Zedcorp's great pics reminded me that the London hotel site is finally under construction. Hope it's a good one; it's very prominent for new arrivals.

A great way to explore the Hoddle Grid... pick up a couple of mini maps from tourist information then wander... these are the “Street Art” and “Arcades and Lanes” maps. To be honest both still just scratch the surface as there’s just so much more... then enjoy a happy hour whiskey to wind down a Friday waiting for the other half

Happy Valentines Day everybody and have a fantastic weekend!

At Tullamarine:

Artificial wave pools will revolutionise surfing
FEBRUARY 14, 2020 Tim Elliott

The arrival of the perfect wave – in an artificial lagoon, for a fee – has the potential to revolutionise the sport. But it’s also the antithesis of what surfing has, for many, always been about.

Your bottom 5 LEAST FAVOURITE towers.

Let's hear em...

Favourites -

1. Eureka - Always will be my favourite tower. Iconic, ever-shifting, and unlike anything else on earth.
2. 101 Collins St....my what a beautiful construction. A gem of a tower.
3. ANZ World Headquarters. Beautiful and charming gothic post moden, and looks heaps more immense than it actually is.
4. 333 Collins - Gorgeous, this is a post-modern tower done absolutely right.
5. Melbourne Central Tower - Used to be my favourite and a childhood obsession. It looked so unbelievably huge and tall somehow when it was standing out by itself. But now, after being surrounded by taller neighbours, it's totally been brought down to size and i consider it just a beautiful tower.

Honorable mentions:
500 Bourke. The immenseness of this tower, totally awe inspiring in its structure and framing.
Victoria One also turned out very well and unique for this city.
I also used to be obsessed with Freshwater Place North and I still think it's a very smartly considered design and perfect for the area...
All the Upper West Side towers really seem to appeal to me too

Least favourites -
1. Adobe 318 - Look, the wave is very cool, but the sides of this tower anger me beyond the point of being able to appreciate the rest of it. Painted brown concrete vertical strips with those awful singular window columns. I used to see this building all the time and I just started to despise it for it's missed opportunity. Also, terrible street frontage.
2. It's not even done yet but I already know I'm going to hate Melbourne Grand. Ugh
3. The Oaks building? You probably know the one I mean. What the hell is going on here?
4. Collins House - that wall of sorrow...
5. Optus House - Yeah not much to be said about it. It's blank wall facing the river is particularly offensive. But, I respect it for once being Melbourne's tallest.

Dishonorable mentions:
Verve 501 certainly looks like trash now. I remember it seeming insanely tall as a kid, but now it's dated in all the wrong ways. Not the worst thing ever though. It's kinda cute in a way.

There's also a building behind the Eureka, about 120m tall on City Road. The eastern side is honestly pretty good, with gold frames and an interesting stacked design. But the western side is painted in the most horrific black and white pattern I've ever seen. You guys might know which one I'm talking about. I hate concrete walls but this is far, far worse.

That one opposite Eureka is Opus. It's west wall is a reference, I think, to a piano keyboard, in line with its musical name and proximity to the Arts Centre. Not as effective as the pattern on the Greek centre, at Lonsdale and Russell, but it will lose some of its prominence when the Focus tower gets up.

Okay I'm game
Favourites
1. the original BHP building corner Bourke and William - love the simplicity and the street level minimal 60s elegance
2. 333 Collins - strong street level presence and quality and the incorporation of the banking chamber dome
3. Victoria One - unlike many others at that end of town this will stand the test of time
4. Marina Tower at New Quay for what it adds to the skyline with its non rectangular geometry
5. Collins Place - while both towers could do with a good scrub they still have an amazing presence - I especially like the slim 55 Collins Tower

Least Favourite
1. Avant - hideous and that pink... yech
2. Collins House - that cement wall.
3. Vision - that awful south wall and the northern white wave that will never be built out
4. Abode318 - for the same reasons as Wibbly Wobbly
5. Collins Arch (now ducks for cover) There's odd looking stuff going on at the top that looks cheap like cement sheeting and destroys whatever other merit it might have.

Melbourne Hall of Fame
Rialto and 120 Collins - above all others in life membership of importance
Aurora for bringing real height to that end of town (though I despise the podium)

Possible Nominees for favourites
Queens Place - loving all about this but want both towers
435 Bourke - for what it will bring to the gap in the skyline
Ritz Carlton tower for its boldness - though I detest the podium
380Lonsdale - that glass is astonishing

Possible Nominees for Least Favourite
That CE thing Melbourne Grand
Premier Tower - I can't forgive the podium nor the non curved glass nor the stripes - it doesn't meet the cut for real quality
The Peak. Nothing else need be said.

Top 10 Skyscrapers

1. 140 William Street
My favourite since I was young, best BHP headquarters so far.
Simple and elegant, Modernism at its best!

2. Manchester Unity Building
Art-deco/moderne/neo-gothic, call its style what you like, it just looks great!
Anchors the corner location almost perfectly, just wish it was taller.

3. Republic Building
Katsalidis at his idiosyncratic best!
Looks like an armored samurai from a distance.

4. Melbourne Central
A Kurogawa modernist beauty, he got this skyscraper right, but the Latrobe Street side of the complex lets it down.
Would have rated higher if the Latrobe Street side was better designed.

5. Eureka
Fender Katsalidis designed engineering marvel!
One of its kind, reflecting Melbourne history in its make-up.

6. 101 Collins Street
Post-modernism at its best!
A DCM masterpiece.

7. Victoria 1
Tall, slender and elegant with a great podium.
Just looks great.

8. Aurora
The skyscraper looks great, but the podium lets it down a bit.
If the podium just looked better, this would have rated higher!

9. Prima-Pearl
I just like this building!

10. 333 Collins Street
Great incorporation of a heritage interior and with a quality finish!

Yes Mr C.

I have toyed with the idea, but not got around to it yet..... Yuncken Freeman / SOM / Rahman Khan (as Engineer was equally responsible for the outcome) @BHP house and FK with Republic Tower - a hard call to separate in my book.... Both up there at number one!

I’ll have to think further about the also-ran list.

Favourite:

1. 120 Collins Street - just an all-time elegant classic. I love the patterns and combination of colours (grey, silver, purple) and how it loosely resembles the Empire State Building.

2. Melbourne Central - a really funky design, yet elegant in its simplicity.

3. 568 Collins Street - I love its slenderness and simplicity. It helps gives that end of the city a real NYC feel and the black glass makes it stand out on the skyline for the better.

4. 35 Spring Street - incredibly high quality finishes and really makes a positive contribution to the east end of the CBD.

5. Premier Tower - this one speaks for itself. The design is just mind blowing and will be a tremendous talking point and tourist attraction upon completion.

Least favourite:

1. Neo200 - bland, boring and a total waste of a prime site.

2. 620 Collins Street - same as no. 1; also terrible relationship with the street being built right to the boundary.

3. Upper West Side complex - the design does nothing for me and, again, a total waste of a prime site. Just imagine what could have been built there today...

4. 535 Bourke - looks like it has passed its use-by date and is ripe for redevelopment.

5. ZEN - the design is lazy and the building looks just weird.

I won't bump the threads, but the ever-cautious Holder East group has splashed out on a couple of billboards near Vic Market.
