Shalom Meir is very much an iconic tower for what it represents

It all depends on the city's architecture in general and its culture.
It is only natural that in London (just like with Jerusalem) it is a building that represents city's history.
And it is only natural that for NY it is one of the skyscrapers (preferably the tallest).
I would argue that it is certainly Freedom tower and not ESB.
I am not sure what it is for Tel Aviv, as its architecture is not as established as that of New York's, London's or of Jerusalem.
One would say that for Tel Aviv it used to be the White City, but in light of the development of the last two decades, skyscrapers seem to be taking over the definition of the city's architecture (like that of New York).
It will also depend on other factors though.
Things like public accessibility, location, history of construction and of course the marketing campaign.
I think Spiral (or ToHA phase 2) could become the city's icon, but alot of things need to happen for to happen.
Just construction, certainly won't be enough.

The Chrysler Building doesn't dominate New York's skyline anymore, but will always be an icon and an instant reminder of NYC's skyline/past/architecture/identity. Azrieli not quite to that level, but yes, even when they are dwarfed by other buildings, they will still be iconic.

Half of the site has been excavated to 3 floors below ground level*.

The other half has so far excavated to one floor below ground level. There's still lot of derbit (slurry wall & foundations) from the old Yedioth house; it had two basement floors, if memory served.

*Sidenote: in order to cast slurry walls they aren't using the typical slurry wall grabbers but hydromill trench cutter, the latest drilling mate technology to date.

Thanks for linking this, Felix. Btw, fun to read - These folks are real pros, what a rarity in Israel, unfortunately.

The Petah Tikva project looks cool, I wonder if it's their lot behind the "big" park (Basel St.) or somewhere else.

It also looks kind of weird
I guess, this is all very preliminary, as they are looking into asking for additional building rights.

Also another interesting bit in this report (slightly offtopic).
The Sarona tower mall progress (which has been sluggish to put it mildly).
I will quote:
"The construction of the mall at the base of the office tower is scheduled to be
completed in 2019. An Occupancy Form for part of the western wing of the mall, was received in January 2019."

There appears to already be a competition for designing it, Kimmel Eshkolot posted some of their renders of what it could be on instagram.
