Tourism along Solway Coast in CUMBRIA, in line for a major boost

From the News & Star, 31st October 2016.

Tourism along the Solway coast could be in for a major boost, with Silloth clearing the first hurdle in its bid to land £1.8m of funding.

A group of the area's leaders formed a team earlier this year hoping to tap into the Government's Coastal Communities Fund (CCF).

They've just found out their bid has made it past stage one - and now have an opportunity to tweak their case ready for the second stage.

A separate bid from Maryport did not make it through stage one, as did two efforts from communities in Copeland.

The CCF encourages the economic development of UK coastal communities by giving funding to create growth and jobs

If successful the Silloth bid team will look to transform tourism in the area and one of the ways they hope to achieve that is extending the coastal cycle route.

I guess this story fits in with this topic, long distance walks being rather popular.

Natural England has issued an update on the planned England Coast Path in the north-west. I was not aware that there was such a thing as the England Coast Path, but I am now and I approve, having recently resurrected my walking legs!

Details, including a map, can be found at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/england-coast-path-in-the-north-west-of-england

The table gives links to much more detail on each section, including developments to date.

I am a little confused about some of the progress details. For example, on the update map the Whitehaven to Silecroft section is listed as "Approved but not yet open". In the status table below the map it is listed as "Open" , but on the next line it is stated that it is "not yet available for public use - work to establish the route is currently taking place". I would take this to mean it is not open, so what does it all mean?

From looking in more detail at this stretch I would say it is definitely not "Open" as there are still several consultations about the route and access underway and one section requires a bridge over a river estuary which has not yet happened.

It is also apparent that getting the coastal path sorted is taking a long time - it would appear to have been ongoing for quite some time, the map having first been published in September 2012. I wonder if more of the path will actually open before I do have to hang up my walking gear for good.

The Whitehaven to Silecroft section mentioned in the quoted post is officially launched today, 22nd September, although it apparently opened in March 2021 with no fanfare due to the restrictions then in place.

A good stretch of coast, taking in Whitehaven, St Bee's Head and Ravenglass. I must get out there and walk the section (not all at once) as I visit that part of Cumbria rarely other than using the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway as a starting point for walks in Eskdale.

From The Whitehaven News:

"A TRAIL which takes in the stunning coast of the Lake District National Park and connects the shoreline with some of the UK’s most famous mountains and lakes will celebrate its official launch by Natural England today.

As part of the England Coast Path National Trail, the new stretch covers over almost 33 miles of trails from Whitehaven to Silecroft.

The new trail and many areas of associated coastal access land are now publicly accessible. The trail comprises of coastal terrain such as beaches, dunes and cliff tops, picturesque towns and villages, the Sellafield skyline, views of both mountain and sea and many visitor hotspots including:

• The historic Georgian town of Whitehaven
• The towering red sandstone cliffs of St Bees Head – the only area of high sea cliffs in the North West
• Majestic Muncaster Castle
• Ravenglass, the coastal village which is in two UNESCO World Heritage sites – The Lake District and Hadrian’s Wall
• Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway – one of the oldest and longest narrow gauge heritage railways in England"
