Snow falls in Cumbria - with more forecast for the county


FREEZING temperatures and gale force winds brought a flurry of snowfall to the county.

As dawn broke yesterday, motorists reported snow on the higher part of the Pennines, including areas such as Alston and Hartside.

Conditions are set to remain chilly today as voters across the county head out to cast their vote in the General Election.

Cumbrian Ben Stokes wins BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award


CUMBRIAN Cricket star Ben Stokes has landed the prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

Stokes, from Cockermouth, set the cricket world alight in a never-to-be-forgotten summer, scoring a magnificent 135 not out to help England win the Third Ashes Test by one wicket, before another unbeaten knock of 84 led his side to the one-day World Cup glory, England seeing off New Zealand in the final, after a Super Over which Stokes also took part in.

Kite festival too expensive for town


A POPULAR kite festival will no longer be held because of the high cost of running it.

Workington Town Council’s culture committee made the decision about Harrington Kite Festival due to concerns about its cost, around £10,000.

Earlier this year the first Harrington Village Green Day was held to celebrate the special status being granted to the field adjacent to the harbour.

The event was run by volunteers but it was supported by the town council and funded by Allerdale council.

Kendal Calling 2020 includes Stereophonics and Supergrass


KENDAL Calling has revealed its line-up for the 2020 festival.

The festival is in its 15th year and organisers have made sure a number of festival favourites, including some past headliners, are on the bill to make it a special anniversary.

Headline acts over the four nights include Primal Scream, Foals, Stereophonics and Supergrass.

Storm Ciara day three: Warning not to drink mains water still in place


AN URGENT from United Utilities (UU) to residents in Shap and surrounding villages warning them not to drink mains water is still in place.

The company also warned people not to use tap water for cleaning teeth, washing or cooking.

This is due to an issue with mains water in the Shap area.

Up to 400 properties are affected in Shap and villages as far east as Great Asby.

Windy Lakes protest goes down a storm


MORE than 500 people braved the driving wind and rain at Grasmere to protest against what they see as the ‘commercialisation’ of the Lake District.

The event organised by the ‘Houseboats Off Grasmere’ campaign, was originally set up to protest against an application, submitted by the Lowther Estate, to place 40-foot ‘gentleman’s yachts’ on Grasmere.

Kendal Calling 2020 – more acts including Goldfrapp named


GOLDFRAPP have been announced as the latest name for this year’s Kendal Calling festival.

Goldfrapp are electronic music duo Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory, and are celebrating 20 years as a band this year.

Their synth-pop sounds have pushed the boundaries of electronic music – with the likes of Ride A White Horse, Ooh La La and Number 1.

Bowness and Windermere dogs take top prizes at Crufts 2020

CUMBRIAN breeders were top dogs at the world famous Crufts competition.

Sandra Gibson, from Bowness, saw her multi-championship winning Pyrenean mountain dog Jody crowned Good Citizen Class at just five years old.

Sandra said: “It’s exciting. It’s great.

"It’s exactly where you want to get a first prize.

A COCKERMOUTH restaurant which was forced to close has been inundated with orders after saying it would turn surplus stock into takeaways and sell them to raise funds for the NHS and foodbank.

£3000 boost for coronavirus appeal


A HUGE £3,000 donation from the Mayor of Carlisle’s charity fund has been made to the CFM Cash for Kids coronavirus appeal.

The appeal will help Cumbrian families cope with the cost of living during such tumultuous times - it will cover essentials costs such as food and heating.

Cash for Kids is one of the Mayor’s chosen charities so she is trying to ensure this massive donation is made quickly.

West Cumbrian firefighters deliver 1,000 Easter eggs to local children

Cumbrian firefighters managed to spread some much-needed Easter cheer, despite the coronavirus lockdown.

Thanks to a generous donation from Morrisons Whitehaven to the Cleator Moor Covid-19 Group, firefighters from Whitehaven and Frizington station yesterday delivered a staggering 1,000 Easter eggs to children in the local area.

Charities receive Covid-19 funds

Charities and community groups responding to the threat of coronavirus across the county have received a financial boost from the Cumbria Covid-19 Response Fund.

Almost £62,000 from the fund, established by Cumbria Community Foundation, has been split between 17 charitable and voluntary groups.

A group of runners is undertaking a challenge in the hopes of raising thousands for a vital Cumbrian charity.

Head Torches Round the Tarn is a group of runners from the Brampton area who are hoping to run 2020 kilometres to raise £2020 for The Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association.

Kendal athlete raises £15K for NHS in 12-hour treadmill run despite two electric shocks

A RUNNER has bravely battled through some quite literally shocking setbacks to raise almost £15,000 for the health service.

Jacob Snochowski suffered an electric shock when his treadmill broke halfway through a 12-hour run he was dedicating to a Kendal hospital surgeon who operated on him when he suffered a serious groin injury.

Gareth's daily exercise raises funds for West Cumbria homeless charity

A MORESBY man is not letting lockdown stop him raising vital funds for a charity close to his heart.

Gareth McNally has set himself the challenge of running 70 miles by covering five miles a day for 14 consecutive days as his local exercise.

The operations director for Responsive NDT at Lillyhall is well on his way to raising £700 for Calderwood House homeless hostel in Egremont.

Carlisle Cathedral glowed as part of #makeitblue campaign

Carlisle Cathedral was among scores of iconic landmarks across the UK lit up in blue in the latest salute to NHS workers.

The impressive building, which forms a key part of the city's skyline, turned blue on Thursday night as part of the #makeitblue campaign, a nationwide show of support for the health workers risking their own lives to care for those with Covid 19.

It’s been a busy few weeks for the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS).

If you’ve seen the news recently you may have spotted a man flying in a jet suit in Langdale. I can confirm that this was not an elaborate prank – I’m proud to say I saw it with my own eyes.

Popular Kendal Calling festival raises thousands for charity - without going ahead

A POPULAR music festival has raised £12,000 for charity – despite not going ahead this year.

Kendal Calling will divide the money between North West Air Ambulance Charity, Alder Hey Children’s Charity, Guide Dogs for the Blind, St John Ambulance and Hospice at Home.
