my first impression is its a dissapointment, when compared to the original ac renders alll that time ago its a let down, however, if that had 've been anounced as any other new tower, we'd have been over the moon. i dont think its as boxy as it look there, and id say its at least 150m, now imagine the drive down there with ac, alpha, orion, hct all with in a short space of each other!!

Do not forget BST, a 150m tower that will be 100m down the road on Broad Street.

Think of the view coming down the Hagley Road towards Five Ways. Large buildings before the junction, look ahead you have BST, with Alpha, Hyatt and AC right in front of you, and SHT peaking up behind them. Look to your right(ish) you get the Sentinels and HCT.

Places such as Manchester do not have such a welcoming like Five Ways, an it is about to get better. I always get a buzz coming to Birmingham that route.

It's the concept and function.

It's innovative and the UI make it win hands down.

i know it doesnt seem like it will be built to the 175m max, however, alpha tower is pretty imposing, and this will be 40 or more metres taller and just as wide

here is my (rubbish) attempt at giving a better idea of the height in relation to alpha tower

it will be massive (not 175m ok) but still massive

OK guys, here's my two'pen'eth (I am surprised Woody hasn't been on yet...).

I am disappointed with it, but not terribly. We all had our hearts set on the HOK designs, which was amazing looking but now seems a little dated (well, it is a 90's building!). However, as I recall the HOK design was an office block wasn't it?

But a few redeeming features:

I count 50 floors (if the 2 lowest double-height floors count as 2 each). That makes 160.26m, but looking at it I would say closer to 175m when compared with Alpha (it sits on lower ground).

The 'local inspiration' seems to be drawn from Alpha (the buttresses on the front) and Hyatt.

The Alpha side has the buttress at the front, and then steps out halfway back.

There is an interesting fin feature running down the Mailbox side.

I am intrigued as to what's going in the square section 3/4 way up on Alpha side.

I like the shape of the roof, and the facade looks good.

Forgetting the previous designs, the whole Arena Central scheme will be amazing.

The plaza on the Mailbox side looks v cool.

I think the angle, footprint and positioning is good. It will look very slender when viewed from New St Stn but will have a real presence when heading up the Bristol Road.

But I'm not keen on the lower 2 floor shapes, ad the spire should be lost IMO.

So overall I am a little underwhelmed but I think I wil grow to love this. I hope it gets a bit of revision to create a more interesting top.

The reason for the flat(ish) top will be because of our beloved height restriction (although it is pretty certain this is now at 175m) and Miller as developers will want to maximise revenue. I spired top is literally a waste of space/money when there could be apartments there. That is why the Beethams and Eastgate are that way.

We'll see what comes out in the wash eh? But fear not - Snow Hill will be about this height

Lol no it's not...It's not every ten years either by the looks of it

Oh and Alpha tower is not imposing.....This building should be over 200.

At that angle it looks taller then 150 to me, given that it's on lower ground, and you've cut the bottom of the AC tower off the photo of Alpha Tower.

Is it worth being reminding that it's just a car park at the moment?

And nice quote DSB, dead tastful!

oh simlim shut ya cake-hole, it really is times like this that your lack of knowledge of urban designr eally shines through and your stupidly competative nature of wanting something bigger than everyone elses is as apparent as your stupidly large mouth!
