Official West Midlands Region Development Thread 2!

So, nearly thirteen years after the first one started, welcome to your new Official West Midlands Development thread except this one is being merged with the Wolverhampton and Black Country Development Thread.

This thread should cover development news and issues in the Black Country and four of the five shires of the West Midlands Region - Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, and Worcestershire - plus the City of Stoke-on-Trent and the large New Town of Telford.

Happy Postings folks.

For the first and only Official West Midlands Development thread, click here www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1807151

Wolverhampton Development Summary

Not much is on site (apparently £1bn is on site at the minute, so when you look at what isn't, there's a lot in planning).

Not saying this is fully comprehensive and I've probably missed a lot.

Under Construction
Planned
More Looseley Planned
  • Southside regeneration
  • 8,000 homes along the Willenhall Road corridor
  • Park Village parks redevelopment as housing
  • UTC factory consolidation and extension (currently two factories)
Recently Completed
Transport Under Construction
Transport (Some looseley) Planned
Towers
  • Brewer's Yard tower: 30fl
  • Commercial District tower: unknown height, but it's big (need a thread for the commercial district)
  • Construction House residential conversion: 13fl
  • Planned waste incinerator will be the tallest structure if built
  • Planned wind turbine at UTC will be taller, if built, but think this has been defeated
Pipedreams
  • Possibillity of a new Tettenhall station between Wolverhampton and Bilbrook
  • Wulfrun Shopping Centre regeneration supposedly next on the list
  • Regeneration of Kwik Fit / coach station / the Maltings / Carvers as residential
  • Blakenhall regeneration is planned in the distant future
  • Redevelopment of Oxley is supported

An article in the Birmingham Post about the potential redevelopment or revamp of Walsall Town Centre with some images of what the future could hold.

Eye Infirmary has been bought for an undisclosed sum, but it's not looking good for the buildings.

https://www.expressandstar.com/news/...eded-revealed/

This is a prime, listed site in Chapel Ash that takes up a huge amount of space. But the buildings, though nice in their day, are now crumbling apart.

It's quite unbelievable how quickly buildings can fall into disrepair to such a degree. I know fires and things really don't help.

I used the eye infirmary a couple of times, pretty much immediately prior to it closing for good. It really was not that long ago in the grand scheme of things, and the buildings looked in pretty good nick then.

What a shame, genuinely.

Good news everybody!

The Green Room, a theatre being built next to The Grand, is only temporary.

Quote:
The new theatre will be inserted between the flank walls of the Grand Theatre and the listed Grand Post House (1895), the city’s former post office and sorting centre, to create a new semi-outdoor arts space in the city centre. The project is intended to open up and greatly expand the Grand Theatre’s versatility and artistic programme to reach new audiences, and is the first phase of the creation of a permanent arts hub on the same site.

Williams’ phased masterplan for the site will eventually deliver a major new multi-level permanent cultural building linked to the Grand, which will greatly expand and enhance the nature of the city’s performing arts programme as a key element of the city centre’s Arts Hub regeneration masterplan.

So the long term plan is for a taller building better fitting the streetscape.

Wolverhampton. Wonder if it's Westside or the Interchange? Or i54?

News on Willenhall Rd regeneration. I’m not too sure how the road becoming a one way system will work -presumably other roads would need to become one way in the opposite direction?

Walsall Street will be the inbound lanes and Willenhall Road the outbound.

My plan from the fantasy thread, basically
