Β&E Goulandris Foundation - Museum of Modern Art - Opening of the new museum: 1st October 2019.

https://goulandris.gr/en/

The renovation of the square in front of the building is almost done, I took these photos yesterday by vistiting the site.

Quote:

They once hung on walls in Paris, Lausanne and Gstaad, in the homes of Greek shipping tycoon Basil Goulandris and his wife Elise. Now, the wait is almost over to see modern masterpieces by the likes of Cézanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Monet, Degas, Rodin, Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso, Miró, and Giacometti take up residence at their new Athens address.

Basil Goulandris, who started collecting contemporary art in the 1950s, founded Greece’s first Museum of Modern Art on the island Andros. By the time of his death in 1994, Goulandris had amassed one of the world’s most extraordinary private art collections, valued at $3 billion. Plans for a museum in Athens to house the collection were first announced in 1992. But the project was dogged by wrangles over ownership of the works and bureaucratic battles.

The original design by I.M. Pei had to be abandoned after preliminary excavations unearthed Aristotle’s Lyceum, now an archaeological site. Construction at the new location in Pangrati began in August 2012. It was Goulandris’ wish that the gallery be located within the cultural centre of Athens, near to the city's great antiquities and museums and easily accessible for visitors. The new museum, which has a total area of 7,250 sq.m., will also house a shop and café, art library, children's workshop, and 190-seat amphitheatre.

Its inauguration on Tuesday 1 October will be accompanied by a series of artistic events.

Acropolis Museum marks 10th anniversary with new extension

Daily lives of ancient Greeks revealed in Acropolis museum’s huge archaeological dig
Museum’s new exhibition space is an excavation site with villas, workshops and bathhouses

https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...ancient-greeks

Quote:
As the museum prepares to celebrate its 10th birthday on 20 June, it has announced the opening of a new exhibition space: an entire excavated neighbourhood of ancient villas, streets, workshops and bathhouses that lies below the museum building.

On Friday, as archaeologists put the finishing touches to the site, Dimitrios Pandermalis, the museum’s director, told how finds once considered a curse had become a blessing. “For the first time we are able to see how people lived in the shadow of the Acropolis,” he enthused, singling out an ornate ancient courtyard and a chamber where aristocrats had held symposiums.

The building of a €130m museum so close to the Acropolis, and on a site so rich in archaeology, was not without controversy. The discovery of ruins dating from the late classical era – in the fifth century BC – to the early Byzantine period in the 12th century AD delayed building work.

But the 13 years of digging paid off. One of the biggest excavations within the walls of ancient Athens helped archaeologists learn more than any previous dig had about the birthplace of democracy. “It was complex because there were so many layers, so many dwellings, one on top of the other, all telling the history of Athens,” said Stamatia Eleftheratou, who headed the excavation work.

The ancient settlement covers 4,000 square metres, accessed by steel walkways. But Eleftheratou and her team worked over an area three times that size, discovering close to 50,000 artefacts, including figurines of little-known deities. “There is an entire hidden layer, earlier ruins beneath the settlement that aren’t visible because we covered them again with earth,” she said.

The legendary Athenian hotel, a grand dame that's has been around since the Sixties and has undergone a 650 million euros overhaul is back and on its way to another glory era. Located in Vouliagmeni peninsula, some thirty minutes drive from the historical centre of the city provides two hotels, Arion and Nafsika as well as bungalows, infinity pools, some amazing beaches, a spa centre and eight restaurants among others. The hotel houses 2000 artworks by Greek and foreign artists such as sculpture by sir Antony Gormley at the entrance of Nafsika Resort.

Does the Greek environmental agency allow so much destruction of the environmental heritage and natural landscape?

The hotel dates from the 60's, planning and construction implemented with the laws of that time. The new investors received the permission to renovate the entire premises according to the current Greek - European environmental laws, there is even an ancient temple of Apollo at the area so they had also to proceed through the extremely strict and conservative archaeological department in order to finalize the renovation plan. A third building that was out of use for decades covering a huge amount of the area was demolished and will be replaced with a maximum number of 13 luxuries villas with planted rooftops leaving additional green space.

I don't see anything going against the environment in the above picture. This is one of the leading hotels of the world and one of the many that have been upgraded whilst maintaining their original design and after having significantly reduced their environment footprint.

Mole Pharmacy
Architect: Klab Architecture (Konstantinos Labrinopoulos)
Team: Veronika Vasileiou
Structural Engineer: Ypslinon ltd.
Project Managers: Future Constructions
Location: Piraeus, Greece
Area: 600m²
Photographer: Mariana Bisti

http://www.klabarchitects.com/showca...ment-pharmacy/

Quote:
klab architecture has designed mole pharmacy with a large, triangular perforated structure on its top as a reference to its location: piraeus, the largest port of greece, which connects the mainland with the islands. situated on a site formerly occupied by an old warehouse-turn-night club, the project sees the existing building completely transformed, while existing stone walls have been reinforced with a new concrete structure and a new façade has been introduced to the city.

one of the largest pharmacies in the country, klab architecture‘s mole pharmacy is designed to resemble naval formal language on both its exterior and interior façades. inside, a series of mezzanines connected to each other in different ways divide the large, open volume of the former warehouse, while a curved ramp creates a dynamic line and connects the store’s two levels. a meeting room and office, as well as storage and a unique multi-purpose space used for parties, yoga lessons, seminars, or even theatrical plays, are located on the upper levels, while the ground floor is reserved for the retail area and a small lab.

That Mole Pharmacy is the coolest modern infill building ever!

On a side note, is there any news about upgrading Lykabettus Hill into a park, or at least renovating the decaying concert arena there?

So many cutting edge projects, great to see such an exuberant revival of Athens with the Renzo Piano designed Stavros Niarchos Centre at the centre. Can't wait to visit in the next week.

They use their bioclimatic design and some eco technologies like geothermal energy, solar panel and rain water collecting systems in order to save energy. The architecture of the block is inspired from Japanese traditional architecture like the ‘’pagoda’’ and traditional Japanese ponds and vegetation. The design transforms the apartment block into an abstract contemporary sculpture.

The recently completed Coco -mat Athens BC Hotel has some impressive interiors while ancient ruins are preserved and exhibited under glass floors. Of course the view from the rooftop is striking.

Architectural study: Elastic Architects

Description:

Acropolis itself, have guided the architecture of the building. Highlighted by a bold frame, the balconies in the main façade reach out towards the Museum, maximizing the visual experience.
Within the frame nests a contemporary interpretation of the grid, using timber for contrast. The combination draws inspiration from the Greek hospitality architecture of the 60’s and 70’s.The main elevation allows permeability between the interior of the building and the urban space, in contrast to the introvert approach of the Syggrou Avenue elevation, were the back of house are situated.
The building expands into three clusters of guest rooms, in three separate levels, allowing a view to the archaeological findings situated within the site. The exposure initiates a dialogue with the urban environment, creating a new contemporary and easily accessible public space.

This project involved the usage change of an existing building in Piraeus, from its former use (as the Papastratos tobacco factory lithography building) into a state-of-the-art office building.

The contracted works included reinforcement of the bearing structure, architectural works for the office and public space areas configuration, installation of E&M networks and equipment, as well as the surrounding area landscaping and configuration.

The building covers a total plan area of approximately 14,000 square meters, including a basement, a ground floor, 6 floors and a loft. The basement contains the majority of E&M installations (power generators, UPS, data rooms, firefighting etc.), staff training rooms and a fully equipped kitchen for the almost 2,000 staff in the building. On the ground floor, public areas and dining areas are located, whereas all the upper floors are office spaces.

Despite its demanding nature and timeline, our company was able to deliver the project two months ahead of its contractual nine-month deadline.
