The city of Milan and the ski resort of Cortina d'Ampezzo have been announced as the hosts of the 2026 Winter Olympics. The International Olympic Committee voted for Italy's bid ahead of Stockholm-Are, Sweden, to stage the event. With such result, Italy has made history: no country has ever won two Winter (or Summer) Olympic bid elections against at least one other nation in a 20-year span and held the Winter (or Summer) Games twice in that stretch. The last time that Italy hosted the Games was in 2006, in Turin.

Milan 47 - 34 Stockholm

There were only two candidates left after other bidders - Sion (Switzerland), Sapporo (Japan), Graz (Austria), Calgary (Canada), Erzerum (Turkey) - had earlier dropped out of the race with concerns over the event's size and cost.

VP22
Milan | Zone 2

design | Tectoo
site area | 2,168 sqm
client | A.M. Holdings

The project is located in a contest characterized by its strong urban planning and architectural elements. These characters play a fundamental role in guiding the project through its development given the high sensitivity on the planning aspects.

The volume, considering the site limits, has been designed to maximize the gross surface currently on site while respecting the alignment with the adjacent buildings, the facade line, the level of the arcade confirming the proportions and the rhythm of the columns representative of the vertical character of the whole boulevard.

The office development is characterized by the presence of an additional volume above the big terrace at level 8, where the most representative offices are located, fully transparent with a 360°-degree view on Milan's skyline. The main volume of the building is constructed by a pre-assembled modular curtain wall system characterized by extruded white ceramic elements with an additional layer of shading devices. These elements called ''ceramic trees'' have been designed as custom design ceramic shapes added to the facade. The study of the façade was developed through solar studies to understand the lighting condition of the internal environment testing the solar path around the building through the seasons. For this reason, these ''ceramic trees'' have been customized identifying four different typologies according to their orientation creating a different perception of the facades.

In order to produce a solution in line with the highest standards of energy efficiency achieving a LEED Platinum certification we are aiming to guarantee the highest results in terms of building envelope performances as well as the highest efficiency for the MEP. Leading-edge structural solutions enabling building speed on site and an important presence of the green in the courtyard as well as within the building towards the roof, are completing the overall architecture look.

The ground level with the double high lobby is characterized by the transparency of the public spaces opening views from the boulevard and the arcade towards the internal courtyard.

AC Milan and FC Inter submit preliminary masterplan to build new sporting and entertainment district.

FC Inter Milan and AC Milan, the Milanese football teams playing in Serie A League, presented the preliminary masterplan for their new stadium at San Siro district. It's a 1.2 billion euros plan (700 million for the stadium only) involving private investment to build a new modern sports and entertainment destination in the same area where the current Giuseppe Meazza Stadium is.

The investments will be supported by AC Milan and FC Internazionale, following the granting of a 90-year surface right, to be assigned by public tender launched by the Municipality of Milan, for which the two clubs, as proponents, will have a right of first refusal.

The new world-class stadium will have a capacity of 60,000-65,000 seats (12,000 for the VIPs area only) and shopping/dining/leisure/entertainment buildings, which represent a gathering place able to welcome citizens, fans and tourists 365 days a year, giving employment to over 3,500 people. The project would include offices, hotel, congress center and other services.

An architectural competition will be launched to find the best design for the new stadium.

The entire project will take three years to be completed, according to Inter and Milan, with the chance to host the Opening Ceremony of the 2026 Olympic Winter Games.

The realization of the new stadium involves two distinct phases.

PHASE I (work in the West area):
- execution of the excavations and construction of the new stadium;
- removal of the Patroclo Underpass, which will be rebuilt, extending its width and connected to the internal viability of the compartment;
- construction of west buildings.

PHASE II (work in the East area):
- demolition of the G. Meazza stadium;
- excavations and construction of complementary buildings.

It's good news to hear Milan and Inter planning to build new modern state of the art stadium but ... is it necessary to demolish the current San Siro Giuseppe Meazza stadium?

Even compared to other European cities that have been building skyscrapers in the last decades, Milan just sticks out.
Is it the quality of the glass? It appears so smooth when you see it.
Is it the ever present Italian aspiration for aesthetics giving the last touch while choosing the right materials, regardless of the style that's considered a contemporary fact?
Whichever the case, I'm eternally in love with this city, so happy for the new developments.

Milan and Turin could be connected by the "Hyperloop" super-fast trains.
sources: repubblica.it | ilsole24ore.it | milanotoday.it

The Italian government and private investors have expressed interest over the "Hyperloop", which is super-fast train enclosed in vacuum tube to avoid friction and that floats a couple of centimetres above the ground thanks to an electromagnetic field. The developers say it will reach speeds of up to 1,223 km/h. Building the infrastructure would cost around €20 million per kilometre -- slightly more than a conventional railway.

Elon Musk is developing it at his company, but there are also numerous other companies and universities researching the technology including a company called Hyperloop Transportation Technologies. "By the end of 2019, together with the interested regions , we'll announce two feasibility projects for a new transport system in Italy" said Bibop Gresta, an Italian born in Terni, Chairman and co-founder of Hyperloop Trasportation Technologies. "At the moment, I cannot give details on the routes, but these are two very interesting corridors".

The feasibility studies, indeed, are at an advanced stage: the company has confirmed that it has started negotiations with representatives of the Italian government for the construction of two links of about 150 km each. In the meanwhile, the Mayor of Milan Beppe Sala and the Mayor of Turin Chiara Appendino met to talk about the issue and shared the same vision. If the experiment will be successful, it could be replicated elsewhere in the country.

CAP Group Headquarters
Milan | Zone 6

design | Claudio Lucchin & Architetti Associati
height | 27.4 meters
client | Gruppo CAP

A new headquarters for CAP Group, a public corporation owned by the local authorities that leads water service in the municipalities of Milan metro area. The building is expected to be built on the same site of CAP Group's offices.

The access area is embellished by the presence of water: a large pool accompanies the visitors inside the new building. In this new urban void emerges this large volume that floats on water: a sort of modern "ark". The ark is "home" but also "vessel". A "vessel" able to survive the cataclysms to be eternally rediscovered by humanity, and which contains in itself the knowledge and evolutionary potential of humanity towards the awareness that in order to continue living on Earth, we must protect it, take care of it and safeguard its resources.

The building has a solid and compact shape, but in continuous movement, given the continuous change of perspective. This follows the concepts of stability and union of the CAP Group but, at the same time, declares that the group is dynamic, due to an intrinsic need for technical updating and improvement of customer service.

Linate will stop but Milan will carry on flying: the "city airport" prepares for the makeover.

As the start of Milan's Linate airport three-month closure --27 July to 27 October-- approaches, Malpensa and Orio al Serio airports are bracing for a huge increase in passenger throughput. This will be the third total overhaul of Linate airport, following previous closures in 1982 and 2002. In 2018, the city inaugurated the new facade at Linate, but now a further step is required.

The single runway and the taxiways will be renewed. The departure terminal will be totally rebuilt, including the baggage handling system, and the shopping and restaurant areas will be considerably enlarged. The work will also improve quality and safety levels of the airport.

In the meanwhile, a new business aviation terminal called "Milano Prime" has opened at Malpensa. The terminal, which was built by Italian architectural firm One Works, joins the Prime facility at Linate Airport, which together are considered the first business and general aviation airport in Italy.

The new terminal will be open 24/7 and cover an area of 1,400 square metres, with a 50,000 square metre yard and a 5,000 square metre hangar, while also accommodating five lounges within the polyhedral shape of the building. In a statement, Milano Malpensa said this would allow it to accommodate business and general aviation traffic anticipated during the autumn, a period which sees important fashion and sports events come to the city.

Four international architecture firms for the new Milan-Inter stadium.
repubblica.it | tuttosport.it | corriere.it

The two Milanese football clubs, FC Inter Milan and AC Milan, hope to earn twice as much from naming rights with their new stadium than other European clubs are getting. Tuttosport newspaper this morning explained why the clubs' joint ground represents a more attractive proposition to prospective sponsors. The new stadium would be home to two clubs competing on three fronts, meaning it could host up to 50 matches per season. This would guarantee increased visibility for any company putting their name to the ground, forcing them to offer more money if they wanted the honour.

Inter and Milan submitted a Technical and Economic Feasibility Study to the City Council two weeks ago. The stadium they have in mind would have 63,000 seats and a more "closed" structure, ensuring less noise pollution for local residents. The clubs also hope to develop the surrounding area by building a new multi-functional entertainment district. The total investment should amount to 1.2 billion euros.

In the meanwhile, AC Milan and FC Inter Milan have sent invitation letters to four international architecture firms for the designing of the new stadium, according to La Repubblica newspaper. The architecture firms that are competing would be: Populous, the U.S. based studio that has designed 1,325 stadiums in 34 countries; Italian architect Stefano Boeri, father of Milan's Vertical Forest; American architect David Manica; and the Italian group of Progetto CMR. But according to Il Corriere della Sera, however, David Manica would not be in the list: the fourth design studio seem to be HOK.

Updates "Milomat" plan

The plan was presented in January and it has now started. Unaesthetic barriers will be gradually replaced with the "Milomat" in order to prevent terrorist attacks in the most crowded pedestrian areas of the city. "Following the terrorist attacks in major European cities, we have started to work on this project" had announced Urban Planning Councillor, Pierfrancesco Maran. "The Milomat is a pilomat and is produced with materials from our territory. Hundreds of these elements will be placed in strategic areas; some would also allow the passange of emergency and police vehicles". The Municipality has said it will introduce further solutions concerning the urban decor, in order to grant public safety.

The first Milomats have been installed in via San Pietro all'Orto, nearby Corso Vittorio Emanuele (one of the main shopping pedestrian streets).
