Retail Roundup!!!!!!!!

Good news, bad news and speculation.

The good:

- MATALAN is open. Must say, the MC is looking much better these days. We'll brush aside Debenhams "closing". I doubt they will, and even if they do, they'll be quickly replaced like-for-like.

- 02 getting a refit on Dudley Street. Means one less store closing down there.

- Coventry Building Society getting a refit in the Wulfrun Centre

- Work has started on the new Metro Bank (takes in three units on Dudley Street).

- New Vodaphone open on Dudley Street

- eBay store opened, but it's only there for a month (i10)

- As previously said, Wetherspoons has started

Bad news:

- Footlocker appears to be closing on Dudley Street. No signs in the windows, but above is a sign saying retail unit to let. Speculation: as nothing says it's closing, could they be moving into the Mander Centre?

- MATALAN is tiny. Very cramped in there. A nice looking store, but nothing like the one in Bilston. It's so tight. They've also closed their Queen Square entrance, which was a big feature of the New Look store when built. If they're not gonna use it, the MC should build a corner unit here. It's not a bad shop, but could be better (and BIGGER).

- Pat Val still empty; so is EE.

- Still no new sign for Top Shop. Looking scruffy as hell.

- No closing down signs on Wilko, so we'll have to wait a while for that and B&M to open I think

- SELECT in administration (no sign of closure yet)

Planning application has been submitted to change the former Hughes Electrical store on St Johns Retail Park into a Wren Kitchens showroom.

Could. [I]The site is in two ownerships though and each has plans for a housing estate. I think construction on the right hand side may have already started. Believe this was the former power station.

Right hand side 164 homes:

Left hand side 151 homes.

BBC Radio 4 programme 9pm Tues 21st May
Just listening to an interesting programme describing Manchester's high rises with pros and cons suggesting that developers have gone too far and that they see a problem in the future because of current overbuilding without a council lan. The programme is called 'Manhatten-chester'! It suggests that the money has come from special grants within 'The Northern Powerhouse' scheme. Vast majority buying apartments are students and the working community - keeping travel costs down.

I've been told by a friend of a friend who works for Odeon that the cinema in the Westside development is going to be an Odeon Luxe and is due to open in 2020.

Welcome to the forum SKubrick. Potentially a very exciting time to be in Wolverhampton.

that's one of the halves I mentioned earlier. So that site will be out of the equation.

Next week, it's more than likely I will ask Jan to create a separate Coventry forum that will include any proposals, new or old, current U/C sites and the Official Coventry and Warwickshire Development Thread 9 and the older development threads too. May even include the Completed proposals.

I want people on here to think about whether they want the same for Wolverhampton and the West Midlands. It appears to me that the Wolverhampton threads tend to get lost in with the Birmingham proposals and the same for U/C sites. Maybe it would bring a big viewing audience to the Wolverhampton proposals if they are separate from Birmingham's.

Give it some thought and it'd be good to hear what people think at this stage.

A separate Wolvo forum would be great, but we don't have an awful lot under construction, just a lot of proposals.

It would be Wolverhampton and the wider west midlands region except for Warwickshire. You'd also have Cannock and Telford and so on. To be fair, Coventry doesn't have a lot of proposals but does have a lot under construction.

I feel like the expansion of Shifnal is more sensible - it's just small sites all around the town rather than one big site disconnected - but it's still quite substantial.
