nice pics hya and thanks for starting part2 drwho!

Expect more pics

I think the first 2 pics posted by hya reflect the late style of shophouses built slightly before WW2 or just after.

From me.

Those that you took have a bit of Art Deco in them.

A unique feature of shophouses is the 5-foot way, the passageway that connects the whole row on the ground level. It allows easy passage during rain or shine. In fact, this architectural style has been heavily employed throughout Singapore:

Besides redstone, you and me, I seldom or rarely see anyone posts pictures of shophouses.

Anyway, these shophoses at that street in Kampong Glam are mostly occupied by Chinese Clan Associations. Sometimes, they would put up tentage along this road at night for their events. Such activities are not popular with the younger generations... thus, we might not see many of these Clan Associations in future unless they have a few rich and influential members.

I think I have similar pictures of those shophouses too. Very decorative.

btw, some information from URA website.

KAMPONG GLAM CONSERVATION AREA
Bounded by Ophir Road, Victoria Street, Jalan Sultan and Beach Road, the area was given conservation status on 7 July 1989. Traditionally a Malay residential area with ethnic-based activities, it contains mainly two-storey shophouses of the Early and Transitional Shophouse Styles.

are those the shophouses near Serene Centre?

Theyre quite nice and actually its quite interesting that Bukit Timah has shophouses as most are traditionally located near the city centre.

@drwho, you are right, there are quite a few backpacker places located within shophouses, as well as budget hotels.
