I've always thought that pub looks similar to The George in Longbridge and that should have the same treatment now as it's failing as a restaurant.

Hotel du Vin Birmingham, which is located in the Victorian Grade II listed landmark which was formerly home to the Birmingham Eye Hospital from 1884, has undergone a £1m investment to refurbish its 66 bedrooms.

The hotel is working alongside Dexter Moren Associates to give each room a modern, fresh, stylish feel. The development is due to be completed in September, with some rooms being already being unveiled from the first phases.

The full bedroom transformations boast a new classical and contemporary style.

Tom Gallimore, General Manager of Hotel du Vin Birmingham, said: “We are extremely excited for the renovation to be complete; the bedrooms already returned look great and are definitely more contemporary so it’s going to be a real change for us. I am really pleased with the plans and look forward to unveiling the new styled rooms once they are all ready to showcase. The team are all very thrilled and we all look forward to presenting the new product.”

Hotel du Vin Birmingham is now the latest of the group to have a full bedroom transformation. The hotel is home to one of the biggest beds in the city measuring in at 8ft.

The bedrooms follow in the footsteps of the hotel’s refurbishment of the meetings and events space last year and is part of a larger holistic project to restore and refresh the hotel throughout.

New boutique hotel planned for central Birmingham
By Chris Druce
Tue 17 September 2019

Plans have been submitted to convert an office building at Birmingham’s New Street into a 259-bedroom hotel.

Under the planning application, which has been submitted by landlord M&G Real Estate, retail premises would be retained on the ground floor of King Edward House.

Will Gerrish, retail development manager at M&G Real Estate, said: “The redevelopment proposals for King Edward House represent a significant investment into a unique and historic city centre building, bringing it into full public use for the first time.

“Advanced discussions are underway with a boutique hotel operator seeking its first Birmingham presence and we look forward to being able to share more details about them and their ambitions for Birmingham in due course.”

I'd love to see the retail premises on the ground floor given awnings, new street repaved and a few decent cafes or something but that's a long way off. Either way, with a decent hotel on new street the council will seriously need to upgrade the public realm.

I'm almost sure the council have said a repaving of new street is going to happen eventually? Didn't they get some funding for it from somewhere?

In an ideal world we'd see a 6 week public consultation launched tomorrow, followed by a revised version and spades in the ground as soon as the Christmas market sods off to be completed by November next year. A bloke can dream...

The whole of the retail bid (which I assume includes New Street) is being re-surfaced next year. The works are planned to start in Victoria Square January/Feb time I'm told.

Great news - will there be some kind of public consultation on them?

Do we know if any of the offices are still in use here? Sure I’ve seen people regularly using the building

Quick search seems to bring up the care quality commisssions regional head office listed here, wondering how big if we could be looking at them moving elsewhere along with any others on site

It would have been nice, but if repaving will start in January then I'm guessing there's no time for anything other than a confirmatory consultation. (i.e. we're just doing it to follow the process)

No idea. I only heard about it because BCC have set an embargo on anything else happening on Vic Square from next Spring due to the start of their own resurfacing works. What they entails I don't know but I'm told it extends to the whole retail bid and I assume will be completed in time for the CWG.

As always, I reserve judgement until I see spades in the ground!
