Art Deco/Art Moderne

Style Definition
Art Deco and Art Moderne are two ends of a continuum, forming a style with roots in the verticality of Gothic architecture but leaning toward the simplicity of modernism. As its name implies, Art Deco uses more decoration while Art Moderne buildings tend to have smoother, streamlined shapes.

Both Deco and Moderne use setbacks to reduce building mass and to emphasize verticality. Unlike "Wedding Cake" buildings, their shapes recede from the street gracefully, not in tiers but in gentler and more carefully positioned steps. Limestone is the most common cladding material, with brick facades common in Art Deco.
