.....and sure enough Boeing is already up $1.09 after O Learys rant this morning, as I predicted. It is in fact Ryanair who are down.

A long article in the Seattle Times, by Dominic Gates.

https://www.seattletimes.com/busines...ted-over-cost/

Quote:
Boeing rejected 737 MAX safety upgrades before fatal crashes, whistleblower says
a taster of the nub of the article. Boeing chose not to integrate a system they already had on the 787 into the MAX avionics. Some engineers pushed for it and it was pushed back against on grounds of cost and that pilots would need training on it. It also would have stopped the MCAS from activating in the first place.

Quote:
Synthetic airspeed is a new system that provides an additional, indirect calculation of airspeed using different sensors, including the plane’s angle-of-attack sensors. The system enters the airplane’s angle of attack, its weight, the position of its control surfaces and other parameters into a proprietary Boeing algorithm to come up with an independently measured airspeed reading.

The independence of the synthetic reading means that if it matches the direct airspeed readings, it verifies the data as highly reliable. If there’s a discrepancy, the air data is rejected and the plane’s automated systems won’t use it.

Ewbank’s complaint cites a study that found air data reliability, and airspeed awareness in particular, as a “dominant theme” in airplane accidents where the pilots lost control.

The only Boeing airplane using synthetic airspeed today is its latest all-new jet, the 787 Dreamliner.

The MAX 'fixes' move closer...but what exactly??

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...oeing-737-maxd

Big difference between 6 hours of work and 120 hours of work, the former is a s/w fix and 'destorage' routine. The latter is a major modification to some hardware plus the above.

Quote:
The union estimated it would take 200 man hours of work to get Southwest’s 34 grounded Max planes ready to fly again, while the airline put the number at “an average of 120 hours plus per aircraft.” The carrier will first fly new Max planes that Boeing has built during the grounding, before operating the 34 stored by the airline in Arizona, SWAPA said.
