Gilas sweeps through the first round of Super Kung Sheung Cup

The Philippine national team swept through the first round of the Super Kung Sheung Cup, blowing out Malaysia 119-46, Thursday at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium in Hong Kong.

Gilas had previously beaten Indonesia in the tournament opener, 110-78, and the host team Hong Kong 85-58. This one though, was their largest margin of victory yet.

The win was punctuated by a vicious 32-4 fourth quarter, with Gilas romping away with this win.

Not a single player from Malaysia scored in double-figures, with Gan Hong Hoong producing a team-best eight.

Greg Slaughter, making up for missing the previous game against Hong Kong due to illness, top-scored with 27 points on 12-of-14 shooting.

Gunners Kevin Alas and RR Garcia added 18 each, while KG Canaleta continued to wax hot with 14 markers.

The team takes a break on Friday, before the quarterfinals begin on Saturday. - AMD, GMA News

Gilas 119 - Slaughter 27, Alas 18, Garcia 18, Melton 14, Canaleta 14, J. Pascual 11, David 5, Ganuelas 4, Lanete 4, R. Pascual 4, Douthit 0

Quarter-scoring: 24-10, 55-24, 87-42, 119-46

PBA board OKs lending at least one player per team for SMART-Gilas in FIBA Asia
InterAKTV · Thursday, January 24, 2013 · 8:24 pm

The PBA Board of Governors on Thursday approved the proposal of commissioner Chito Salud to lend at least one player per team for the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national squad that will compete in the FIBA Asia Championship in Manila in August.

“Lending one player per team is in the spirit of broad and equitable representation,” said Salud after the meeting at the league’s office in Quezon City. The commissioner clarified that the final selection of the composition of the team will still depend on SMART-Gilas coach Chot Reyes.

“If there are teams willing to lend more than one player, it’s okay with me. If in the judgment of the coach, he does not need any more players from the teams, then so be it.”

Salud said he will meet Reyes next week to discuss the composition of the squad. SMART-Gilas is currently competing in Hong Kong.

Prior to this new move, Reyes had submitted a list of 20 PBA players to form the national pool.

Teams like Talk ‘N Text and Meralco, which like SMART-Gilas is bankrolled by telecommunications mogul Manuel V. Pangilinan, as well as Rain or Shine, has expressed its willingness to lend more than one player for the national team, if necessary.

(InterAKTV is part of InterAksyon.com, the news website of TV5, which is chaired by Pangilinan.)

Salud said he will also discuss with Reyes details about scheduling practice sessions for the national team.

PBA board gives Chot free hand, asks him to name final 12

By Nelson Beltran (philstar.com) | Updated January 24, 2013 - 6:29pm

Quote:
MANILA, Philippines – The PBA board of governors approved in a meeting today the proposal to give national coach Chot Reyes flexibility to revise the composition of his pool in the hope of forming the best and most competitive team for the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship set Aug. 1-11 at the MOA Arena in Pasay.

The league honchos also agreed to further shorten the season-ending Governors Cup to give the national team time to focus on training for the Asian joust where the top three qualify for the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain.

“My proposal is one player per team in the spirit of broad and equitable representation. An addendum is if a team is willing to lend one or more players, go ahead. And if in the judgment of the coach he doesn’t need player from any team, so be it,” said PBA commissioner Chito Salud.

“We’re letting him revise the team if there’s the need. It’s his call,” Salud added.

With these parameters set, the board will call on Reyes, however, to name his final 12 plus two reserves right away so they can soon start training earnestly.

The league commissioner discusses these things with Reyes upon Gilas Pilipinas’ return from Hong Kong where they’re competing in an invitational tourney right now.
Sportshub ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1

Reyes is expected to keep the core of his triumphant Jones Cup team and tap Marc Pingris, Kelly Williams, Jayson Castro and either Arwind Santos or Junmar Fajardo to fill in vacant spots.

PBA players in the Jones Cup roster were LA Tenorio, Gary David, Ranidel de Ocampo, Larry Fonacier, Jeff Chan, Gabe Norwood, Sonny Thoss, Mac Baracael, Rico Villanueva, Sol Mercado and JayR Reyes.

“It’s better for him to name his final 12 right away so that no one gets disappointed or feels bad in the end,” said one league official. “In the first place, he already knows all these players. He surely knows who will fit in or not.”

The board reached a consensus on this setup, doing away with the long process of several PBA players undergoing virtual tryout.

“And it’s easier to arrange practices of the team with this scheme,” the same official said.

In his meeting with Reyes, Salud said: “We will thresh out final schedule of practices of the national team within the parameters and guidelines laid down by the governors as per the instruction of the team owners.”

Salud said Reyes would be allowed to look for their possible training abroad.

Reyes is likely to include the 2013 Jones Cup in their calendar, and Salud said they would put these things into consideration as they compress the Governors Cup schedule.

“We will shorten the tourney as much as practicable to give the national team more time to train. Details will follow,” said Salud.

The best PH five for Fiba-Asia

The Philippines will be represented by the best in the Fiba Asia World Championship qualifier in August at Mall of Asia Arena.
The Philippine Basketball Association made sure of this yesterday after requiring all the league’s 10 teams to lend at least one player to the Smart Gilas Pilipinas national five in its bid to finish at least third and qualify for the world championship in Spain next year.
The PBA board, in a meeting, also allowed commissioner Chito Salud to tweak the season-ending Governors’ Cup schedule to give the national team ample time to prepare for the Aug. 1 to 11 Fiba joust.
“Yes, we will shorten the third conference,” said Salud. “We will alter it as much as practicable, shorten it to give more time for the national team to train.”
Originally, the Governors’ Cup has a May 12 to July 28 play period.
Salud is also scheduled to thresh out with national coach Chot Reyes the final schedule of practices and tournaments of Smart Gilas prior to the Fiba event.
Included in this item are stints abroad, including the Jones Cup in Taipei where the Philippines is the defending champion. With the Fiba Asia event opening on Aug. 1, the Jones Cup was moved to July 6 to 14.
Reyes, who is in Hong Kong with the Smart Gilas cadet crew for a tournament, had said in earlier interviews that he planned to take the team to tough European competitions.
Reyes particularly wants players like Arwind Santos and June Mar Fajardo of Petron Blaze and Marc Pingris of San Mig Coffee.

PBA-backed Gilas 2 toughest, best prepared

By Nelson Beltran (The Philippine Star) | Updated January 27, 2013 - 12:00am

Quote:
MANILA, Philippines - With the all-out support of the national cage federation and the full backing of the pro league, a national team distinct from all previous PBA-backed Phl squads will be formed, looking well capable of making a good run in the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship.

The soon-to-be-formed Gilas Pilipinas II will feature PBA stars with a naturalized player and a battery of coaches with previous Asian meet experiences playing before home fans at the MOA Arena in Pasay City Aug. 1-11.

No other national teams have enjoyed all these privileges since the PBA allowed its players to don the national jersey in the 1990 Beijing Asian Games.

No team has had the benefit of playing with a naturalized player except the original Gilas Pilipinas squad that was built around Marcus Douthit. The PBA had token representations on that team, though.

No team either has had a returning coach from the previous Asian competition, except Rajko Toroman who handled Gilas Pilipinas in the 2010 Guanzhou Asian Games and in the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship in Wuhan, China.

And, of course, no national team has played before Filipino crowd since the 1973 Asian Basketball Conference Championship when the iconic duo of Robert Jaworski and Ramon Fernandez led the home team to a historic title run at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
Sportshub ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1

Gilas Pilipinas II will have all of these as it vies for a ticket to the 2014 FIBA World Cup in the Asian joust which Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas will host in August.

These are not lost on Meralco mentor Ryan Gregorio, an assistant coach in the previous Gilas Pilipinas team, who is now excited for all the personalities who would make the team embarking on a journey to land the 2014 Spain world championship.

“We are in the best situation to make our mark in the global scene. I believe coach Chot (Reyes) and coach Jong (Uichico) who both have been national coaches before are tailor-made for the task at hand,” said Gregorio.

“They have an enormous understanding of international brand of basketball. The presence of Marcus Douthit as a naturalized Filipino is also a tremendous boost in our campaign. The PBA has also taken the initiative to lend all its resources to form the best team possible. But I believe that the biggest advantage that we have is that it is going to be played in our home country,” he added.

He was part of Toroman’s coaching staff in the last Asian Games and FIBA Asia tourney and among deputies by Reyes in their triumphant Jones Cup campaign, but not in Gilas’ current journey in Hong Kong.

“I’m blessed to have the opportunity to be part of the Smart Gilas team under coach Chot that won the Jones Cup crown, and it is every coach’s dream to be part of such a nationalistic endeavor. If the opportunity comes again and I get drafted to serve the country in whatever capacity, I would certainly make myself available,” Gregorio said.

A good shot to make the global meet became possible as SBP reaped the fruits of its persistence and patience, gaining the hosting rights of the Asian joust, then the PBA committed full backing, giving coach Chot Reyes leeway to revise his current pool of players. The pro league also agreed to further shorten its season-ending tourney, giving way to the preparation of the national squad in the run-up to the Asian meet.

Again, no team has had as many privileges.

The Northern Cement team of coach Ron Jacobs had naturalized reinforcements but the core was made up of young amateur players.

Coach Robert Jaworski, meanwhile, had an all-pro selection for the 1990 Beijing Asiad but was given just two weeks to prepare the team.

Neither coaches Norman Black (1994 Hiroshima), Tim Cone (1998 Bangkok), Uichico (2002 Busan), Reyes (2007 Tokushima) and Yeng Guiao (2009 Tianjin) enjoyed as many perks.

Reyes and Uichico will be back together in the war room, drawing the team’s battle plans. Reyes is the first coach given a second chance to call the shots in a PBA-backed national team.

The homecourt advantage, however, could well be the biggest difference for Smart Gilas II.

The FIBA Asia Championship (formerly ABC Championship) has been held in the country twice in 1960 and 1973. The Phl squad ended up triumphant on both occasions.

Gilas dethrones Southern California for title sweep of Hong Kong cagefest From the wires

January 27, 2013, 05:43 pm

Quote:
GILAS Pilipinas brought honor to the country once again after dethroning Southern California-Fukienese Association with a come-from-behind 81-77 win to rule the 19th Super Kung Sheung Cup championship Sunday at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium in Wanchai, Hong Kong.

Kevin Alas, Gary David, and naturalized player Marcus Douthit anchored the Nationals’ huge comeback and finish the eight-team tournament unbeaten in all of their five games.

Alas, the son of Alaska assistant coach Louie and star player of the Letran Knights in the NCAA, was adjudged Most Valuable Player of the meet.

The championship is the second for Gilas Pilipinas after winning the championship of the 34th William Jones Cup basketball tournament in Taipei last year with a similar comeback win against the USA during the title-clinching win. The championship came a week after the national team – mostly comprised of cadet players from the national pool – finished in 6th place during the 24th Dubai Invitational basketball tournament.

“ YES! Big hope 4 d future ,” tweeted coach Chot Reyes in his account @coachot shortly after the win.

Fiba-Asia secretary general says Smart Gilas team considered a top contender for title
Quote:
Hosting a Fiba-Asia event “doesn’t come every year,” according to cage body secretary-general Hagop Khajirian.

That’s why the Philippines, come August 1-11, could be a strong bet for the title.

“The Philippines playing in the semifinals (of Fiba-Asia), why not? Champion in Fiba-Asia, why not?” Khajirian asked when he met the press yesterday at the tournament’s official venue, the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.

‘Speed, shooting’ key to forming PH team for Fiba Asia, says Chot Reyes
MANILA, Philippines – Quick and lethal from the outside. These two components will be key in forming the National team as far as its head coach Chot Reyes is concerned.
“Wala naman tayong chance maging malaki. No matter what we’ll do we’ll never have size advantage,” he said.
Reyes said the Smart Gilas Pilipinas squad which will compete in the 27th Fiba-Asia Championship to be held here in August must have the “speed and outside shooting” to offset its lack of size.
“It must be versatile. It must be a team that must have role players. Magbubuo tayo ng team hindi tayo magbubuo ng collection of superstars,” Reyes added.
Outside naturalized Filipino Marcus Douthit, the Philippines won’t really have the size and length to match up with Asian powers Iran, China, South Korea and even Lebanon.
“Primarily, we’ll have a quick team kasi kung maliit ka na mabagal ka pa, sa kangkungan ka pupulutin,” said Reyes.

Sana kunin ni Chot si Slaughter and Fajardo pareho para kung sakaling kelangan ng tall line-up sa isang situation ay pwede ganito

C Slaughter
PF Douthit
SF Dilinger
SG Norwood
PG Castro

plus si Fajardo as back-up center or kapag na injury si Douthit(wag naman sana)
