Thanks Dr P. Most of that is wretched, I don't think anyone would miss it.

Shelton Square is truly ghastly. I hope they get rid of that awful row of shops on Herford Street with the metal canopy bolted to the weird 'fake wood' stuff (The game shop, Anne Summers, etc.)

I think the risk with this plan is that they demolish all this stuff and then replace it with a whole series of buildings that look the same and end up dating quickly. I'd hope they'd make some sort of attempt to make Herford Street look a bit like it did before they demolished it all.

I hope it isn't all going to be two storeys high as well.

About time too. Hertford Street is ghastly.

Yep, now the Burges has had a spruce up I think Hertford Street it is the worst part of the city centre.

If the market hadn't have been listed, how different does everyone think the scheme would have been?

Without the listing they could have tried a different layout, although whether they would be that radical given the cost of that is another matter.

IMHO, the Only tood thing about the Jerde disney plan was the way they rejigged the precinct layout and created more of an urban grid. This relied on the market going. This new plan is just a slight rejig... And keeps the same poor layout.

Looking ahead to when (or if!) the redevelopment of the north side happens, do you think we'll see the tower block next to West Orchards coming down? I do realise that it's a residential building and things are perhaps a little more complicated compared to Coventry Point, but who knows? Also, will we see any extending/modification to West Orchards itself? Something else I believe was mooted some time ago when the centre had different owners.

For sure, the buildings opposite the shopping centre will most likely go, perhaps opening up views towards the Belgrade, and whatever happens to the old Telegraph building.

I reckon they will open up the view of the Belgrade, that would fit in with the theme they have gone for with the southern section.

I loved the original Jerde plans for where the fountain is now, but they reckon it will take the attention away from Broadgate as a focal point.

This is what the the square looks like from the other side. The old Post Office will be kept as will the bank to the left.

This is the back past the car park. Most of the crap looking buildings will be going.

I think they should reconstruct Herford Street so it's similar to how it was in the 1960s, before they demolished it all. They seem to be getting rid of all those office buildings, as well...

Seeing that picture of the old post office I was wondering about the Georgian-looking Natwest bank just up from there - do you think people like it for the whole building or the two entrances with classical style pillars?

I don't think people would be that bothered about that building without them, so if a plan included the reuse of those two 'arches' within it whether it'd be allowed to be demolished?

It's an OK plan, but I find it somewhat lacking something. I just read it and though, yeah, it's okay, but it's really the same old shit just slightly rejigged.

It does look much nicer though, and most people seem to consider looks more important than substance when debunking a city.

Are those tower blocks to be demolished or are they just hidden by the angle?

One tower block will be demolished (Coventry Point), which is a bit of an eyesore, but is apparently filled with businesses.

Lookswise who knows? The planning application is just outline, so we won't know what it'll look. I hope they try to actually make it fit in with the surrounding streets a bit more, especially around Herford Street, which has some brick/stone pre-war building lines broken by sudden concrete crap.

The best part is that it gets rid of some of the worse parts of the precinct.

It looks as if Iceland want to remain in the same spot:

It's quite disappointing that the CCC official gave a verbal commitment. Allowing large retailers to call the shots has ruined the last couple of major developments in Coventry.

Yes, I agree. The more I look at this development, the more unimpressed I am by it. It looks like something thrown together during a lunchbreak. The sections showing people flow are cloud cuckoo land. People don't flow like that around Coventry as it is now. So why would they suddenly start to move like that?

To be fair on Iceland, though, the plans for the large apartment blocks on the spot _would_ have seen Iceland relocate to a new unit in the ground floor of the blocks.
