Not SJ development news, but an interesting take on the failed optics of new development and how to get voters on board: https://shelterforce.org/2019/02/19/...-for-building/

A) that doesn't even make sense. A crowded region is *exactly* what VTA needs for PT to succeed.

B) VTA has to start where demand already exists; this is the fundamental theory behind the new network, which focuses more resources on frequency along fewer routes rather than service coverage over a broad area. Only then should it move outward to serve lower-intensity areas, and only in sync with changes to higher-intensity land use policies.

County way too broad: crowded in many spots that are far from each other for transit to work. Crowd pattern in county way to spread out and transit would just take too long. So crowded in north county with lots of congestion in southern part of San Jose. Just too difficult for transit system to work. Some light density is in the middle of the urban areas, too. It's too much of a hodgepodge of dense and none dense urban areas in the county.

Oddly, you are both right. Transit is a trailing investment only good for areas that are already showing dense growth. And the Peninsula south of, say, SFO is dense in spots and sparse in spots over a very long distance.

The result is that heavy rail to connect distant nodes makes some sense and light rail makes little sense anywhere.

This idea is finally getting to goofy urbanists who view, say, NY and some large southern or western city as being equally desirable places for rail transit. Maybe some day, when they reach the density of, say, LA's downtown to the ocean, but for now it's too long and too slow.

I've been taking it more recently, and I prefer it to buses 100% of the time, as long as the route works

Don't expect anyone except lycra-clad enthusiasts to bike from BART when it opens. The city really failed by not getting this trail connection built already.
Mabury/Taylor over 101 needs to be rebuilt (it's been a plan for decades) but worked again to be very pro-bicycle and ped, with the existence of the BART station.

Here's an 11 year old document on the plans for 101 intersection/overcrossings:
https://www.vta.org/sites/default/fi...ementation.pdf

And here's a plan for that trail...stagnant at the moment, unless anyone's heard different:
https://fivewoundstrail.org/trailmap/

Adding a bike crossing over the unused 101 rail bridge would be awesome, in my mind. Would bring a lot of bikers as they'd have a bike-only bridge - so much safer than all those cars and on-ramps/off-ramps.

I believe you put a sandwich board at the paseo at San Pedro St. and people will know there's a business down there (big arrow on it). Just don't lock it to a bike rack!

I saw that the city recently issued an RFP for the design phase for Mabury/101 project. However, it looks like there is still an issue with it being too close to existing 101 interchanges for Caltrans. Anyone know the latest?

I think the trail north of Mabury will be built as part of the Bumb / Flea market development so maybe they are waiting for that before working on the rest.

In any case something needs to be done on Mabury before BART opens. The current configuration is lethal for bicyclists.

New transit service by VTA is an instant failure. Get ready for a flock of motorists on the highways in the coming days. https://www.sanjoseinside.com/2020/0...-service-cuts/

Every time there is a positive story about Silicon Valley located in San Jose Ca. San Jose is never mentioned. Its like a secret conspiracy, very bizarre as a result even though San Jose is the 10th largest city in America and has more hi-tech headquarters that any US city it remains a enigma to most.

Admittedly this is especially true for Fortune 500 companies, all 8 Fortune 500 companies in San Jose are tech companies. The only one that might be a question of field is Paypal which one might argue is a financial services company. The rest are all tech companies.

this is maddening and has gone on long enough. why hasn't someone in the city's economic development department taken on the cause to correct these injustices yet? it would be a full time position that would undoubtedly be worth its weight in gold for the city's image.

“We are excited to report that our sister concept, Morton’s The Steakhouse, will be relocating to the McCormick & Schmick’s restaurant space inside The Fairmont in San Jose, located at 170 S. Market St., and will open in early February," Tim Whitlock, senior vice president of operations and chief operating officer of the Houston-based Morton's steakhouse chain, said in a Wednesday evening email statement to the Business Journal.“The Morton’s will be open for both lunch and dinner at the new space and the vast majority of our McCormick & Schmick’s employees will have the opportunity to transition to Morton’s.”

The McCormick & Schmick's location on the ground floor of the Fairmont annex — on the opposite side of the CityView complex from Plaza de Cesar Chavez — opened in January 2004. It's unclear as to whether it will close permanently as a result of Morton's relocation or if it will relocate to a new restaurant space.

Bill.com Holdings Inc., which had the second best Bay Area tech IPO of 2019, is moving its headquarters this spring to San Jose from Palo Alto.

The payment processing software business said in a regulatory filing this week that it has signed an 11-year lease for nearly 132,000 square feet of space at 6220 America Center Drive, a complex in Alviso where Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. is also headquartered since last year.
Quote:
Bill.com sold more shares than expected last month in the last Bay Area IPO of 2019. Its stock soared on the New York Stock Exchange and is now trading more than 70 percent above its IPO price.

That was topped among last year's new tech stocks from the region only by San Jose-based Zoom Video Communications Inc., whose stock closed Wednesday at about double its IPO price from last April.
