Any reason you went to yokocho specifically in Yamanote areas? It's more of a Shitamachi thing, although that could be your reasoning.

Yes Tumblr does vertical panorama photos well but is a little lacking with the standard landscape oriented photos

I had no idea of this distinction between Yamanote & Shitamachi areas so I looked it up and it has been a bit of a learning experience. So thanks

Anyway, I visited these areas purely for photographic reasons. Most of the photos I've taken at Omoide Yokocho have been popular on my blog so I thought I'd explore some of Tokyo's other yokocho (I actually came across this website which is where I got all of my ideas from in terms of which ones I would visit).

Lake Ashi 芦ノ湖

Properly known as Lake Ashinoko, this is the lake most well known for its views of Mt Fuji. This was the first day of my JR Pass and it was one of a few options I had for this particular day, my last in Shinjuku. It was always planned as a 'weather permitting' trip and despite the overcast and hazy conditions in Tokyo I decided to go anyway. Thankfully the skies were much clearer in Hakone but Fuji was still being her usual shy self, only revealing herself for a half hour or so before hiding behind the clouds again

But firstly, to get to Lake Ashi I had to take the shinkansen to Odawara Station, then hop on a local bus to the lake area in Hakone. I wasn't sure whether the pass covered the trip but for some reason the bus driver on the way there didn't charge me for the ride but the driver on the way back did, only after ringing his station to find out if it was covered first. I'm sure they were the same bus company. Anyway, a couple of shots of my shinkansen ride to Odawara before moving onto the Lake Ashi stuff.....

There were quite a few locals fishing the lake, not sure what fish are in there though, probably trout or something like that

I was skyping with a friend while sitting on a bench and saw these cherry blossoms. I wasn't expecting to see them at all as it was out of season but these are actually 'double cherry blossoms' or yaezakura which are late blooming cherry blossoms. I only wish I had seen them when Fuji was visible....

Apparently they are not very well known to tourists but there are a few places even in Tokyo where you can see them if you miss out on the more common cherry blossoms (somei yoshino 染井吉野). In Tokyo you can see them at the Imperial Palace East Gardens, Shinjuku Gyoen, Asukayama Park, Hamarikyu Gardens, Ueno Park and a few other locations (Google is your friend). So don't despair if you go to Japan for hanami but just miss the season as you will still see some yaezakura .

I didn't tackle this staircase to the actual shrine, my knees were playing up at this stage (old sports related knee injury) and I was living on tylenol to relieve the pain
