Free Northumberland car parking plan proposed

By David Black - 16th July 2013

Morpeth chamber of trade members John Beynon and Charles Robinson, with Medi Parry, manager of the Sanderson Arcade shopping centre

A major change has begun in Northumberland which will see controversial car parking charges scrapped – apart from in those communities which want to keep them.

Drivers visiting popular market towns will be able to park free for the first time in many years if long-running campaigns by traders for the removal of charges are supported by councillors and residents.

The Labour administration on the county council is delivering on its pre-election pledge to allow local communities to decide if they want to have parking fees or not.

Initial meetings are being arranged with town and parish councils in places where charges are currently in force – including Morpeth, Rothbury, Corbridge, Hexham, Berwick, Holy Island, Bamburgh, Seahouses, Beadnell and Alnwick.

These will lead to the development of community-based parking plans, including the option of getting rid of charges unless local councillors believe they should stay for traffic management purposes.

The process is aimed at ending what many claim is the unfair current system, which involves charging in rural communities and free parking in major towns such as Ashington, Blyth, Bedlington and Cramlington.

Charles Robinson, who chairs Morpeth Chamber of Trade’s car parking working group, said he was hopeful the abolition of charges was now in sight.

“Morpeth should have the opportunity to enjoy free car parking, like our neighbours in Ashington and Blyth have done for many years.

Community centre given DIY SOS style makeover

AN army of kind-hearted volunteers descended on a community centre to give it a DIY SOS style makeover.

More than 40 people got stuck into transforming Trimdon Grange Community Centre after its management committee won a competition held by Bishop Auckland’s JDP Contracting Services.

Committee treasurer, Pamela Duddin, and Pioneering Care Centre chief executive, Carol Gaskarth, worked together to apply for JDP’s second annual challenge.

Ms Duddin said the centre is used by more than 200 people from toddlers to the elderly.

She said: “We are over the moon. We never thought we would win because we’ve never won anything. Everyone is going to benefit, it will be great.”

The centre is more than 100 years old and 25 JDP employees spent Friday (July 31) doing various jobs including raising the stage and redoing all of the guttering and painting.

It is estimated that the work would have cost in the region of £15,000.

New Northbound festival has something for everyone

Last updated at 10:22, Thursday, 06 August 2015

Cumbria’s newest festival is just days away from its debut but it’s not just about the music.

Northbound is aiming to provide more entertainment for families than its predecessor CockRock which was more about embracing the musical side of the festival scene.

In this family environment you will find the Angels Gardens with tents designed to offer something for all ages to enjoy. There, younger children will have space indoors and out to create and play, under the supervision of professionals.

For those older children who would rather have their own space, there is the Teen Camp. The Teen Camp is a chilled out space with DJs, phone charging facilities and hair styling equipment where they can enjoy the atmosphere of a festival but not get thrown in at the deep end.

The Anything Goes Dome is the place to be if the intense crowds aren’t for you. There’s a variety of things happening in here so no matter what you enjoy there’s sure to be something in here for you.
