THRIVENT BLOCKS (6th & Portland)

Well it looks like the Hennepin County is buying the current HQ, so that means Thrivent will be building their new HQ across the street from their current location. Since I don't know what the official address

Our only hope if it's bad is that the city says No like it did for Kraus Anderson.

I'm guessing it'll be something similar to the new Xcel Nicollet office. Not great, not bad. Just would hope that they play it smart with parking. I don't know if Thrivent wants to play the developer game and do what Kraus did with their block, but that would certainly be something to hope for.

Thrivent has (or at least had) a reputation for hiring decent architects. Perkins+Will designed their now-demolished mid-century HQ, and SOM designed their current HQ.

Their operations center in Appleton, WI is pretty cool too. I'm almost certain it was designed by John Carl Warnecke.

If it looks like the Xcel Nicollet Office, I will probably throw a party. That is a completely fine (if not a bit underrated) building.

I think it'll be tasteful office building. no eyesore. faint praise but our recent track record isn't great downtown. I didn't know SOM did their present cash register looking offices. I'd love to have them sign on a big name firm for this. give jean nouvel a call (one can dream)

they could've up and left and consolidated in Appleton. that was the fear a few years ago. they're remaining downtown and redeveloping a surface parking lot.

If I'm remembering correctly , wasn't John Carl Warnecke the architect who designed the Hennepin County Government Center?

Yes, he did. Warnecke's firm also gave birth to Kohn, Pederson & Fox (KPF).

Maybe I'm in the minority here, and I don't want to offend anyone, but I think the Xcel headquarters building sucks. It's bland, uninspiring and lame. That's the mediocrity we've had to accept around here compared to some of the terrific buildings we have. The only thing I do like about it, is the fact that it's downtown.

I agree. Especially since their original HQ across the street was designed by Pietro Belluschi, an AIA Gold Medal winner. Back then, that was like winning the Pritzker Prize in Architecture.

Too bad Xcel doesn't have the design savvy it did back when it was still Northern States Power Company.

The Xcel expansion is definitely not in the same league as the original HQ, but I think its decent. I actually like the salmon red precast and the building has a warm and friendly presence, particularly in the winter. The building's corner at Nicollet and 4th is nicely articulated and plays off the Library well:

It would have fit in really good with the 80's makeover of Nicollet Mall. Many of the same colors.

Here is the packet for the half block across the street.

Astounding in its lack of vision.

Breathtaking in its lack of design.

Mind-boggling in its cowardice.

Brilliant in its mediocrity.

In the packet is a letter from DMNA rescinding their support, citing height and construction method. They point to the KA redevelopment project as an example of what should be done here instead.

Elliot Park supports the plans but has reservations about the low height as well.
