When taking these photos I hadn't realised just how knackered this building is.

It was knackered when I was based in it as an undergraduate during 1989-1992!

Demolition is bit complex work. Hope they are also using Strip out process to save the cost.

I can only assume this is a temporary thing as that's a LOT of land just to have public space. It's not even on a particularly well-used node.

Yes, the intention is for the site to be redeveloped, I think the target was for after 2021 (?).

I think it looks seriously impressive, its just it would be an odd place for permanent public space and very quiet outside of uni term times! The setback to the student union building is odd, but for City of Culture will be a great temporary space.

When redeveloped I hope they don't follow the same footprint, it would be good to improve permeability through the campus. I think the intention for the current uni 'HQ' fronting onto Cathedral Square is for it to be demolished, and turn the area into a green space. Good move as the uni needs a 'heart'.

I think the buildings the opposite side are being redeveloped as well? Possibly a candidate for road re-alignment and combining the two sites as part of a larger scheme? The building opposite this site has alot of space.

That's a brilliant but simple way of improving the local area - love that little copulet building on the corner which bookends it nicely.

Really like that new render as it shows the value of opening up the space to improve the connection from the street into the 'heart' of the uni campus. When the site is redeveloped I presume they will preserve that key view as well by dividing the site into two plots.
