Groundbreaking held
for Garden City Mall in
Nairobi
July 25, 2013
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on
Wednesday for the Garden City Shopping Mall
in Nairobi, setting stage for the opening of the
mall by November 2014.
The US$250 million project, which is touted as
East Africa’s the largest shopping mall, is being
developed by London-based private equity firm
Actis.
The 32-acre development, whose construction
will be led by Nairobi-based Mentor
Management, will consist of a 50,000 square
metres shopping mall, 500 housing units and a
4-acre central park with an outdoor house
arena for staging events.
Garden City will be home to about 120 local and
international retail brands, many of them
opening their outlets in Kenya for the first
time.
According to Actis Head of East Africa Michael
Turner, Garden City provides a rare
opportunity to make a world-class development
directly serving the needs of Kenyan businesses,
shoppers and home-owners.
“We have been encouraged by the strong
demand shown by both local and international
retailers, who like us see Garden City as a
landmark destination in Nairobi and the East
African region,” Mr Turner said.
“Garden City sets the standards for other mega
property developers, and I know there are
many waiting, to follow,” said Nairobi governor
Evans Kidero during the ceremony.

Actis has a good track record in retail
development in East and West Africa having
built ten multi-billion shopping malls in seven
African countries since 2004, including The
Junction shopping mall in Nairobi.
Garden City becomes the latest real estate
development along the new Nairobi-Thika
highway. Other notable firms that have eyed
investments along the highway include
European furniture chain IKEA, Nakumatt and
Uchumi supermarkets as well as PepsiCo which
is putting up a Sh2.4 billion bottling plant.
The busy highway has also attracted residential
property developments including the Sh2.5
billion Tatu City, Thika Greens , Migaa Golf
Estate , among several others.
The Garden City project was recently granted
the Vision 2030 Private Sector partnership

The Contractor is serious

I passed there by yesterday and I can tell you that a lot is happening around the site following the completion of preceding activity of 'moving the earth' or simply levelling.

Most of this landmark mall's foundation is to be realized by piling and a piling contractor was contracted solely for this job. Guess what, the main contractor is Sinohydro corporation (don't know whether some previous posts had mentioned that). As per now, the site is abuzz with activities as people and machine move from one corner to the other all day long and even on Sundays. I could see a gang of people working on bar bending, another setting up the columns while others were concreting the numerous concrete columns and a slab. Another gang of workers was setting up a brand new crane at one corner. Most of the workers live and work there as there is a contractor's camp that has been set up in one corner of the site.

Most likely, we will have a number of stationary cranes at site because of the large surface area of the building. The cranes were already on site, though as parts awaiting assembly.
At that speed, by December, much of the mall's structural skeleton will be up and cladding shall have started at lower stories.

I took these images with a low resolution phone camera, so bear with the situation.

Fact that this is the future site of largest mall in EA makes this a very exciting project. Hopefully it will get more than just a few people off the city.

On the other hand, its means even more congestion for Thika Rd.

The developer does not have time for non-sense.
