Marjorie and Arnold Ziff Building | 20m | 5 fl | Completed 2008

http://www.leedstoday.net/ViewArticl...icleID=1899924
£15m uni gift in memory of business chief
by Howard Williamson
THE largest donation made to the University of Leeds will fund a striking new landmark building dedicated to the memory of city businessman and philanthropist Arnold Ziff.
Money for the £15m scheme has come from the Ziff family's charitable foundation and businesses, Town Centre Securities plc and Stylo.
The Marjorie and Arnold Ziff Building – which will house a range of student services – will stand on Beechgrove Terrace and form a new gateway to the university.
Plans for the building will be considered by the city council in the near future and the university hopes building work will start in late March.
It is scheduled to last until May 2008 with staff taking occupation during the summer of that year.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Michael Arthur said: "It is fitting that such an iconic building should be made possible by an act of philanthropy which echoes early 20th century donations.
"We are tremendously grateful to the Ziff family for their continuing interest and generosity to the university."
Wonderful
The six-storey building will consolidate student administrative services under one roof, bringing together those carried out at six separate locations across the university.
The Ziff building, which will have a light and airy foyer, will stay open in the evening for part-time and continuing-education students to be taught in a secure environment.
It will also provide offices for the senior management team and will include a new meeting room for the university council.
Arnold Ziff began studying economics at Leeds in 1944 but his education was interrupted by war service.
His company Town Centre Securities developed the Merrion Centre which was then the largest indoor shopping centre in Britain.
By the time of his death in 2004, his shoe firm Stylo plc was one of the largest footwear retailers in the UK.
His widow Marjorie said: "The building will provide a permanent reminder of Arnold's contribution to the community of Leeds."
Sons Michael and Edward, both former students of the university, said: "It is wonderful that this exciting phase of the university's development will be named after our parents."

Looks a wonderful building. Its amazing how much the universities have, are and will transform the city centre and beyond. Theres not only all these university schemes, but also the takeover of Headingley to form Leeds Met Carnegie. Quite a university.

Btw, the abbreviation of million is m. £15m

Looks like a fantastic design! I'm sure it will get built, as I would think that the Ziff family are looking for a lasting monument to Arnold's legacy.

Wasn't Arnold Ziff the multi-millionaire who tried to steal Marge away from Homer?

In terms of location - its says in the article that its the new gateway to the university but I don't think it will be really.

It'll be situated to the left of the Parkinson Building and down that little road if you are by car from Woodhouse Lane - kind of across the road and down a bit from that nicely restored church (now the theology dept I think.) Anyway currently on this site are a lot of mobile classrooms.

Other Uni developments include the new Business/Innovation Centre buildings on the old Leeds Grammar School cricket pitch of Clarendon Road - currently under construction.

And I think they are building a new theatre space on campus now drama studes are moving back from Bretton Hall - this was something I saw on a Plans Panel agenda over summer so don't have a progress report to hand or anything.

It should be close to the Edward Boyle library then. Near the tree on the right!

Good, keep our eyes on this one, it'll be a great addition to 'cultural' and 'educational Leeds'.

I don't think it is for this building though. I think they are relaying a path on the green opposite the Edward Boyle Library. I am right in thinking that this will be opposite the back of the Micheal Sadler building aren't I?
