On hold not necessary means cancel, the construction could be resumed when the economical climate get better I guess.

What's wrong with economic climate? Oil price is highest for the last 4 years.

Keep politics out of this forum. We are discussing buildings here.

So it is not allowed to say that a building is cancelled for political rather than economical reasons when, in fact, building is cancelled for political reasons?

In this one or any other project, the environmental forces that could affect and suddenly stop any new project include economic forces and political forces, too. There are also 4 other possible environmental forces that could have stopped it:

The tower is on hold till the restructure of the contracting company finishes. They have started working on infrastructure works for the city which is with another contractor, as seen from the images above. There is a lot of work going on the ground now but not on the tower itself.

Please don't discuss the politics of KSA here unless there is relevance to the project. Thanks.

Those who wonder, what was the "environmental force" what actually destroyed this project.

If that's true, than Alwaleed simply needs to rename it the Trump Tower in Jeddah, and the construction would restart immediately. And America might even pay for it.

If that kind of conspiracy was true, it would actually good news, because then construction might finally restart in 2025, after a new US president is sworn in.

The big advantage is the dry climate in Jeddah. Unlike in other places in the world, the tower will not be damaged by frequent rainfalls. Even in "rainy" November (with about 26mm of rainfall) the concrete dries very fast once the rain is over. They could basically continue in five, ten or even twenty years.

https://www.dailysabah.com/business/...-by-58-percent

Fortune of richest Saudi, Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, dives by 58 percent

His 95-percent stake in the Kingdom Holding, which makes up Talal's most valuable asset, has dropped 70 percent in value since 2014, the website added.

According to Bloomberg, the firm's shares fell more than 20 percent following the prince's detention last November and "have never fully recovered" since.

Talal, a regular on the Arab world's richest list, is the second biggest shareholder of Twitter Inc. He has investments in Apple, Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., Citigroup, and the Four Seasons, Fairmont and Movenpick hotel chains. He is also an investor in ride-sharing services Lyft and Careem, both competitors to Uber in the U.S. and the Middle East, respectively.

Prince Talal and two other heads of three Saudi owned prominent television networks were among the high profile figures arrested in November.

Pretty sad! I don't see how this project will ever be built! Not even the gov will care since they have their own Neom plans.

So what's going on with that new city, since they used that as an excuse to shut this tower down? Is there a thread for it? Is there anything happening on the ground?

not to distract too much with politics, but the economic forum which is meant to attract foreign investments seems to be struggling this year for obvious reasons. I would wait until Saudi Arabia disappears from the press for a while and then see if any new development happens.
