Free Northumberland car parking plan proposed

By David Black - 16th July 2013

Morpeth chamber of trade members John Beynon and Charles Robinson, with Medi Parry, manager of the Sanderson Arcade shopping centre

A major change has begun in Northumberland which will see controversial car parking charges scrapped – apart from in those communities which want to keep them.

Drivers visiting popular market towns will be able to park free for the first time in many years if long-running campaigns by traders for the removal of charges are supported by councillors and residents.

The Labour administration on the county council is delivering on its pre-election pledge to allow local communities to decide if they want to have parking fees or not.

Initial meetings are being arranged with town and parish councils in places where charges are currently in force – including Morpeth, Rothbury, Corbridge, Hexham, Berwick, Holy Island, Bamburgh, Seahouses, Beadnell and Alnwick.

These will lead to the development of community-based parking plans, including the option of getting rid of charges unless local councillors believe they should stay for traffic management purposes.

The process is aimed at ending what many claim is the unfair current system, which involves charging in rural communities and free parking in major towns such as Ashington, Blyth, Bedlington and Cramlington.

Charles Robinson, who chairs Morpeth Chamber of Trade’s car parking working group, said he was hopeful the abolition of charges was now in sight.

“Morpeth should have the opportunity to enjoy free car parking, like our neighbours in Ashington and Blyth have done for many years.

Pub bingo game pulls out winning £11 million Lotto numbers but couple walk away with just £50

A PUB bingo game took a dramatic twist when the winning numbers it generated were the same as those drawn in the National Lottery on the same day.

Marie and Dave Flory, pub managers at the Cumberland Arms in Bishop Auckland, were delighted to share the £50 they won for matching all six numbers in their own draw.

But they were gutted to have missed out on the £11.25m payout from Saturday’s Lotto when, in an amazing co-incidence, they realised the same six numbers from their own sweepstake has also been drawn in the official competition.

Related: Air show drama after Red Devils' parachute collapse

Corporal Mike French, from Gosforth, and Corporal Wayne Shorthouse, from Plymouth, have been identified as the two Red Devil parachutists involved in Friday night's terrifying scenes in the skies above Whitehaven harbour.

The parachutists were about to perform a manoeuvre called a stack in which one jumper is directly under another.

However, at about 1,800ft it is understood that Cpl Shorthouse’s body became entangled in his colleague's parachute. It partially collapsed, leaving them both dangling.

Alston residents and businesses join community share offer for fibre broadband
19:00, 26 June 2015 By Adam Luke

A trench dug for the community broadband project in Alston

A rural town will soon enjoy a fibre broadband service after households were invited to join an innovative community share offer.

Businesses and residents of Alston will benefit from superfast internet speeds and faster downloads as fibre optic cables are laid along part of an old railway track between the town and Haltwhistle in Northumberland.

The Government’s Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) is paying for part of the work, while Cybermoor Networks launched a community share offer earlier this month to raise £150,000 by July 31. People can invest £100, with a three-year commitment, which is eligible for 30% tax rebates through the Enterprise Investment Scheme.

Daniel Heery, Cybermoor project manager, said: “This is a great opportunity for people to invest in infrastructure that will bring benefits to the whole community. A fibre optic cable network along the valley will provide faster, more reliable connections, helping local people get more from the internet.”

Cybermoor, which started in 2001, has already completed fibre optic networks for the centre of Alston and a link to Nenthead.

Hard-up Cumbria County Council paid £10m on redundancies

By Emily Parsons

Last updated at 12:49, Friday, 03 July 2015

A cash-strapped council has paid out £10m in redundancy packages in the past two years.

Cumbria County Council has to cut its spending by £83m over the next three years and expects to shed about 1,800 jobs. This is on top of £130m of savings which it has already had to find.

Its annual accounts, published last Friday, reveal that in 2014/ 15 a total of 248 employees took redundancy, with all but one of those being voluntary. This cost the council £4,870,000 – an average of £19,600 per person. The figure was down on the previous year, in which £5,365,000 was paid to 226 people.

Leader Stewart Young admitted that the figures were high, but said it was the obvious consequence of such dramatic job losses.
