The BBC Region - "The North East and Cumbria"

A current discussion in the Skybar (and in the 'Admin Thread' in our 'Communal Area') about the coverage of CUMBRIA issues on Skyscrapercity, reminded me that one of the reasons it is fairly logical that Cumbria is covered on SSC in the "North East England Forum" is because of the long-term links that Carlisle and the West Coast has with Newcastle for its MEDIA COVERAGE.

The "North East and Cumbria" BBC Region has been around for a very long time . . .

Here are some external links to websites covering the North East and Cumbria Region . . .

Entrepreneurial Cumbrian farmers star in BBC tv show

A garden compost made of sheep’s wool and bracken from the Cumbrian fells was at the centre of a new BBC TV series championing rural entrepreneurs.

Award-winning Dalefoot Composts, based on a 120-acre family farm in the hills of the Lake District, was highlighted on 'Back to the Land' presented by Kate Humble on BBC Two on Tuesday evening.

The wool that could turn you into the next Alan Titchmarsh is the brainchild of Jane Barker, a former university lecturer with a PhD in environmental science, and her sheep farmer husband Simon Bland.

Kendal farm celebrates 100th year with BBC Countryfile appearance

COUNTRYFILE presenter Adam Henson visited a South Lakeland farm to spend two days filming and learning about 100 years of traditional farming methods and a special breed of cattle.

The flagship BBC show visited Strickley, in Kendal, to talk to the Robinson family about their century of keeping and registering their Dairy Shorthorns in the oldest herd book in the world.
The Robinsons have farmed at Strickley for generations, and their knowledge of their breed and methods saw them picked out by the show's producers to feature as they turned their cows out for the first time this year.

Old Hutton film maker seeks location for new horror feature

A SOUTH Lakes film maker is on the lookout for a Cumbrian location at which to film the trailer for a new horror feature.

Rick McLeod, of Old Hutton, needs a derelict rural house to use as the setting for his forthcoming film 'Gemini', which he will be promoting in Los Angeles later this year.

The film, which was written by Mr Mcleod's associate Chris Torrento, focuses on twins with a sinister history behind them that comes back to haunt their home town.

Mr McLeod, who runs Celtic Storm Films with his wife, said: "It's more than your typical slasher style horror film, it focuses on the dark corners of the mind, often playing tricks in a sinister way. "Finding ideal locations is quite an exciting task as anything from old houses or factories and warehouses always prove beneficial in atmosphere.

Helvellyn tops poll of Britain's 100 favourite walks

WALKERS placed Helvellyn at the peak of popularity in a poll of Britain's 100 favourite walks.

England's third highest mountain was the overall winner in this week's ITV show presented by keen fellwalker Julia Bradbury and sports journalist Ore Oduba.

Around 8,000 people cast their votes and the result has been greeted on social media site Twitter by the Lake District National Park Authority and footpath repair team Fix the Fells, which looks after seven of the 100 routes - Helvellyn, Catbells (4th), Scafell Pike (5th), Buttermere (7th), Old Man of Coniston (8th), Coffin Route, Ambleside (27th) and Wainwright's Coast to Coast (54th).

In November 2017, Global (owners of Heart, Smooth, Capital radio stations) purchased Lakeland Radio and The Bay from the CN group. Lakeland Radio is broadcasts from studios at Plumgarths near Kendal and covers the Kendal, Windermere and Keswick areas. The Bay broadcasts from studios on St Georges Quay, Lancaster and covers the Morecambe Bay, Kendal and Windermere areas. The only other local commercial station in Cumbria is CFM which covers the northern part of the county.

Global purchases The Bay and Lakeland Radio

Global has bought Lancaster-based The Bay and Kendal-based Lakeland Radio from CN Group.

The two stations are the only ones owned by CN, which once owned a handful of stations in the Midlands along with Citybeat in Belfast.

It’s not known at this stage what plans Global has for the stations, but we’ll update this story when we know more. Global says it plans to extend its brands to the area, already partially served by Heart North West and Smooth North West.

The Bay covers North Lancashire and South Cumbria and reaches 85,000 listeners every week from its broadcast centre in Lancaster. Kendal-based Lakeland Radio transmits across the South Lakes with 16,000 weekly listeners.
(from Radio Today https://radiotoday.co.uk/2017/11/global-purchasesthe-bay-and-lakeland-radio/)

At 6am on Monday 5th March Lakeland Radio will become Smooth Lake District and The Bay will join the Heart network. Both stations started transitioning mid January when the playlists changed and long running on-air features were dropped.

Plans announced for The Bay and Lakeland Radio

Global is rebranding The Bay as Heart and Lakeland Radio as Smooth Radio.

The rebrands were announced today after Global bought the two stations from CN Group last year. The move adds a 23rd local station to the Heart network and a seventh station to the Smooth network.

Heart will be broadcast from Lancaster on 96.9, 102.3 and 103.2 FM and Smooth will be broadcast from Kendal on 100.1, 100.8 and 101.4. In the latest RAJAR, The Bay has 85,000 weekly listeners whilst Lakeland Radio has 16,000 weekly listeners.

...

The Bay launched in March 1993 and enjoyed success with its early classic hits format, reaching almost 50% reach across North Lancashire and South Cumbria. Lakeland Radio was launched to cover Kendal and Windermere in October 2001 as an independent station and the two have always broadcast separate programmes 24/7, despite more recent common ownership.
(from Radio Today https://radiotoday.co.uk/2018/01/plans-announced-for-the-bay-and-lakeland-radio/)

Local breakfast and drivetime shows will be kept along with local news bulletins but the rest of the programming will be networked from London. Both Lakeland and The Bay were great local stations so it will be a shame to see them go. It also sees the end of 100% local commercial radio in Cumbria since Bauer-owned CFM broadcasts programmes from Key103 and Metro radio outside of peak times.

Now what remains of the CN group (the newspapers) is to be sold to Newsquest.

Gazette parent company Newsquest set to buy CN Group

THE Westmorland Gazette's parent company is set to buy a family-owned publisher which runs daily and weekly newspapers in Cumbria.

CN Group has announced to its staff and shareholders that the Carlisle-based company is in the process of being sold to Newsquest Media Group Ltd.

Completion is expected shortly after a meeting on March 9, subject to shareholder approval.

CN Group publishes Barrow-based daily The Mail and the Carlisle News & Star, as well as weeklies the Cumberland News, Hexham Courant, Workington Times & Star, Whitehaven News and the Advertiser freesheet, which serves south Cumbria.
