It's incredible that a thread about European cathedrals has almost no pictures of the land of cathedrals, i.e. France. By far the most populated European country till the 19th century, the largest kingdom of Christendom in the Middle Ages, it is no wonder France has the most cathedrals of any other European country, not to mention that the gothic style originated in France, and that France has some of the oldest and most impressive gothic cathedrals of Europe.
In 2007 there are 104 cathedrals in activity in France. Add to these about 80 cathedrals that were demoted to the rank of parish church at the time of the French Revolution (1789). These demoted cathedrals are not cathedrals anymore, but the buildings still exist and they are often called "cathedral" by local people. In total thus there are 186 cathedrals in France (176 in metropolitan France and 10 in overseas France). I'll make a full list of the French cathedrals, going region by region, in alphabetical order. I'll put the dates of construction for each cathedral. For the cathedrals demoted at the time of the French Revolution or after I'll put "demoted" in parenthesis.
