More info about the station: The station was built in the late 19th century with the purpose of being the headquarters of the newly-founded So Paulo Railway. In the first decades of the 20th century, it was the main entrance to the city, a fact that gave it a major economic relevance, because the majority of the coffee from Santos was delivered in the station, along with the imported supplies.

The current building was finished in 1901 and was inspired on the Flinders Street Station, in Melbourne, after being chosen in a British catalog. The materials for its construction were brought from UK. The station was designed and produced by Walter Macfarlane & Co. Saracen Foundry Glasgow. The station was assembled in GLasgow, then dissassembled and sent to So Paulo where it was reassembled. The building was designed by the English architect Henry Driver.

Another thing, the "forest" that you can see in one of the pictures is, in fact, a park.

Sorry for writting in English (trying to write in Italian would take much more time for me...:-)) Actually, this station is not so important to the railway system of the city anymore...however, historically is considered the central station...also, Sao Paulo has more than 350km of rail system (to be expended to more than 500km until 2014)...nevertheless, one can say that rail systems in Brazil are kind of sub-used...proportionally we have much more roads than railways (and therefore could be argued that buses and buses terminals are more important)

Ok, we have understood. I imaged tha rail systems in Brazil are subused and you prefer to move by car than by railways. Maybe WC 2014 will be the occasion to have a development for railways, like you told us, passing from 350 to 500 km like urban rail.

Seeing on google earth I was hiy by the bigness of Sao Paulo.

Could also tell us how Brazil is moving for urban transport thinking to 2014?
