A summary of the project from the Egyptian forum:

Quote:

Overview:
  1. The city will eventually stretch over a staggering 490 square kilometres, with the first phase, which will take at least five years, encompassing 168 square kilometres. That alone would swallow up a major portion of Cairo's area.
  2. The new capital will boast the tallest building on the African continent.

Infrastructure:
  1. two pipelines will connect the new capital with the Nile, each with pumping stations with a capacity of 125,000 cubic metres per day. Eventually a third line will provide water from the Red Sea, presumably desalinated.
  2. During the first five-year phase, 240,000 housing units will be constructed, 30,000 of them underway now, with many nearing completion.
  3. The Council of Ministers building and a parliament building are under construction at the head of a long concourse lined by 32 ministries.
  4. The headquarters of the Coptic Church has been asked to move out there, and construction of a new cathedral twice the size of Cairo's main cathedral is already well underway. A grand mosque will be built across the street.
  5. The supreme court will move there as well.

Transportation:
  1. A new airport built specially for the capital has just opened, initially for domestic flights but eventually for international flights as well.
  2. Two rail lines will connect Cairo to the capital, but not conveniently unless you live in one of the new upscale communities east of the present city.
  3. An electric rail, already under construction, will use the existing Cairo-Suez rail line, but will only go as far as Adly Mansour station at the very end of Cairo's third metro line, itself well beyond Cairo Airport. That means 18 stops, or over an hour, just to get from central Cairo to the new train line.
  4. A second line, an elevated monorail, will eventually connect the capital to Cairo's south eastern outskirts.

Services:
  1. The city will have its own financial district, where the central bank and stock exchange will relocate. Commercial and investment banks will be asked to transfer their headquarters there too.
  2. There will be at least six international universities from the U.S., Britain, Canada, Sweden, Hungary and France, according to the Ministry of Higher Education.
  3. Of these, the Capital International University (a public university) and the Canadian International College are already under construction.

Recreation:
  1. A 35-km-long central green belt covering 5,000 feddans (2,100 hectares) will wind through the city's centre.
  2. The city will have fitness trails, a sculpture garden, an outdoor adventure park for mountain biking and rock climbing, a "healing and sensory garden", an "earth garden with canals and fossil trails", bicycle and pedestrian paths, horseback riding trails and waterways for canoeing and sailing, a "floating forest", meditation gardens, reflection pond, a manmade river and a wetland park.
  3. There will also be a zoo and wildlife park, an aquarium with a dolphin show area, an arboretum and botanical gardens.
  4. According to a map, a new amusement park with a 250 metre Ferris wheel is planned. This would eclipse the current highest Ferris wheel, the 168-metre High Roller in Las Vegas.
  5. The city will also have a sports stadium, sports fields, an amphitheatre, an observatory, a museum of science and technology and an art museum.
  6. The site for a new opera house is already under preparation.
  7. In short, there will be 2.15 square metres of green space per capita.

CAIRO — China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) finalized on Wednesday a $3 billion deal to build a massive Central Business District (CBD) in Egypt's new administrative capital, some 50 kilometers east of Cairo.

[...]

Under the deal, CSCEC will build the CBD on a total area of about half a square km. The district includes a 345-meter high skyscraper, the would-be highest building in Africa, 12 business complexes, five residential buildings and two hotels.

The whole project is scheduled to be finished within 43 months.

[...]

The construction of Egypt's new administrative capital is a national mega project that is designed to gradually expand over an area of 700 square km.

With government departments and ministries moving in after its completion, business centers, residential housing, hotels, green spaces and other facilities will also be built, which will provide vast job opportunities.
The CBD, located near the R3 residential area, will include the tallest building in Africa at 345 meters. This is part of the first phase of the project and will be finalized before 2022.

It's going to be an agglomeration of buildings, one for each agency apparently.

Looks like any random failed planned satellite capital, like Brasilia, Canberra, ... Modernist planning at its blandest.
Great chance for a modern urban extension missed imho.

The company Better Home that built Midtown New Cairo have bought a plot of land in the new capital between the Green River and the planned Expo City where they will be building the city's first villa district there. Talaat Mustafa Group, one of the largest real estate companies in the country, have also bought a plot but they haven't revealed any additional information.

Yes it will, but it's undecided as of yet. A few names have surfaced but they're most likely just placeholders at this point, like Wedian (Valleys, since the city is composed of several valleys - The Tech Valley, Finance Valley etc.) or El Mosta'bal (The Future). A lot of Egyptians are also ironically calling it Pi-Sisi, like Pi-Ramessess, the capital built by Ramesses II to replace Thebes.

While I do agree that this project is looking similar to those examples I have to point out that Cairo has swallowed massive amounts of farmland around the Nile in the past two decades. It's no longer sustainable, especially not with Egypt's population growth and limited arable land. If this city manages to attract it's targeted population it will take a huge load off of Cairo, so I'd say that its success is crucial. And it's not the only planned city being built right now, if you want to see the progress on the other cities of the 4th generation of New Urban Communities that we're keeping track of: El Alamein, El Galala.

I now kinda want Egypt to actually name this place with an ancient Egyptian name!

Unfortunately I doubt that this city will get one. Egypt is terrible at naming new cities, in the past fifty years naming convention has followed two patterns: military themed ones (6th of October, 10th of Ramadan, Obour etc.) or New [insert city name here] (New Cairo, New Ismailia, New Luxor etc.). I wanted them to name it Memphis, because it's an epic name in both English and Arabic (Manf). But the site of Memphis is the Giza suburb of Mit Rahina, very far from this location. This location doesn't have any naming precedent as far as I know.

Cairo technically has an ancient Egyptian name though. Al Qahira (The Conquering One) is a phono-semantic match for the Coptic name of the city, Kahire (Kahi-Re), which means Land of the Sun, or Land of Ra, a.k.a. Heliopolis, the "City of the Sun" where the temple of Ra was located. The site of the ancient city of Heliopolis is the suburb of Ain Shams (Eye of the Sun in Arabic).
