M. Gournianakis, architect
C.Ntetsika, architect
A.Skorletou, architecture student

K.Palli, designer
Structural Study:

Study of Acoustics:
Th.Timagenis, architect

Area of Plot: 1121,00 m2
Building Area: 5.000 m2
Client: "Ark of the World
"

Quote:
The reconstruction of a former industrial building into a building used for "Special Care for Mother and Child ".
It includes administration services, dining room, kindergarten, learning auxiliary rooms, accommodation and conference room for 150 people.
The minimal rectangular shape characterizes the morphological aspects of the building.
The reference to the concept of the “Ark”, together with the need of a warm, friendly environment led to the design of a vertical cladding. The two main facades of the building have wood in print in exterior cladding of natural color.
The choice of energy-saving solutions and the need for maintenance-free materials led to the development of systems with double-sided breathable shell.
The flat surface of the elevation becomes more playful with the formation of the opening in a free, horizontal and vertical arrangement and the use of color around the frames.

Α few days ago I took with my mobile phone some photos of three new buildings at the center of the Athens.

The new offices of the Bodosakis Foundation at Vas. Sofias Avenue.

The new Coco Mat hotel in the posh and chic area of Kolonaki is almost ready.

Finally the building that will house the precious Goulandris collection of Modern Art.

They're such great quality. In love with all the stone.

Even with the crisis Greece never put out low quality materials. I really wish you guys will get out of that crisis as soon as possible, you've had enough of problems. Pity some central European countries didn't had the compassion, but hey compassion is the last thing they're known for.

Anyways, I really enjoy Greek aesthetics. No matter if new or old, spanning thru Classical, Byzantine, and modern era.

Up to a point these new buildings reflect the current tendency at the Greek capital for new developments at the hotel sector from boutique hotels like the CocoMat, where many of them are older buildings under a heavy reconstruction, to huge investments like the new Four Seasons complex at the coastline of Athens that is under development and the Grand Hyatt hotel that is going to open this summer. The other field is the cultural through a number of public projects such as the renovation and extension of the National Gallery and a significant amount of private investments from institutions such as the Goulandris Foundations that created this new museum to house its collection and of course the S. Niarchos Foundation that is responsible for the new Athenian landmark designed by Renzo Piano that became the new home for the National Opera and Library but also invests in new projects such as the new Athens General Hospital wing also designed by Piano.

At the same time there are some new interesting projects like the following where an important 19th century building at the center of the city will be fully renovated to house an office hub.

Let's see some renderings.

A new boutique Hotel located at the coastal suburb of Vouliagmeni in Athens will open at the end of the month.

http://azurhotel.gr

Quote:
Surrounded by striking pine trees, Azur is a newly constructed, modern and chic hotel which is easily accessible from the city center, airport and harbor while it’s a mere 200m away from the best beaches in Athens: namely the sandy Vouliagmeni Beach and the stunning Okeanida Beach with its crystal clear waters.

The 5 star Perianth Hotel just opened at the center of Athens.

https://www.designhotels.com/hotels/...perianth-hotel

Quote:
Situated in Agia Eirini, a lovely Byzantine-era square near many of the Greek capital’s major attractions but off the crowded tourist trail, Perianth Hotel is surprising in many ways. Designed by the country’s hottest design firm, K-Studio, the hotel is a joyful ode to Greece today. The interiors are inspired by the Athenian modern movement: think terrazzo floors, marble furniture, slim black-metal frames, and wooden surfaces. Curated artworks by contemporary Greek artists such as Yiannis Varelas, Antonakis, and Margarita Myrogianni are on proud display both in the rooms and the public spaces. The hotel's Italian eatery, Il Baretto, serves Italian elegance with swathes of marble, mirrors, and a big beautiful bar. The hotel also shares its space with the Zen Center Athens, a unique institution devoted to meditation, martial arts, yoga, and Eastern philosophy.

National Gallery of Greece Building Renovation and Expansion - On going project scheduled to open at the end of 2019.

Architects of the initial building founded at 1964: N. Moutsopoulos, Pavlos Mylonas and Dimitris Fatouros.

Architects: Architektoniki Ltd. Grammatopoulos-Panoussakis Architects and D. Vassilopoulos & Partners

http://www.g-p.gr/ENGLISH/projects%2...y-02%20en.html

Quote:
A characteristic example of the International Style, the National Gallery building was designed by the architects Professors N. Moutsopoulos, Pavlos Mylonas and Dimitris Fatouros. (The first designer withdrew later). Founded in 1964, it was inaugurated in 1976.Over the years, the need for modernization and expansion of the complex became imperative.
The project adds to the existing 9,720-m2 building another 11,040 m2, more than doubling its operational area (20,760 m2 in total). The museum acquires an additional 2,230 m2 of exhibition space, 1645 m2 more of warehouses, an auditorium seating 450, an educational venue, a reception and a 910-m2 museum shop, as well as a third-floor restaurant with panoramic views of the Acropolis and all of Athens. A second cafe will operate on the ground floor and garden.

The existing building will be strengthened with additional earthquake reinforcement. The museum will be modernized, acquiring visitor access ramps, the required elevators and stairs, disabled access.
The inspired design of the new National Gallery changes, not only its function, but also its face, adapting it to the museological and aesthetic perception of the 21st century.

Some photos I took from the construction site on Friday the 14th of September 2018.

Love it. The alphabet in the front is so iconic, a person doesn't need decoration with such letters. Those are the decoration itself, fit with every imaginable style, classic or contemporary.

Brand new boutique hotel in Athens with an amazing design!

https://www.thefoundryhotelathens.com/

Quote:

Situated in the historic neighbourhood of Psyrri, The Foundry is an Urban Boutique Luxury Hotel in Athens that fuses industrial design with exceptional, mid-century modern stylistics. Featuring 12 sensational, fully equipped apartments and a stunning rooftop Picnic Garden, The Foundry can boast a central location and magnificent Acropolis views.

The building that houses The Foundry Urban Boutique Luxury Hotel counts decades of history, originally built in 1930 and having served as a font foundry. Through the years it developed into a printing house before becoming a cultural centre with a gallery and theatre space, actively promoting the arts. Today, keeping all this history within its walls, The Foundry has been fully transformed into a place that welcomes guests, business travellers, couples and friends, who seek a sleek, urban sanctuary in the heart of modern Athens.

The Foundry exudes a hip sense of belonging, a contemporary feeling of being at home with its raw materiality and industrial approach dominating the interiors, all the while maintaining a vintage character that respects its vibrant history.Offering its guests a unique rooftop Picnic Garden on the terrace, The Foundry has created a verdant oasis of urban repose, doused in spectacular views over the city of Athens, and its most prized landmark, the Acropolis, from morning till night.

Love The Foundry Hotel few posts above. My friends will be heading to Athens for New Year's Eve, and later will stick around the area where the old Epidurus Amphitheater sits, visiting landmarks for a few days afterwards, can't wait to hear their stories once they're back!
