The Barometer: Building projects around Africa & the world that Nairobi can borrow a leaf from

The Barometer:Projects around Africa, The World That Nairobi Can borrow a Leaf From

This thread is an opportunity for us to compare and contrast projects(buildings) around Africa and world and what we already have or currently under construction in Nairobi.

There's a lot we can learn from what's going on elsewhere.

N:B This specific thread is not about roads or any other transport infrastructure, for that you can post here

The Barometer:Transport and Infrastructure projects around Africa and The World That Nairobi Can borrow a Leaf From.

In Nairobi, most buldings are made by using a lot of heavy concrete..look at CBD towers..we must appreciate using reinforced steel..like sifa tower (although at a lower scale). The foundation of hass towers is deep enough to support even a 400m tall structure. Asian countries incurr more cost because of their earthquake prone zones yet go for sky's.

Ghana Has Just Opened University of Ghana Teaching Hospital

I know we have nice private hospitals in Nairobi but I wish the public ones would borrow a leaf from this.

The High Rises Coming Up In Upper Hill are World Class

But the low rises could do with a little inspiration from Sandton, SA

Discovery Place

The Kenyatta university one should have gone that direction from start. But it looks so old type, given all the money and time of day we are in today.

Wow! That hospital is super. Even Nairobi Hospital's new buildings don't look that good.

I wonder what benchmarks people learn when they travel out for that purpose and go back and build rabbit hole looking kind of buildings for public facilities when what they see out here are such wonderful architecture executed with grace and precision. I have seen very nice hospitals out here and I would never allow people I work with to build bad ones at home if I was there. I would show them pictures and ask them to get local architects willing to travel to learn from peers outside and even ask for publicly available plans and then demand that they build similar ones. I think I may know some people involved in the Ghanaian hospital above. If my suspicion is true then I know that they used what they saw. And I love that. I a also know the KU VC was visiting around medical centers in the US, so why did they not use the plans they saw. May be they already had plans then approved but it would have been better that way. Wafungue macho jamani. We use so much money to build any of these things anyway so why not go for top quality stuff.

I hear 3% of all taxes are channeled towards health care in Ghana. These are the results.

One thing I have learned about the government in Kenya this last one month. They do not give a flip about public health care. Too bad some things cannot be wrapped up in a blue ribbon for Kamwana to cut.

Kenya allocates more, around 8% but now we all know where it goes. I bet there is no Estama ltd supplying containers in Ghana.

We are so useless. I cant even imagine we can ever have such a hospital in Kenya.

Thought the 8% was percentage of GDP.

Of taxes. Last year allocation was about 65B. Taxes collected were between 800 & 900B

I don't think tax was 900b. I think it was around 1700b coz we couldn't have had a budget of about 2.1tr and collect taxes of 900b

It was just short of Kshs 1 trillion. The rest was from debt including money borrowed from China for the SGR among other projects.I think they crossed the Kshs 1 trillion revenue collection recently if not the collection they will have this year.I think more can still be done with the revenue collected and not depend on debt so heavily although not all that is budgeted for is implemented.Absorption rate of development budget is usually around 45%.Some ministries return money to the exchequer.I do not get though the obsession with the aesthetics of the hospitals.Better equipped and better services in hospitals is what is needed

Both of you are wrong and you can't use "tax" and also use "revenue" interchangeably .Yes ,KRA collected about Sh1tr in taxes but both of you failed to account for various charges and fees (which are not counted as taxes) that also brings in several hundred billion Shs.Then add a few Grants and budget support from donor nations even before you factor in debt.

The design is very impressive, the resources allocated for stocking the hospital, even more impressive.
