Wonderful!! This is exactly what Korea needs to enliven its motorsports industry. The F1 in...not even Mokpo, but Yeongam...was destined for failure, and the bar for entry into the sport is way too high for any of Korea's automakers, even Hyundai.

This Formula E will go on all of Korea's strengths--batteries, electric motors/vehicles, Seoul--and has a much, much lower cost of entry.

Toegye-ro road diet

Seoul City has announced yesterday that it will reduce the number of lanes on Toegye-ro, one of downtown Seoul's main East-West arteries South of Myeongdong.

Toegye-ro currently has between 6 and 8 lanes, depending on sections, and 2 lanes will be removed to reduce the number of lanes to between 4 and 6.

With the reclaimed space, the sideways will be widened by 2.5 meters, and dedicated cycling lanes will be created.

This is part of the greater road diet project, and this particular section is expected to be completed by May 2020, at a cost of around USD 9M.

National Theater of Korea - Haeoreum Grand Theater Remodelling

The National Theater of Korea is currently undergoing a major remodeling, which is scheduled to be completed in 2020, to mark the 70 years of the opening of the National Theater of Korea. Construction is already underway, as can be shown on the satellite pictures from Google Earth.

Completion of Heungbokjeon in Gyeongbokgung Palace

The Heungbokjeon hall of Gyeongbokgung Palace, which was initially built in 1867 to welcome foreign dignitaries and destroyed in 1917, has finally been re-built after 4 years of work. It is of course part of the greater series of restoration works at Gyeongbokbung and other royal palaces (especially Deoksugung as well as Changgyeonggung recently). Needless to say, the restoration has been going on for decades now, and will last for much longer. Right now, they are also reinstalling the Hyangwongyo bridge in the pond at the back of Gyeongbokgung to its original location, and the Gwanghwamun project will also be part of the restoration of the site.

Right now though, I don't know which Gyeongbokgung building will get rebuilt next, as it seems that there is always one in the works.

As for this restoration (which was marred a few months ago by concerns of use by contractors of methods which didn't respect the original construction methods or materials), most of the works were completed in late 2018, and today marks the opening to the public of the site. As for the inside of the building, it will only be opened to the public in 2020, and will include interactive presentations, as well as... drum roll... modern toilets. So this is another case of the construction deviating from the original construction by adding elements for visitors, after the Sojubang which opened a couple of years ago and which has functioning kitchens (this was originally a kitchen). I don't actually mind it to much. Some people might say it's some kind of Disneyfication, but so far it's been done in a smart and respectful way. It's also important to remember that Seoul already has Changdeokgung, which is in good condition and on the UNESCO World Heritage List, so they can afford to be slightly less authentic with Gyeongbokgung.

In any case, I hope construction will pick up pace soon. Right now, the goal is that the palace be rebuilt at 41% of its original scope by 2045... so this is definitely a long term vision.

Hanwha HQ remodeling

Looks like the cladding is almost done and they're now doing a fountain plaza thing on the sidewalk in front of the building. While the original building had a decent design and I wished this was an entirely new building in another plot, it blends well together with the surrounding architecture and I think it would be a fine addition to the downtown skyline.

Cycle Rapid Transit announcement

Mayor Park Won-Soon as today announced the development of the Cycle Rapid Transit (CRT) project, with the goal of improving the use of cycling instead of driving.

To be honest, this is a continuation of previous announcements over different names to help develop the cycling infrastructure in Korea. Of course, Ddareungi has already been a big success, and now has over 1500 stations (with the goal of reaching over 2000 by next year), and there have been some additional bike lanes created (such as on Jongro), although the percentage of roads with bike lanes is still fairly low.

One of the proposed changes is for the traffic code for the construction of new roads to prioritize bike lanes and sidewalks over car lanes, unlike right now.

But the most important change is the intent to create a "bike highway", with long sections of uninterrupted bike lanes, fully separated from car traffic. This is right now quite lacking in Seoul, as while there are quite a few bike lanes, apart from parks or the Hangang river, the bike lanes are often not fully separated from car traffic, or a cut short at some intersections for example.

The goal is therefore to build by 2022 around 70 kilometers of such "bike highways" or CRT, starting in 2019 with the Hangang Avenue in Yongsan (4.2km) and the Banpo Avenue in Seocho, to be followed by Mapo Avenue and Teheran Street. Some bike lanes would be installed the traditional way (instead of sideways), but there will be sections where bike lanes will be built on canopies, on green carpets or in "tubes". See images below

Overall, the city will also increase the total mileage of bike lanes from 603 to 753km by 2022.

There will also be some initiatives to build bike lanes or tubes on bridges over the Hangang: Gayang Bridge, Wonhyo Bridge and Yeongdong Bridge.

The mayor has also announced that it will create "no-car zones" in Itaewon and Namdaemun.

At this point, this announcement is a mix of different projects, and is not entirely clear. Some of the announcements are more of a vision, and some may be irrealistic, and even populistic. Overall, though, it's probably a good thing to see bikes included in the city's plans even more, and to turn them into an actual mode of transportation rather than just a novelty. At this point, it's too early to say much more. This needs to be addressed in a pragmatic way: how is each new individual section of proposed bike lane, what about its benefits and its costs, its impact on the environment, its effect on traffic...

Seoul Mayor Announces Vision for ‘Bicycle Highways’

The mayor of Seoul unveiled a plan Sunday to build bicycle-only roads throughout the South Korean capital city.

Mayor Park Won-soon declared his vision for the so-called Cycle Rapid Transit (CRT) for Seoul during his visit to Bogota, the capital of Colombia, which boasts one of the world’s most extensive networks of car-free roads packed with cyclists.

Park named his vision for an urban network of bicycle-only main roads named CRT after the existing Bus Rapid Transit, a high-quality bus-based transit system.

Park, who left Seoul last Monday for a 10-day trip to Mexico and Colombia, said he drew inspiration for CRT from Bogota’s “ciclovia” touted as one of the world’s most successful permanent bike paths.

“I’ll create a people-centered bike revolution by building bicycle highways throughout Seoul,” Park told reporters during a tour of ciclovia.

“The existing bike paths are an unstable space that adjoins car roadways. But the CRT will be physically separated from cars and pedestrians. It’s a space exclusively dedicated to bikes,” the mayor said.

Noting bike-only roads now exist from east to west along the Han River parks, Park said he will build north-south CRT networks to ensure smoother flows of bicycle traffic.

He said CRT networks will be built above bus-only lanes or along Han River bridges or other existing urban facilities in tubes or other forms.

The existing bike-only lanes on major car roadways will be elevated to the level of sidewalks.

Park’s government will also build 72 kilometers of bike-only roads in new urban development districts, like Magok, Wirye and Godeok-Gangil.

“Bicycle-centered and human-centered traffic is a big vision and movement across the world,” the mayor said. “We don’t have to hesitate, as the definition of human-oriented roads has been made clear.”

Home town Shin ansan New subway confirm and prepare U/C begin

Dig deep 70m below from surface.
For the first time, Only high speed elevator(accommodation 40 people per a box 6~12 unit will installed each entrance) are going to carry people into subway platform without stairway.

about 2~3minute take between each individual station.
for example from my home to Parc1 of Yeouido(OVER 333M HEIGH)
Now 1~1 half hour take by bus.(there are no direct subway)
But when subway completed then 9minute take from my home town(yes I need another 5~7 minute arrived in station:시흥사거리역)
So this subway very innovation for south western seoulites.

Station confirm like above called 독산사거리역(sub entrance)

Station entrance confirm 독산사거리역(main entrance)

I still don't see how it's possible that jeonse is affordable for most Koreans. Most Americans don't have 160k saved up, nor the ability to over anything but many decades of time. Certainly, the low monthly lease/purchase cost is nice, but it's such a massive upfront cost that it seems like it must stifle the housing market at least somewhat.

U right
USA much more wealthier country than SK. and many korea still poor.
as far as I know Half population of koreans has not $100 thousands USD wealth
jeonsae system is very unique real estate phenomenon in Sk.
relatively Due to big deposit system Seoul's lease fee very cheap compare with other major cities like toronto/sydeny/london/tokyo.
but when buying house price not really cheap.
But still seoul's house price cheap compare with other major cities.

Jayang-dong Redevelopment

Recent updates regarding a major project in Seoul which I believe I have not talked about.

There is a major redevelopment project in Jayang-dong (Gwangjin-gu) in East Seoul. The current lot is occupied by KT, the post office and other public buildings, which are now being demolished. They will be replaced by this major mixed-use project (see picture below), which will top at 48 floors, and is scheduled to be completed in August 2023. Over 1000 housing units will be supplied in this project.

The recent announcement is the selection by KT Estate (who is developing this project) of Samoo CM as the architectural firm in charge of the project, and will be followed in August by the selection of a contractor for the construction.

I will keep you posted and soon create a thread dedicated to this project.

More updated, as Hanjin Heavy Industries as now officially sold the lot to the Shinsegae-KT&G consortium. Everything is being finalized, but the price will be around KRW 400 billion (near USD 400 million), which should pave the way for the redevelopment of the terminal.

While back in 2017, Seoul City proposed plans for 2 32-floor towers, the new owners are apparently currently discussing with the city for a 3-tower redevelopment topping at up to 45 floors. This could turn out to be a significant addition to the Seoul skyline.

https://news.naver.com/main/read.nhn...aid=0004240879

According to latest news report, Hanjin Heavy Industries has signed a Joint-Venture agreement with Shinsegae Property for this project.

Also, apparently, the winning project selected from an architectural competition is this one:

There are still many unknowns about this project and steps ahead of us, but once this is all confirmed, I'll create a dedicated thread.
