They destroyed a beautiful building for this hotel. In Athens, there are so many buildings from the 60s and 70s that can be dismantled or reconstructed, and they destroyed a beautiful sample of art deco. Nearby was a less valuable building from the 80s, which can easily be replaced by this new hotel. https://www.google.ru/maps/@37.97805...7i13312!8i6656

09 MAY 2018 / Τhe SNFCC, SNF’s Largest Single Grant, Awarded the RIBA Award for International Excellence 2018

https://www.snf.org/en/newsroom/news...cellence-2018/

Quote:
The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) announced that the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) has been awarded the international prize for architecture, RIBA Awards for International Excellence 2018.

The awards are given every two years to the most inspired and significant new buildings constructed around the globe. The SNFCC was the only Greek nomination among 62 buildings in 30 countries.

The SNFCC, designed by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop, constitutes an international complex for sustainability, culture, education and entertainment, housing in its premises the new facilities of the National Library of Greece and the Greek National Opera, as well as the 210,000 m² Stavros Niarchos Park. The SNFCC is the largest single grant of the SNF which covered exclusively the cost for its design, construction and full equipment. In February 2017, following the completion of the SNFCC’s construction, the SNF delivered the SNFCC as a gift to the Greek State and the Greek society, the legal owner of the project. At the same time, the SNF announced its commitment to continue supporting the SNFCC for the following five years, through grants totaling up to €50 million for the implementation of public programming and for covering SNFCC’s operational costs.

Quote:
This is a project of huge generosity, gifted by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, combining the new National Opera House, National Library and park. The park is packed most days and the library, Athens’ first public library, is constantly busy with young students.

The diagram of the scheme is formal and dramatic, somewhat related to the Acropolis, with the park rising up over the buildings to provide a summit surmounted by an iconic floating roof - a new landmark in Athens. The scheme is approached from the city at the north side where the entrances to the park neatly interlock with the existing street grain. As one emerges from the city there are uninterrupted views up the sloping grounds that lead to the topmost level facilities. These include 360o viewing terraces from which one can look out over the sea-front and back towards Athens, including the Acropolis.

Looks great! Industrial architecture is not very prominent, so I'd say great and brave choice.

A nice drone video about the reconstruction of the legendary Astir Palace complex in Vouliagmeni that is going to open this year as the new Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel. Enjoy!

This Secret Part of Athens Has White-sand Beaches, Charming Tavernas, and Stunning Ancient Temples.

Quote:
This summer, however, all that is likely to change, thanks to a massive investment project on the cape of Lemos, including the launch, next month, of the Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens — the first Four Seasons in Greece (doubles from $985). For some, the new hotel will be an introduction to the area, but for many others, and Greeks in particular, it will represent the reinvention of a modern classic. That’s because it will occupy the Astir Palace — a sprawling 1961 landmark built during the contemporary city’s heyday, after World War II and the Greek Civil War, but before the military dictatorship that ruled Greece from 1967 to 1974.

Throughout the 60s, the hotel was the place to be seen. “There is a saying that anybody who was anybody has slept in one of the beds at the Astir Palace,” says Efi Pratsoli, corporate marketing director of Astir Palace Vouliagmeni. Frank Sinatra once had to flee adoring crowds through the hotel kitchen, while Brigitte Bardot caused a stir by strolling the beach in a wide-brimmed sun hat and a tiny pink bikini. The Astir Palace continued to attract big names right up until 2016, when the final guest before the hotel closed was Barack Obama, on his last official visit to Greece as president.

In June, the hotel will reopen after a $123 million renovation, with 303 redesigned guest rooms; eight restaurants, including a branch of the Nobu franchise, Matsuhisa Athens; and a spa inspired by the teachings of Hippocrates. The restaurant at Astir Beach, formerly a TGI Fridays, will relaunch as the latest from Nice-n-Easy, a farm-to-table restaurant group with seven outposts around Greece (entrées $25–$50). “In the old days, the Fridays would close at eight,” says founder Dimitris Christoforidis. “That was a crime, because the sun sets right in front of you.” The new Nice-n-Easy will stay open until 11:30 p.m. and serve contemporary Greek cuisine.

Recent architecture from the Athenian suburbs.

4th Glyfada Public nursery

Design by: KLab Architecture
http://www.klabarchitects.com/

Quote:
One of the biggest challenges of this project was to give prominence to the construction method of prefabrication that defined the final form of the building.
The concept of the project was to design a building that would relate to the scale of its users while also introducing a new typology, that of the urban village. The main module draws inspiration from archetypal drawing of a house as perceived by a child. Its replication created the classroom unit and consequently, the whole complex.
The nursery school was designed so that all the classrooms have three open sides, organized around a central courtyard, and is further configured by smaller atriums which internal views from communal areas.

Residence in Voula

Design by: ISV Architects

http://www.isv.gr/

Quote:
An existing building has been renovated into a home for a family of four, in Voula, Attica. The structure of the building has been preserved and added to where necessary, so that it may fulfil the intrinsic functions of the new residence.
The existing building, built as a stand-alone construction, was situated on site, ignoring its rather interesting, natural contour. Additionally, its architectural language was dominated by roofs, with intense and varied inclines, a diversity of openings and balconies in disparate shapes, creating an unpleasant aesthetic result which was at odds with the serenity and peacefulness that a residential building should convey.
During the re-evaluation process, the architects aimed to simplify the geometry and elements of the building volume, in order to create a form which would be characterised by architectural clarity and integrity, as well as to landscape the immediate surrounding area, so as to restore its harmonious relationship with the building.

Residence in Kapandriti

Design by: Dionisis Sotovikis, Eva Tsouni,Kirki Mariolopoulou, Chrissa Skiada

http://www.workshop-s.com/index.php/el/

Quote:
Earthy light

The design of the residence in Kapandriti is based on the relationship between man and landscape, especially earth. Located on a long and narrow, steep hillside plot, it unfolds in two overground levels and a basement, integrating along the site’s contour lines. The street level entrance is formed by two parallel load-bearing walls that flank the staircase and, tearing up the ground, lead to the interior. Upon entering the house, visual contact with the remaining landscape is interrupted, with only the sky as guidance. In contrast, the underground entry converses with the landscape and the soil in a mystical atmosphere created by two skylight strips and two wall openings with views to the ground and soil. The ground floor houses the private zone with the bedrooms. All openings here are externally panelled with the same cladding as the façade and open or close according to the users’ will for unification with or isolation from the landscape. There is also a study where a window-shop opening showcases the section from bottom ground to top grass, with large rocks in the background. Another window-shop opening on the floor lights up and frames the ground and the foundations of the house. In contrast to the ground floor, the first floor, comprising the unified communal zone with the sitting and dining areas and the kitchen, is surrounded by glass, allowing views of Lake Marathon to become part of the living space.

Hyatt Announces Plans for a Grand Hyatt Hotel in Athens
The property will mark the first Grand Hyatt hotel in Greece and first Hyatt hotel in Athens

Quote:
Hyatt Hotels Corporation (NYSE: H) announced today that a Hyatt affiliate has entered into a franchise agreement with both Henderson Park and Hines for the first Grand Hyatt hotel in Greece, Grand Hyatt Athens. The opening is expected in Q3 2018. The hotel will be managed by Kokari Limited and will deliver bold and vibrant luxury for guests in this iconic destination.
“We are thrilled to announce plans for the first Hyatt property in Athens with Henderson Park, Hines and Kokari,” said Takuya Aoyama, vice president, development for Eastern Europe, Russia & CIS at Hyatt. “We have long sought to bring the Grand Hyatt brand’s celebratory luxury to the Greek capital. This deal represents a significant milestone in Southeast Europe, an important growth market for Hyatt with recent Hyatt development announcements in Turkey and Bulgaria.”

The 310-room hotel will be centrally located on Syngrou Avenue in Athens’ Koukaki district, close to golf courses, restaurants and within walking distance of Filopappos Hill. Grand Hyatt Athens will be uniquely designed to reflect its Greek culture with dramatic architecture and innovative design. First-class accommodations will welcome guests along with a spectacular rooftop bar and restaurant, an outdoor swimming pool and a stunning view of the Acropolis. Additional amenities will include best-in-class food and beverage venues, more than 11,600 square feet of meeting space as well as a spa and fitness center.

“Our investment into Grand Hyatt Athens was driven by its potential as a luxury asset with a historic heritage,” said Nick Weber, founding partner of Henderson Park. “Grand Hyatt is one of the world’s leading premium brands and working with Hyatt on this hotel is an endorsement of our ambitious strategy and a strong addition to Henderson Park’s portfolio of iconic European hotels. We hope this marks the first stage of building a rewarding, long-term relationship with Hyatt.”

Some beautiful photos of the impressive Anangel Maritime Headquarters that was finished recently. Greek newspaper 'To Vima' took a very interesting interview from the architect who designed the building, Rena Sakellaridou from SPARCH Architects.

Renzo Piano and his team from Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW) presented preliminary design approaches for a new building to be erected in the current location of the Sisters’ House and Nursing Sisters’ buildings on the premises of the General Hospital “Evangelismos”, in Athens. The building will serve as the Chair of the University’s Faculty of Nursing and take the place of the Sisters’ House and Nursing Sisters’ building. Renzo Piano will also design the new General Hospital of Komotini and the Children’s Hospital in Thessaloniki as part of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation new grant totaling at least €200 million to support the Greek Health sector.

Quote:
RPBW is also working closely with the British firm Llewelyn Davies, which specializes in healthcare architectural design and is expected to contribute with its experience in large-scale projects in the healthcare sector.A team from the Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Medicine International is collaborating with the SNF in an advisory capacity.Regarding the infrastructure projects, following the successful model of the Stavros Niarchos Foundational Cultural Center (SNFCC), the RPBW team is working closely with the Greek architectural office, Betaplan, as well as several other local partners, including the landscape architect, Helli Pangalou, who will undertake the design and execution of the study for the surrounding spaces.
During the meeting with the Prime Minister, the architect Renzo Piano presented the preliminary designs for the three infrastructure projects: the new General Hospital of Komotini, the Children’s Hospital in Thessaloniki, as well as the building at Evangelismos Hospital in Athens that will serve as the Chair of the University’s Faculty of Nursing. Particular emphasis in the discussion was given to the architect’s people-centric approach in the design of the projects, the integration of each project into its natural environment, the use of natural light, and the respect, through the creation of infrastructure, for the needs of the people who are hospitalized, their friends and families, and the employees of the structures to be erected.
