. Rue de Metz the central street of the city. The rest of the urban space is barely fit for cars. So most people either walk or cycle. We did the same. We rented bikes and off we went!

32. You just gotta love these beautiful streets!

33.

34.

35.

Very beautiful series of a surprisingly unknown city, despite its size and relevance.

Thanks for sharing your high quality photography and commentary. I really enjoy getting to know a city through someone else's experience.

Thanks a lot! Glad you like it!

Yeah, Toulouse is home to Airbus and Aerospace Valley! In other words it is pretty serious stuff! Yet few people pass this way. It is for the better, I suppose! After all there's nothing worse than stag parties and instagram queens.

These are very beautiful shots. I'll have to be honest here I didn't even know where Toulouse was and wasn't even sure how to spell its name
Thank you for the tour and maybe I'll have to visit it someday.

Toulouse is exceptionally beautiful. Almost Italian in its atmosphere, although you'll still struggle to find food (Mcdonald's excluded) past lunchtime! I suppose that is a good thing but when you're used to restaurants staying open all day long that can pose some problems!
