How expensive is it to build structures that can withstand earthquakes like they do in Tokyo?

There are definitely many more cities which are more prone to earthquakes than Nairobi yet they have even much taller buildings, I've only heard of earth tremours or minor quakes, as yet in Nairobi!! And if they building sponors mean to they can definitely take that into consideration is design and construction stages.

All depends on the size, degree of reinforcement and technology used. A good engineer however could design a strong building that could withstand earthquakes quite cheaply if they utilize the available materials well.

Most people who live in Nairobi don't even know what an earthquake is. There was a time in 2007 Nairobi experienced a slight tremor, people literally thought it was the end of the world, rogue pastors made a killing from a scared congregation, worship places were overflowing and all manner of prophecies were made. Some people even sold all they had and spent every penny of it because 'it was the end of the world anyway'.

we got one last week but it was so mild calling it an earthquake is a misnomer.

When news first came out on this project .... I was all ears and excited about the whole project. I was able to stumble upon this site http://www.mecoy.com/?page_id=24. This got me thinking .... might this be the long awaited building ???

Earthquake design is an intersection of probability and economy, areas like japan and L.A do get many earthquakes that are strong so the code for design calls for strong structures, in Nairobi earthquakes are few and weak whenever they come, so the code for design is not very tough. Although you can build a building to withstand Japan style earthquakes in Nairobi, it would be a waste of money.

Its not a waste of money. Some parts of Nairobi were built over land that was once swamp or marshland including the CBD. That alone can magnify the effect of an earthquake. The best example being the mexico city quake in the 80s. The great rift valley is also too close for comfort.

@shocks the building does not match the render of the One skyscrapper which is a 60flr single structure the one posted above doesn't look close to that structure. But I do know that Hilton hotel plans to move to the upper hill area with plans to construct a 35 to 40flr building tht I think will change the area

The render has around 23 floors, not 60.
