Nowadays, Unhasu-brand cosmetics for medical treatment and makeup, including ageing-retarding cream, hair-growth lotion, whitening lotion and hair spray, are enjoying growing popularity with users. They are the products of the Pyongyang Cosmetics Factory.

Established in April Juche 51 (1962), the factory has turned out various kinds of cosmetics such as skin cream, beauty lotion, perfume, shampoo and hair conditioner. Of late, it has been splendidly renovated as a model and standard for the nation's cosmetics factories, with a large capacity.

Covering a total floor space of 29 200 square metres, it has such processes for producing basic, makeup and cleansing cosmetics and their containers.

All the processes from mixing raw materials to packaging are put on an automated and streamlined basis. All workplaces and corridors are tightly closed by glasses as suited to its characteristics of producing cosmetics. By establishing a new sanitation room and high-performance air conditioners, the factory has fully ensured a germ- and dust-free environment for production. Some processes with GMP certification are provided with modern facilities such as extruding, filling, evaporating and packaging machines.

The factory is directing efforts to improving the quality of its products on the basis of having integrated scientific research with production.

A cosmetics institute carries on researches to develop new products and improve their quality and, in the course of this, finds out their mixing ratios and standard regulations. Such findings are saved in an integrated production system of the factory to be introduced into production.

Real-time monitoring system has been established so as to analyse and predict production and management activities of all processes in a scientific and comprehensive way and ensure the biggest profit.

A cosmetics analytical laboratory plays a pivotal role. Its researchers conduct qualitative and quantitative analysis of all materials and cosmetics, detecting of harmful substances and evaluation of effectiveness.

The officials, technicians and workers of the factory are making redoubled efforts to produce natural and functional cosmetics to meet the tastes, characteristics and demands of people by deepening their studies into the developing trend of cosmetics around the world.

Rapid progress made on construction site near Ryomyong Street

Despite apparent slowdowns in other projects in Pyongyang, construction at large-scale site is progressing

A large-scale construction project located immediately south of Ryomyong Street in Pyongyang has advanced rapidly since September 2017, satellite imagery of the site shows.

Exclusive aerial images of Pyongyang in September showed what appeared to be the early stages of construction on several rectangular buildings as well as the presence of larger more complete buildings in an area bordering the Kim Il Sung University campus to the west, an elite area to the east, Ryomyong Street to the north and the Taedong river to the south.

Satellite imagery from Planet Labs Inc. in February 2018 now shows advanced progress made on over two dozen multi-level structures at the location as well as developments west of the main cluster of buildings in an area of approximately 77,000 square meters.

This includes the conversion of a large area of land previously used – in part – for temporary shelter into what appears to be a large body of water immediately south of the Kim Il Sung University building number 3, which was finished in 2017 after a long period of construction stretching back to 2006.

In February, blue and green paint or roofing also appears to have been applied to multiple buildings on the site, likely indicating an advanced level of construction.

The North Korean Government made construction on Ryomyong Street a major priority in 2016 and 2017. The street underwent an overhaul on a massive scale with over 50 buildings being erected – including a 70-story skyscraper – between the groundbreaking ceremony in April 2016 and the opening ceremony in April 2017.

It received extensive media coverage, with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un continually monitoring the site’s progress. Kim also attended the opening ceremony of the street, which was witnessed by foreign media including NK Pro.

In contrast to the coverage of Ryomyong Street, the building site to the south has – so far – not been reported on.

The consistent and rather rapid advancement of construction at the site – albeit with a relative slow down over late December and early January when temperatures in the city plummet – is also in contrast to multiple other construction projects in Pyongyang, which recent NK Pro images indicate have either slowed or halted.

This includes images of the East Pyongyang Mall published by NK Pro on Thursday that show the project in a state of what appears to be chronic stagnation.

The project was being constructed in cooperation with the Hong Kong-based Great China International Group, North Korean state media reporting from a ground-breaking ceremony at the site in January 2014 said.

The pace of construction on several tower blocks surrounding Kim Il Sung square also appears to have slowed, images from the capital taken in January show. NK Pro images show that construction between September 2017 and January 2018 very little progress on the buildings, which as yet, have also not been reported on by state media.

New roads connected to Pyongyang’s unfinished Ryugyong Hotel
Two new access roads added to front of hotel, photos reveal

Two new access roads appear to have been connected to Pyongyang’s iconic-but-unfinished Ryugyong Hotel, January-dated photos seen by NK News show. The addition of asphalt and painted road markings to two causeways connecting the hotel entrance to nearby Sinwon street follows the July 2017 removal of a large wall that for years blocked public access to...

Construction underway near N. Korea’s space satellite center, images show

Observers divided, however, on whether project is linked to DPRK's space program

A major construction project is underway adjacent to North Korea’s General Satellite Control Center in Pyongyang, March dated street-level photos and satellite imagery suggest.

At least two large buildings appear to be rising immediately next to the center – which state media says is used for tracking the “real-time display of satellite launch” – suggesting they could be linked to the further development of North Korea’s controversial space exploration program.

“I can’t say for certain what they are for, but an extension of ‘General Satellite Control Center’ seems reasonable,” said Curtis Melvin, a North Korea researcher at the U.S. Korea Institute in Washington DC, about the pictures.

Martyn Williams, who runs the North Korea Tech website and has written extensively about the DPRK space exploration program, said the construction could be linked to the satellite launch program.

“If it is part of the center then it seems to represent a major expansion ahead of the promised launch of more satellites and would indicate North Korea is serious about its space program,” he said.

While North Korea has not launched a satellite since February 2016, representatives of the Center’s National Aerospace Development Administration (NADA) told an NK News contributor last year that Pyongyang has plans to conduct at least two more satellite launches this year.

Kim Jong Un was earlier in the month reported to have agreed to a missile and nuclear test moratorium to facilitate U.S.-DPRK talks, although it not clear whether satellite launches will also be suspended.

In 2012, for example, a freshly inked deal between North Korea and the U.S. quickly fell apart when Pyongyang announced it would be going ahead with a satellite launch, despite agreeing to a missile test moratorium with Washington.

The purpose of the new buildings, however, remains unclear, and one observer said the new buildings may not be linked to the satellite program itself.

“They could simply be a revolutionary history museum and house of culture for the employees,” said Melvin.

“These are typical kinds of structures for North Korean facilities that are not immediately obvious at the General Satellite Control Center,” he continued.

“But we will have to wait and see until a foreigner visits them or they are featured in the official media.”

The adjacent Satellite Control Center also includes an “auxiliary display and control room and optical observation room,” North Korean state media said when Kim Jong Un visited the site in 2015.

“The status of the DPRK as a satellite producer-launcher remains unchanged though the hostile forces deny it and its space development can never be abandoned, no matter who may oppose,” Kim Jong Un reportedly said when he visited in 2015.

Taedongmun Apartment

Height: Architectural - ???m
Height: Occupied - 93m
Floors Above Ground - 30

Panel advertising the apartment under construction in central Pyongyang.

A panel, spotted in the center of the DPRK capital, claims the apartment is being constructed “in a contemporary manner” and guarantees the “highest-quality” construction.

The ground plan says the apartment will be equipped with what appears to be an elevator access control system for additional security.

The apartments will measure around 180 square meters, excluding the veranda, and will be built in the Taedongmun-dong in the Central District of Pyongyang. Construction of apartments ranging in size from 165 to 195 square meters had previously been seen on Pyongyang’s Ryomyong and Mirae Scientists streets.

Little architectural standards? Have you seen the designs for the average motel chain in the U.S.?

Creativity is useless if you've got bean counters, cost accountants wanting to please their clients with the cheapest it can be built!

Take a look at the myriad cookie-cutter homes here in Las Vegas, all in shades of brown ad nauseum! Shades of brown are the pick here in Las Vegas, reason being it all blends into the desert landscape better.

Some of the buildings in Ryumyong New Town have been criticized for poor construction, especially the tallest condominium (270 m), which was built in only 74 days. A building of that height would usually be constructed in around two years. Some experts state that these buildings may easily collapse because of the poor construction. I was thinking this can easily happen if an earthquake were to affect Pyongyang. I think this indicates that North Korean officials probably have no regard for earthquake safety/engineering.

Wow, that is quite the display. It certainly looks fantastic all lit up like that. I guess they're trying to draw away from the fact that it's still completely empty at the moment.
