Any plans to “refurbish” the neighbourhood in the background?

I sure do hope so. Not sure if there's any concrete plan though, an evacuation of the area may or may not be included in the social housing scheme.

I think it should be completed knocked down and restyled in smaller houses. The style initially planned for maspero would looked fabulous there

I think it should be knocked down with nothing to replace it.
Absolute disgrace that we even allowed construction this close to the Pyramids. At this rate, they'll become part of downtown Giza.

And for the 10000000000000000000000th, I'll repeat myself by asking why did we build housing next to the Giza Plateau instead of Hotels and restaurants?

The Pyramids are so undervalued in Egypt's tourist vison. We built cities like Sharm to attract upper-class tourists instead of focusing on what 99% of visitors want to see. The fu€king admission fees are too low, even the tourist ones. Arguably the greatest man-made structures in human history and we allow people to build illegal shanty towns right next to them or put up multi-million dollar compounds.

I'm confident that Orscam, having taken control of tourism in Giza Plateau, will get rid of beggars and clean up the place but unless the shanty towns along the Pyramids are bulldozed, the Pyramids will remain in their current state.

"Allow" isn't exactly the right term to use. I'm not sure if these structures are legal or not but if they are, they're most likely the result of administrative officials being bribed to issue construction permits for land that wasn't designated for construction. This is, unfortunately, far too common in Egypt.

GIZA | The Grand Egyptian Museum | The World's Largest Archeological Museum | $600mn | 2018 | U/C

Were there any buildings in the area where the GEM is being built? If yes, minymina’s point of knocking them down and building tourist services would be a very logical move as long as they are built with some artistic sense and they don’t detract from the jaw dropping view of the Pyramids. Again, Foster’s project would look lush there

This is going to be a beautiful museum. I can't wait for it to open. I'll make my tour around Egypt then and definitely visit GEM. When is the opening date? Are there any delays? Wikipedia says it should open this year.
And a second question: what is going to happen to the old museum building?

The opening date has been delayed a few times. So much so, we no longer trusted any date they released. However, the government has prioritized the project and are preparing a very large extravagant opening ceremony so I would guess this time around there won't be any more delays and it'll finally open.

In regards to the old museum, it will still be around. It's just too small to hold everything, hence why they built this new one.
