Carlisle Utd break record with latest victory in controversial Checkatrade Trophy

Eight wins in a row for the first time - as Grainger and Salkeld also enjoy memorable night in front of sparse crowd

9 November 2016 10:47PM

Carlisle Utd 4 Fleetwood Town 2: Carlisle United earned a club record eighth consecutive victory as they saw off Fleetwood in the Checkatrade Trophy.

And further history was made in the controversial competition as Danny Grainger equalled a record by scoring in his sixth successive appearance.

There was also a first senior goal from teenager Cameron Salkeld as Keith Curle's United topped northern group D to progress to the second round.

Yet their feats were watched by only 1,420 fans - just 22 from Fleetwood - as many again stayed away from the revamped Trophy in protest at its involvement of Under-21 clubs from the top two divisions.

On his full debut, midfielder Joe McKee confidently finished a low Grainger cross at the Waterworks End in the 14th minute.

Frotman Charlie Wyke headed a Reggie Lambe cross past keeper Alex Cairns five minutes later.

COME ON YOU BRAVEHEARTS: Four youngsters shout their support for Scotland

11 November 2016 11:10PM

Never was the term Bravehearts more apt as Scotland battled to pull off a superb 18-18 draw against New Zealand at Workington's Zebra Claims Stadium.

Workington proved a happy hunting ground for the Scots as superb performances across the park saw them overpower their bigger name rivals in the Four Nations clash.

Danny Brough and Lewis Tierney put in sterling performances and the pack matched the Kiwis, for whom Shaun Johnson ran the show.

Suppose the run had to come to an end at some time,---

This from the News & Star,--

Newport County 2 Carlisle United 0

12 November 2016 3:37PM

Carlisle United's long unbeaten run was finally ended - by League Two's bottom side.

Josh Sheehan and Rhys Healey scored for Newport as the Blues were beaten for the first time this season.

It was a first defeat in 16 league games for Keith Curle's side as they were well below par at Rodney Parade.
And it was also the first time the promotion-chasing Cumbrians have failed to score in 2016/17.

Sheehan gave struggling County a second-minute lead.

After linking with Jazzi Barnum-Bobb down the right, Sheehan raced into the box to fire home a weak clearance by Macaulay Gillesphey.

Is there really a footballer with the name Jazzi Barnum-Bobb?

It had to end eventually, I guess. Impressive though it was there were too many draws in the league (7 in 15 games before yesterday's defeat) which has left them some way behind Plymouth Argyle.

Showing my age as well, in that I read the report and wondered why Newport County weren't playing at Somerton Park :eek:hno: (I used to know all the football ground names off by heart and they have stuck, even though quite a few have long since been replaced)

Lots of chances for Workington Reds but just one goal

14 November 2016 9:16AM

Workington Reds boss Derek Townsley admitted they should have been more clinical against Corby Town despite winning 1-0 on Saturday.

Reds had the majority of possession and created plenty of opportunities but failed to find the back of the net after Scott Allison’s opener.

Corby were restricted to the odd chance on the break but they didn’t have a real shot on goal until the 67th minute.
ownsley said: “It was comfortable in that Aaron Taylor didn’t really have a save to make, or maybe one.

“But we were crying out for that second goal just to give us a little bit of breathing space
.

“If there was one criticism today then it would be that we were not clinical enough in front of goal. But I think it would be unfair to them as I think, as a group, they worked their socks off.

"I said I was pleased they got the win and they got the reward for all their effort because I think it would have been cruel if we hadn’t taken the three points.”

Workington Comets sign Danish former Scunthorpe and Berwick ace Thomas Jorgensen

18 November 2016 10:44AM

Workington Comets have signed Danish racer Thomas Jorgensen.

Jorgensen is Comets' second signing for the rebranded Championship next season after Matt Williamson committed to a third year at Derwent Park last Friday.

The former Scunthorpe and Berwick ace has been a long-term target for Comets' promotion and joins on a 7.45 average, leaving Workington 28.97 points for their remaining quintet.
Club owner Laura Morgan said: "We've looked at him the last couple of years because we really like him, he goes well around Workington and we think he has a lot of potential.

"We almost did a deal with him last year but, at the last minute, he decided he'd stay with Berwick.

"I'm aware Thomas has wanted to come to Workington and that makes a difference to me.

"He'll no doubt be in a few people's teams or wishlists for next year but I don't think too many people will be expecting him so it's a nice surprise."

Carlisle Utd 3 Exeter City 2

19 November 2016 5:07PM

Charlie Wyke struck a 97th minute winner to cap an incredible late fightback for Carlisle United.

The striker scored his second of the game deep into injury-time to clinch a dramatic comeback win for Keith Curle's side.

United seemed to be heading for a second straight defeat with just two minutes of normal time left.
But sub Shaun Miller headed an equaliser before Wyke's last-gasp goal.

Sub Jamie Devitt was sent off in the final seconds, while Exeter had a 100th-minute goal disallowed as keeper Christy Pym fouled Mark Gillespie as he bundled the ball in.

Some excellent news for Cumbria, from the News and Star:

Tour of Britain's £5m boost for Cumbria

THE Tour of Britain cycle race was worth £5.36m to Cumbria's economy, new figures show.

The county hosted stage two of the race in September, when the 117-mile route from Carlisle to Kendal took in many of the areas worst affected by last winter's floods, including Cockermouth and Keswick.

Figures compiled by data analyst Frontline suggest that the economic benefit to Cumbria of £5.36m was greater than on any of the previous six occasions that the county has hosted the event.

Hotels, retailers and transport all benefited.

This year’s Cumbria stage was watched by an estimated 175,000 spectators, up from 105,000 the last time Cumbria hosted the Tour in 2015.

Frontline also found that:

* 60 per cent of visitors came from outside Cumbria and 34 per cent stayed overnight;

* Average spend by overnight visitors was £98 per group;

* 89 per cent of visitors described the race as “very enjoyable”;

* 58 per cent said they were inspired to cycle more often;

* 1.165m viewers watched television coverage on ITV4.

The undoubted highlight of the stage was the brutal climb of The Struggle to the top of Kirkstone Pass, where spectators lined the road to urge the riders on.

Sports clubs in the city thriving with Carlisle United, Carlisle Cricket Club and Carlisle Rugby Club all topping their leagues

2 December 2016 11:41AM

Sport in Carlisle is thriving, with three of the city's main clubs sitting top of their respective leagues.

Carlisle United Football Club, Carlisle Cricket Club and Carlisle Rugby Club have all contributed to a hat-trick to remember for supporters of Carlisle sport.

All three clubs were hit by Storm Desmond last December - but all three have bounced back in incredible style, too.

When the clean-up operation was under way at the cricket club's Edenside ground earlier this year, they could have hardly dreamed for a better season.

But after two seasons in Division One of the North Lancs & Cumbria Cricket League, they will return to the top table next campaign after winning the league.

A remarkable year saw Ben Davidson strike back-to-back home centuries and Alex Raybould make history when he became the club’s first bowler to take all 10 wickets in a match, which were some of the highlights in a superb campaign.

Plans are now being put in place for next year as the club celebrates reaching a major milestone.

Carlisle United knocked out of FA Cup by Rochdale

3 December 2016 5:00PM

Carlisle Utd 0 Rochdale 2: Second-half goals from Steven Davies and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing saw Carlisle United knocked out of the FA Cup by Rochdale.

The League One side became the first team to beat the Blues at Brunton Park this season in the second round tie.

Davies gave them the lead on 49 minutes when his deflected effort beat Mark Gillespie.

And sub Mendez-Laing drilled home a low finish in the third minute of injury-time to send Keith Hill's team into Monday's third round draw.

In front of a 4,426 crowd, Carlisle threw plenty at Dale but struggled to force clear-cut chances, especially once the visitors had edged in front.

Ten-man Carlisle Utd hold on for battling point at Luton after Raynes sent off

10 December 2016 5:56PM

Luton Town 1 Carlisle United 1: Ten-man Carlisle United held on for a point against promotion rivals Luton after Michael Raynes saw red in the second half.

The centre-back was dismissed for what appeared to be deemed an elbow on Danny Hylton in the 83rd minute at Kenilworth Road.

Manager Keith Curle said he would review footage before deciding whether to appeal the decision which will rule Raynes out of the next three games.

After his dismissal, the Blues survived late pressure in 10 added minutes to claim a battling draw as they remained second in League Two.

Jason Kennedy had given United the perfect start with a fifth-minute goal at Luton before Hylton quickly hit back.

The Blues then lost both Mike Jones and Danny Grainger to injury on a draining afternoon in Bedfordshire.

Brisley wonder goal helps Carlisle Utd to victory against Yeovil

17 December 2016 5:01PM

Carlisle Utd 2 Yeovil Town 1: Carlisle United kept up their promotion challenge with a tight victory against Yeovil at Brunton Park.

A wonder goal from Shaun Brisley and a Charlie Wyke header put the Blues in command at the break.

Nathan Smith's goal in the 47th minute then made it an edgy second half.

But Keith Curle's side held on to remain second in League Two at Christmas,

Brisley opened the scoring with a memorable effort after 10 minutes.

The centre-half beat keeper Artur Krysiak with a dipping volley from more than 30 yards out as United stunned their visitors.
The sweetly-struck effort was Brisley's first United goal.

There was almost an equally impressive second eight minutes later.

But Shaun Miller's deft chip came back off the crossbar, as Nicky Adams put the rebound over.

Wyke, though, made no mistake on 36 minutes when he met an Adams corner and powered home a header.
