Sainsbury's and Booths to open superstores
in Penrith, within a week of each other

By Matthew Legg, Business editor, News & Star, Wednesday 5th October 2011

Penrith is set for an £80 million retail boom which could turn it into a Cumbrian mecca for shoppers.

Supermarket giants Sainsbury’s and Booths are gearing up to open new stores in the town next month, creating 480 new jobs.

The Sainsbury’s store will form part of the New Squares development designed to transform the Penrith economy.

The investment was intended to reverse a trend which had seen increasing numbers of Penrith shoppers deserting the town for Carlisle and Kendal – but some community leaders say they are delighted to see Penrith get city-style amenities without spoiling the pleasant Eden Valley environment that makes it so attractive to tourists.

The new Sainsbury’s store will open on November 9 and will form part of the £77m New Squares scheme.

The project is well ahead of schedule, having previously been expected to open in February next year. New Squares itself has been dogged with controversy, having stalled in October 2008 when a bank withdrew funding. Sainsbury’s then offered to restart the project, in exchange for being allowed to build a bigger store, but the district council rejected the offer.

The development was saved in 2010 when Sainsbury’s exercised its legal right to complete the original scheme, which incorporates the supermarket, car park, shops, restaurants, cafes and bars, plus 199 houses and flats.

Penrith’s new Booths supermarket will open on November 15.

Tesco cutting hours at two west Cumbrian superstores

Superstore giant Tesco is to cut the opening hours at two shops in west Cumbria.

Whitehaven and Workington are among 76 stores that currently trade 24 hours a day.

When the change takes effect, they will close their doors to customers between midnight and 6am.

The company says the reduced hours will improve the shopping experience for customers.

The changes nationally are due to take place between March 14 and April 11 this year.

A statement says being responsive to the way customers want to shop means making more efficient use of time and resources, making savings which can be passed on to customers.

New jobs as Carlisle's Harveys store rises from the ashes

1 February 2016 10:18AM

NEW jobs are being created as furniture chain Harveys returns to Carlisle, more than two years after its store was destroyed by fire.

The national chain has rebuilt its Crown Street showroom following the arson attack, which reduced it to rubble, in November 2013.

It has now confirmed it will reopen the Harveys and Bensons for Beds store in March, initially creating eight jobs.

A spokesman said: “We are looking forward to reopening our Carlisle store on March 18, 2016, and are pleased to confirm that we will be recruiting for a number of positions.

“We have a store manager and assistant manager vacancy and three sales consultants vacancies in Harvey’s and the same in Bensons for Beds.”

Carlisle City Council leader Colin Glover said the re-launch was good news for the wider economy.

“It’s really positive that Harveys are committed to the city,” he added.

“When they lost the store it would have been easy not to rebuild but this shows real confidence in Carlisle.

“The fact that it brings jobs is also welcome and it all helps with the wider regeneration of that end of the city.”

Plans lodged for Carlisle's 12th supermarket

By Nick Griffiths and Pam McClounie

Last updated at 13:10, Thursday, 17 September 2015

Plans have been lodged for Carlisle’s 12th supermarket – the city’s fifth budget store.

Lidl has officially tabled proposals for a store off Warwick Road as the march of discount shops continues.

If approved, the store would create up to 40 jobs and fuel yet more cut-throat competition in an already packed supermarket scene.

It emerged in May that Lidl wanted to build its second city outlet opposite the junction with Victoria Road when the firm tested the waters by consulting on the move.

The company says there was a positive reaction to this and has now filed a planning application with Carlisle City Council.

Discounters Aldi and Lidl have been making inroads at the expense of the big four supermarkets – Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons, all of whom already have city stores.

Documents state the sales area of the new Lidl site would cover 1,424 square metres.

It would have 153 car parking spaces, with vehicle access coming from Warwick Road.

A report adds: “The application site benefits from good accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists as well as public transport.”

The application adds the store will be built to a “high quality architectural standard”.

Can't see this report from about a month ago from the News and Star:

"Lidl withdraws plans for second store in Carlisle

Plans for Carlisle’s fifth budget supermarket have been withdrawn in the wake of the floods.

Lidl had submitted an application to build its second store in the city, but has confirmed these have been pulled ahead of urgent meetings with the Environment Agency. It has however pledged its commitment to building in the city – and hopefully on that site. The plans, lodged in September, would have seen the supermarket built on land off Warwick Road – at its junction with Victoria Road. The proposed location was left underwater when Storm Desmond devastated the city."

BHS paid £5m to make way for Primark in Carlisle

11 February 2016 4:57PM

HIGH street store BHS received a payout of more than £5 million to make way for Primark, the News & Star understands.

Details of the deal to buy BHS out of its city centre lease and free up the prime Lanes site have been revealed by Carlisle City Council, which stumped up almost a quarter of the cash.

Leader Colin Glover said its share totalled £1,397,128, and described it as an investment in the future of the city.

The Lanes is owned by a company called Carlisle Shopping Centre Ltd, in which the council has a 23.66 per cent stake.
These are the sorts of property deals local authorities do all the time when they have got ambition. The alternative is you just say no and stay a backwater.

The biggest partner is property giant F&C Reit, which has been keen to bring Primark to Carlisle as an anchor store.

They contributed the majority of the payout.

Mr Glover said F&C Reit approached the council late last year with a proposal that would finally see the high street giant opening in The Lanes.

Until now it has been confidential, for commercial reasons, but with the deal now signed he is able to explain the reasoning behind it.

“Late last year there was a report which came to council to say they were in negotiations with Primark,” he said.

“The units they were looking at were occupied by BHS. As part of the deal it would require us to give permission and contribute financially to the costs.

“The upside is it gives a higher profile to the shopping area and attract others. Primark is one of the top three in attracting other retailers because they like to be where there is high footfall.”

The council’s share of the cash is coming from its reserves and the sale of under-performing assets, not taxpayers, he stressed.

Mr Glover explained why he believes it is a sound investment.

Tesco sets date for opening of One Stop Shop in former pub

19 February 2016 9:26AM

A NEW Tesco convenience store is due to open next month.

The new Tesco-owned One Stop Shop, in the former premises of the Bounty Inn on Victory Crescent, Maryport, will open on Thursday, March 3.

Work on fitting out the store began this week and 12 jobs have been created.

The Bounty Inn, a popular Maryport pub, was placed in receivership in 2010.

It was put up for sale as a going concern by the Convivial Group.

It continued trading under a series of managers until October 2014 when a notice appeared on the door, with no prior warning, to say it was then closed.

Building work starts on new Lidl supermarket in west Cumbria

8 March 2016 4:34PM

BUILDING work on a new Lidl supermarket has begun.

The German discount retailer is constructing the store, on Milltoft, off Curzon Street, Maryport, to be open by the end of this year.

It will create up to 30 jobs and be among the first of its kind, the firm said.

The town will be one of the first in Britain to have a "Lidl of the Future", modelled on more upmarket chains to try to attract a more affluent clientele.

Lidl announced its intention to build in Maryport in July 2014.

The supermarket - planned to be the company’s largest store in the UK - is being built on the site of two existing rugby pitches.

Allerdale council said the pitches would be reconfigured and upgraded and there would be no loss of facilities and safe pedestrian access.

New supermarket set to open in September

18 March 2016 8:27AM

A NEW supermarket will open in west Cumbria in September.

Work is well underway to clear the way for the Lidl shop at Milltoft, off Curzon Street, Maryport.

Construction traffic has been using a track straight on to Curzon Street, opposite the Spar garage while clearing the site.

Townsfolk were left to wonder if that would be the new access point for the supermarket once it opened.

But plans lodged with Allerdale council show that two turning lanes will be created for traffic travelling from Netherhall Corner and Workington to turn into Lidl and the garage.

Restaurant set to replace Carlisle city centre bar

21 March 2016 9:32AM

A BAR is set to close its doors for good, with an Italian restaurant chain poised to move in to take on the landmark site.

Owners of the Andalusian bar and bistro on Warwick Road in Carlisle have announced they are to close their business on May 2.

The closure paves the way for Prezzo to take over the running of the distinctive city centre building after they were granted planning permission for change of use from Carlisle City Council.

Bosses from the chain confirmed to the News & Star they wanted to open up a restaurant on the site but insisted negotiations were still ongoing. In a statement on the bar’s Facebook page, management then broke the news of the closure.
Our aim is to open a Prezzo restaurant on the site, however, negotiations still need to be completed

They wrote: “This has been a very difficult decision because we know that we are one of the busiest bars in Carlisle with amazing customers and friends who have supported us over the past six years
“We have been made an offer that was too good to turn down and made the decision it was better to leave when we are on top and the business is booming.

“We would like to thank everyone who has been on this journey with us – customers, staff, suppliers – you have all been amazing and you have all made the Andalusian the place it is today.

CARLISLE’S not known for its sizzling weather – but a new restaurant is set to make it barbecue season all year long.

The building which housed the former Keez Bistro on Cecil Street is to become Foxborough.

In the eatery, opening this week, American-style smoked and barbecue meats will be the order of the day.

Business partners and childhood friends Scott Nicholson and Ben Parker, both 33, are the brains behind Foxborough.

They hope the ceramic barbecue they have invested in will become a talking point.

Primark's 25-year Carlisle city centre deal

9 April 2016 11:23AM

Primark has signed a 25-year deal for its Carlisle store – understood to be one of the company’s biggest deals in the UK.

The retail giant’s long-term plans for the city have been labelled a major boost for the economy.

The budget clothing company has signed a deal with the owners of the Lanes Shopping Centre, Carlisle Shopping Centre Ltd, in which Carlisle City Council owns a 23.66 per cent stake.

Property giant F&C Reit is the biggest partner.

Councillor Les Tickner, who is responsible for finance, governance and resources, said: “It’s understood by the council to be the biggest, one of the longest, contracts ever signed by Primark.”

inRead invented by Teads

He said the deal, which is also one of the biggest for the city council, was part of months of negotiations – including one year free rent – to bring Primark to Carlisle, and one that felt right for the time.

It means after 25 years the council will be more than £2 million better off than it would be had the money it invested in the deal sat in the bank.

Carlisle city centre book shop on the move

9 April 2016 10:45AM

One of the best-known independent retailers on the high street in Carlisle is preparing for a new chapter.

The Matthews family is planning to relocate its popular Bookends store – but it isn’t going far.

The bookstore has been housed in its current Castle Street store for more than 20 years.

With that lease expiring, Bookends – which sells new titles, toys and other related items – is going to move in with its stablemates further along the street.

The move, due in May, will see Bookends housed in the same building as the long-established secondhand and antiquarian arm of the family-run operation, Bookcase.

Bookends is always my first port of call when I am book searching. What appeared to be a rather small shop at ground level had a cavernous basement area filled with books. I like books, so I love the place.

Not sure about the move to the Bookcase premises, as it moves the shop away from the centre of the city on the edge of the Market Place to a rather more peripheral location. For the second-hand bookshop that location was possibly not so important as regular second-hand book buyers would probably expect a second-hand bookshop to be a little out of the way, but for buyers of new books there will now be only one bookseller in the heart of the city, Waterstones. Hopefully there is enough loyalty from Bookends' customers.

Clearly the move makes financial sense to the owner in terms of rents etc (I seem to think he owns the Bookcase premises), and fingers crossed that the move is successful, as it is good to have an independent bookshop in the city.

Booths back in business

More good news. I always call into Booths when on my travels in the Lake District (usually for the fine selection of bottled beers) and have been missing it for the last few months. I think a trip to Keswick might be in order at the weekend , although I am not sure about a sand bag cake

Great to read of the progress made in Keswick, as it took a real hammering in December last year.

From the Times and Star, 14-04-2016

Booths in Keswick is holding a community celebration to mark its full reopening today.

Staff at the store are inviting people to join them for a celebratory day with local producer tastings from 11am to 3pm.

Brysons of Keswick have made a Sand Bag Flood Cake specially for the occasion. The craft bakery is one of a number of Cumbrian suppliers who will feature in the tastings alongside Appleby Creamery, Hawkshead Brewery and Claire's Handmade Preserves, of Fletchertown, near Wigton.

Later on in the evening from 7pm to 9pm a community reception will be held in Booths' cafe for locals and staff members. Those who go along will be given glasses of prosecco and entertained by local band Jazz Town Trio.

Passed through Keswick today and had a quick look around. Almost all of the businesses are up and running now, all the outdoor market stalls were in use and the town was really busy .

Booths confused me as it has been completely rearranged internally. I eventually found the beers and can report that the selection is as good as it used to be. Just a shame that it was near the start of the day and we didn't want to carry beers around all day.

That does, however, make for an excuse to go back soon.

On a not entirely unrelated matter (should be in the transport section) the bus ride around the western shore of Thirlmere and along the specially built road up to Dunmail Raise was very very interesting.

New Carlisle store starts to take shape for food firm

19 April 2016 8:24AM

Work has begun on a new Farmfoods store in Carlisle that will create seven new jobs.

A huge steel structure has gone up on land in Shaddongate, formerly occupied by Thomas Graham.

Farmfoods, an independent frozen food retailer, is moving from its current site on Lowther Street to the new premises.

A report to Carlisle City Council says: “The current store is not suitable for Farmfoods any longer because it is too small for their current style of retailing, it lacks customer car parking and has poor delivery facilities.”

The firm, which currently employs eight staff, says it has been hunting for new premises for the last five years.

The new site, next to Gate Garage and The Sandwich Mill, will offer car parking for 44 cars.

The report says: “It is expected the new store will employ around 15 staff.

I wasn't aware of that move. Seems a little bit odd to be moving from Lowther Street in the City Centre (next to Iceland and the other side of the street from The Lanes Shopping Centre) and relocating to somewhere very much on the periphery of the city. The Shaddongate site is near to Sainsbury's and one of the Aldi stores, but it is a fair step from the centre and so I suspect will be much more reliant on customers in cars than the current shop.

40 jobs as new Lidl supermarket set for planning go-ahead

18 May 2016 9:26AM

Budget supermarket Lidl looks set to open a new store with the creation of up to 40 jobs.

The chain, which has shops across Cumbria, wants to demolish Fairfield Garage, Travis Perkins and WCF Pet and Equestrian in Cockermouth

The scheme is expected to be given the go-ahead by Allerdale council’s development panel next Tuesday after officers recommended approval

Lidl wants to build a replacement WCF shop alongside the planned 1,777 sq m Lidl store, which would be open from 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sundays. Traffic access to the proposed development would be taken from Station Road, with a fourth exit added to the existing mini roundabout.

Delivery access will be from New Road to the north east of the site. There would be parking for 90 cars.

The original plans included a new pedestrian zebra crossing across Station Road. This has been removed at the request of highways officers who felt it would have a detrimental impact on traffic flow.

Instead they have asked that the developer should pay £41,500 towards pedestrian improvements elsewhere.

Two letters of representation have been submitted on behalf of Sainsbury’s, which is on the other side of the road.

They state that the proposed development would lead to congestion at the mini roundabout on Station Road and place additional pressure on car parking in the area.

Whilst a choice of supermarkets could be seen as a good thing for the consumer, does Cockermouth and environs need another one, and is there enough custom to support another one? The town already has a Sainsbury's and an Aldi.

I remember that not long after I moved up here Sainsbury's opened their first store in Cumbria in Cockermouth which was also the first supermarket in the town. Trips to West Cumbria always involved a detour to Cockermouth as I have always been fond of Sainsbury's offering and there wasn't one in Carlisle back then. There is now, and other supermarkets are available in Cockermouth, but I still call into Sainsbury's when I am in the area.

Former Hoopers building in Carlisle city centre to reopen as shop

26 May 2016 4:08PM

A prominent Carlisle department store building is poised to reopen as a shopping venue.

The Cumberland News has learned that the former Hoopers and Bulloughs building, on Castle Street, has been sold.

The proposal put forward is to continue with it as a retail building, rather than exploring some of the previously mooted suggestions of converting it or developing it for alternative uses.

Hoopers closed its doors for the final time in August 2012.

It reopened two months later as a discount designer outlet before closing once again in March 2013.

An attempt to sell the 38,000sq ft building at auction fell through.

It briefly opened its doors as Paris, run by Rebecca Menaged, in November 2014, but that closed under a cloud in September last year.

Lakeland unveils £1m flagship store in Windermere

It was a bit frustrating on my last visit to Lakeland in Windermere to see part of the shop closed off whilst work continued. It meant less chance to see lots of useful gadgets I never realised that I needed (although I did find a couple of items which I did need :) and gained a few ideas for future reference during my spells of enthusiasm for cookery)

Not sure why there are no photos of the refurbished shop in the article. I guess some will turn up in the Westmorland Gazette next week.

From in-Cumbria.
KITCHENWARE retailer Lakeland has unveied its new-look flagship store in Windermere after spending £1m on the refit.

The shop in Thwaites Lane was officially unveiled on Friday by Malcolm King, the firm’s longest-serving employee who has worked there for almost 45 years.

Half a million people visit the 12,200 sq ft store, which carries more than 1,500 items and a state-of-the-art kitchen where customers can watch product demonstrations.

Director of retail Bob Granger explained that all of the business’ 69 stores were due to be modernised.

He said: “Lakeland is continuing to undertake an extensive refit programme, with many of our stores up and down the country being modernised and improved with our customers in mind every step of the way.

“We’ve incorporated customer feedback and the latest technology into our new-look Windermere store and it’s incredibly exciting to be opening our doors after 12 months of planning and five months on site.

“We hope our customers will love the new shopping experience as much as we do.”

Fast-food chain KFC is planning to open two drive-through restaurants in Carlisle, creating up to 80 jobs.

It already has a city-centre outlet, in The Lanes shopping centre fronting Lowther Street, which has been trading since 2002.

And it has been searching for a site for a drive-through operation on a “main arterial road with a strong residential catchment area” since 2014.

It now says it wants to open two drive-throughs in the city – one at Kingstown, and another on London Road – and is prepared to pay £20,000 “finder's fees” to secure them.

It is seeking sites of at least 0.45 acres, in prominent locations with a strong residential catchment area.

There should be parking for 30 to 40 cars and a patio area for outdoor seating or to allow expansion.

KFC has two drive-through formats, for 82 and 114-seater restaurants of 2,648sq ft and 3,035sq ft respectively.

It opened a drive-through in Bridge Lane, Penrith, in 2007 and has advanced plans for a drive-through at Workington where it says a site is “under contract”.
