Inefekt in Japan - 2017

I headed back to Japan again for the 4th time, it's been four years already since my last trip. This was my first time in Japan outside of summer, flying out in early May and staying for less than two weeks, which is my shortest trip yet.

This was essentially a photography trip for me, I have a Tumblr blog which I update quite regularly (and which I have gained a fairly large follower base) and I was running out of content Oh and also my boss told me to take some leave......you don't need to twist my arm too much to go back

So, I left on May 8 and arrived about 4pm that same day. There are no direct flights to Japan from Perth, Australia so I flew via Singapore. My first stop, as always, was Tokyo. My aim for the trip was to visit places I had never been to before, including different areas/regions of cities I have visited in the past. For Tokyo that meant areas such as Jinbocho, Nakano, Saitama and even parts of Shinjuku I had never seen such as Golden Gai.
While in Tokyo I made a day trip to Lake Ashi and spent a little bit of time in Odawara. After five nights at the Shinjuku Sunroute Plaza Hotel I headed to Matsumoto, Narai, Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go, Kyoto, Takashima, Osaka, Nachi Falls and then back to Tokyo for another couple of nights before flying back home on the 20th.

Unlike my previous threads, I'm not going to post every single damn photo I took I'll be posting only a selection. Also, as most of the photos are destined for my Tumblr blog they are processed in a way to appeal to that audience. It's a more cinematic style of photography I guess.

As mentioned, I arrived in Japan (Haneda) around 4pm but didn't get into my hotel room and settled in until around 6pm and immediately hit the streets with my new Nikon d5500 camera in hand. As I hadn't been back in Japan for a while I thought I'd just take a stroll around the familiar streets of Shinjuku to reacquaint myself with the area, so these first bunch of photos are all going to be of familiar places before heading into some shots around Golden Gai to round off my first night.

Onto the photos.........

Even though I was technically outside of Hanami season, Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane) still had some fake sakura branches hanging from the pipes, which was nice to see.....

Thanks Seph
There are so many places to explore in even the most popular places like Shinjuku & Shibuya that you could go there ten times and see parts you never knew existed each time you visit. Before my trip I thought that if 70% of the places I see are places I have never been to previously then I will be doing well......it ended up being closer to 90% so I was happy about that!

Like Omoide Yokocho, and most of the alley areas in Tokyo for that matter, most of the izakaya only seat 6 to 8 people......

You wouldn't want to be too drunk coming down from this place!

There are little narrow alleys all over the place, you could spend an entire night getting lost here

A lot of the establishments were 'members only'. Not this one though, I think the sign says 'good luck' so maybe it's an illegal gambling place

Nah, Golden Gai is so small-scale and under renewed threats from gentrification and redevelopment, it's watched like a hawk. It even has a bloody directory. Besides, a Yakuza business would be more subtle.

I suppose it would

The area should be heritage listed........if such legislation exists in Japan?

Well it does, but post-war shophouses altered over the years don't really fit the criteria for Important Cultural Property listings.

Jinbocho 神保町

Jinbocho is a neighbourhood in Chiyoda known for its used book stores, it is sometimes referred to as Book Town. It's close to the northern reaches of the Imperial Palace, so fairly central.
