Thats a great facility.

If I am travelling with 7-8 people, is it possible to hire a driver & vehicle for the day to take us on Zirat (in both Mecca & Madinah)?

I think the above Bus is a great idea but for 8 of us it's 640 SAR & I am sure it might be cheaper to hire a driver/van?? Thanks

I don't know about to hire a driver & vehicle is possible.

In Makkah and Madinah, there are private taxi operators for tours. I suggest you when you will be there you ask people about that.

Proportion of Hajis without
permits drops to 3%

Pilgrims departing from Jeddah airport
September 28, 2017 - 8 Muharram 1439

MAKKAH — The ratio of pilgrims who sneaked to the holy sites to perform Haj without permits dropped to 3 percent this year, said Makkah Emir Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, chairman of the Central Haj Committee.

Speaking at a meeting of the committee on Tuesday, he said the number of pilgrims who were able to enter Makkah and the holy sites without Haj permits in 2015 was about 9 percent and it was 5 percent last year.

The emir told the meeting that over 1.3 million pilgrims who came from abroad have all left for their respective home countries through the Kingdom's air, land and sea exits.

The Haj will be officially declared over by Muharram 15 (Oct. 5). The Umrah pilgrims have already started arriving in the Kingdom after the season began on Muharram 1 (Sept. 21).

The emir said the campaign titled "Haj: A worship and a civilized conduct" has increased awareness among people to respect the Haj rules and regulations and has helped decrease the number of people doing the pilgrimage without official permits.

"The campaign has also improved the services being offered to the guests of God including cleanliness. It has eased traffic movement and prevented squatting on the streets and under bridges," he added.

Prince Khaled Al- revealed that cases have been filed against about 80 Haj service providers and 94 people have been arrested for various violations.

He asked all the concerned departments to start preparing for the next year's Haj from now after studying all the positive and negative aspects, which were noticed during the season.

Speaking about the positive points noticed during the just-concluded Haj, Prince Khaled said they included the establishment of more development projects in the holy sites, which were implemented in a record short time, easier transportation of pilgrims by the Mashaer train and the shuttle buses that transported pilgrims from their places of accommodation to the Grand Mosque to offer prayers.

"The experiment of sending a team from the Passport Department to foreign countries to process the pilgrims' passports right at their home was successful. In Kuala Lumpur, 1,692 pilgrims completed their procedures in this way," he said.

The emir said as many as 3,949 licenses were issued for the accommodation of pilgrims in Makkah and more than 50 percent of the tents in Arafat were supplied with air-conditioners.

He said the new services that proved successful also included the setting up of an emergency 50-bed hospital in the Grand Mosque, the establishment of 14 health centers in Arafat and the increasing of beds for pilgrims suffering from sunstroke and heat exhaustion to 286 in hospitals in the holy sites.

"More than 400 sick pilgrims were transported to Arafat from hospitals in Makkah and Madinah to complete their Haj rites," he said.

PAKISTAN

Finger prints made mandatory
for Umrah pilgrims

September 26, 2017

LAHORE - All the Umrah pilgrims from Pakistan will be fingerprinted before proceeding for the holy journey from next month, sources in Ministry of Religious Affairs confided to The Nation on Monday.

The pilgrims would also be charged a fee for the process, the amount of which has not been decided so far.

The move has been seen by Travel Agents Association of Pakistan (TAAP) with dismay and its office bearers have given a wakeup call to their members against the decision. They said the decision will not only double the miseries of the pilgrims but also put the security of the country at stake.

A former senior office-bearer of the TAAP, who did not want to be named, said the Saudi Arabian government had also tried to impose such conditions on pilgrims couple of years ago but it was also opposed by the TAAP then.

He said the firm supposed to operate for fingerprint was Dubai based and one of its directors was an Indian national so Pakistan cannot share the data of its citizens with such firm. He said that after their protest the decision was suspended by the authorities but now after two years it was being implemented again.

Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Islamabad has issued a letter addressed to Ministry of Religious Affairs Islamabad and Haj and Umrah Travel Agencies in this regard.

According to the letter, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Riyadh has directed to activate the Biometric Registration for all visas, including those for Haj and Umrah. For this purpose “VFS/Tasheel” company has been assigned to work beside travel agencies of Haj and Umrah.

“We hope that you comply with the new directions and apply the biometric registration for Haj and Umrah visa applications. The Royal Embassy of Suadi Arabia would like to avail itself of this opportunity to renew to Etimad office assurance of its highest consideration,” it reads.

It is worth mentioning here that Etimad Pakistan will handle the processing of visa applications for Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Every individual requiring a visa to enter KSA from Pakistan (whether for Haj, Umrah, business, work or any other purpose) will have to come to Etimad Visa Service Centers (VSC) in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar and Quetta to provide biometrics data which is now a compulsory part of their visa application.

Currently there are six centres in Pakistan: two in Karachi and one each in Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar and Quetta. These centres will collectively process around 1.2million visa applications per year. But TAAP statistics shows that last year 1.5 millions pilgrims visited Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah while 1.85 lacs performed Haj.

TAAP is not intact currently since its last election in Lahore was challenged in Lahore High Court but even then some office-bearers are trying to mobilise the members to react over the issue. A former office-bearer said they would write to foreign office, embassies and ministries concerned to get their protest recorded against the decision.

Brunei’s strong relationship with Makkah

September 25, 2017

MAKKAH – the centre of the Muslim world. Our Kiblat, where every Muslim faces towards Kaabah when they pray to Allah the Almighty, wherever they may be at all times.

This article focusses on the historical relationship between the Malay world and Makkah. For Brunei Darussalam, this Islamic relationship was established long ago since the era of Muslims from Brunei performed the Haj pilgrimage to Makkah.

The pilgrimage is the fifth pillar of Islam, and the religion obliges it to be performed by every Muslim who has the capability to visit the Baitullah in the holy land of Makkah, at least once in their lifetime. The Haj is enshrined in Al-Quran and Hadith as stated in the following verse: “And Allah the Almighty obligates the people to perform Haj by visiting the House of Allah, whoever is able to reach Him.”

The existence of the Kaabah as the Kiblat and the centre of the world is by the will of Allah the Almighty through His Word in Surah Al-Ma’idah verse 97, which says: “Allah has made the Kaabah a holy house and a centre of worship for mankind.” Prophet Adam (pbuh) was among the first human beings to establish the Kaabah and the creation of Earth originated from the present location of the Kaabah.

At the time of Prophet Nuh (pbuh), a great flood ravaged the land, but the holy land was protected and preserved by the will of Allah the Almighty. Prophet Ibrahim (pbuh) and his son Prophet Ismail (pbuh) rebuilt the land with help from revelations from Allah the Almighty at the original site.

Prophet Ibrahim has revealed that Makkah remains protected from human disturbances and is secured in a peaceful situation. This is evidenced in verse 67, Surah Al-‘Ankabut of Al-Quran: “Do they not know that Allah has made their land (Makkah) secure?”

From historical perspectives, formal relations between Makkah and Brunei Darussalam were established by Brunei’s third Sultan, Sultan Sharif Ali over 600 years ago.

These ties and relationships are maintained to this day, with Muslims in the country visiting Makkah and Madinah every year to perform the Haj and Umrah. Based on historical records, the close relationship between Nusantara – including Brunei – and the Islamic world in the Arab lands can be seen through three aspects, namely, the dissemination of the Tarikat (meaning the path or the road one must take to reach Allah the Almighty), the migration of the Hadramaut community, and the role of pilgrimage.

The development of Tarikat took place at the end of the Caliphs’ reign in Baghdad. It happened in contemporary times with Islam in the Malay Archipelago. Tarikat has been the main reason for the spread of Islamic propaganda in this region. It was the reason for activities of the famous Sufi experts from Melaka and Pasai during the reign of Sultan Mansur Syah (1456-1477), as well as the activities of Hamzah Fansuri in Aceh in the 16th Century, who introduced the Tarikat of Qadiriyah which he received while he was in Baghdad.

Likewise, most of the Wali Songo (Wali Sembilan) – such as Sunan Gunung Jati who developed Islam in the 16th Century in West Java – were developers of the Tarikat (Sunan Gunung Jati acquired the Tarikat while in Makkah).

In the 17th Century, the Sattariyah Tarikat began to develop, brought about by Abdul Rauf Singkel through the development of a ‘pesantren’ school in Aceh in 1661. In Minangkabau, the Tarikat was developed by Sheikh Burhanuddin.

Khalwatiyah Tarikat is a branch of the Tarikat Suhrawardiyah derived from Khurasan, which was developed by Sheikh Zahirruddin who died in 1397, and was disseminated through Sheikh Yusuf from 1626-1699. Sheikh Yusuf had gone to Makkah to perform the Haj in 1644.

There was also Tarikat of Naqsyabandiyah – pioneered by Sheikh Bahauddin al-Naqsyabandi who died in Bukhara in 1388 – which had influenced other Tarikats such as Sattariyiyah.

It is concluded that the diversity of the names of the Tarikats which had been brought from their places of origin such as India, Khurasan, Baghdad and Bukhara, by merchants from the Middle East, Gujarat and Bengal were the links to the development of Islamic Dakwah in the Malay Archipelago up to and including the islands of Borneo.

The Arab community, especially from Hadramaut, Yemen has influenced the development of Islam in the Malay Archipelago, including Brunei.

Most of Sultan Sharif Ali’s friends who came to Brunei and Borneo also played an important role in the propagation of Islam, especially between the time of Sultan Bolkiah (the fifth Sultan of Brunei) and Sultan Muhammad Hassan.

Even with the arrival of Western powers, the population of the Arab community in the Malay world kept increasing, according to the governor of Singapore, Sir Stamford Raffles, in 1812 – throughout Java and Madura, 621 people of Arab and Moors descent had been recorded; this number shot up to 20,000 in 1885.

This population further increased a number of years later, as revealed in a 1905 monograph by LWC Van den Berg, which states that the number of Arabs from Hadramaut was 30,000 at the time. Most of these Arabs lived on the north coast of Java, Pekalongan, Semarang, Surabaya and Palembang, where they carried out trade and Islamic missionary activities.

Likewise, most of the Arabs in Brunei and the islands of Borneo were merchants, settling there and marrying the locals, and spreading and teachings of Islam.

The third factor that fostered the nature of the relationship of the Malay world with Makkah was the pilgrimage. When the British landed in Brunei in the early 20th Century, it was told that an Englishman named Hedley Churchward performed the Haj in 1910. Churchward, whose Muslim name was Mahmoud Mobarek, was the first British citizen to perform the pilgrimage to the centre of the world, travelling to Makkah by sea for nearly five months.

In the past, visiting the House of God was a struggle and a real touchstone of supreme faith for every servant of Allah the Almighty – a real test of patience and devotion. No matter how far beyond the centre of the world, every servant of Allah the Almighty is obliged to fulfil the fifth pillar of Islam.

Everything is dependent on the destiny and the will of Allah the Almighty; his servants are only trying to endure all the hardships and realise the desires of each. It is fortunate for every servant whom Allah has blessed as a guest in Makkah, especially the pilgrims from this country who recently performed the Haj in Makkah, may all of them be granted ‘mabrur Haj’.

Sultan Sharif Ali was the first Bruneian to visit the House of Allah. After that, it is undeniable that people from Brunei began to make the journey to Makkah, travelling in yachts – journeys which took months and even years before they finally made it back to Brunei.

This relationship between Brunei and Makkah grew closer with the arrival of Western powers – specifically the British, who transformed maritime travel in the region with the introduction of steam vessels when they colonised Labuan Island in 1846. Bruneians then began performing the pilgrimage to Makkah by using these ships, setting off from Labuan, then on to Singapore and Penang, which took about three months.

From Jeddah heading to Madinah or Makkah, camels were used as transportation and pilgrims spent the night in the desert of Madinah. Now, picture the difficulty of this compared to a present-day flight, which takes just seven hours plus a bus ride from Jeddah, which takes six hours depending on the road conditions.

According to historical records, Sultan Muhammad Ali (1660 – 1661) was the second Sultan of Brunei to perform a pilgrimage to Makkah after Sultan Sharif Ali. This is based on inscriptions on his tombstone which shows the word ‘Haji’ (Haj) appended to his name.

At the time, the duration of discharge from the holy land was quite long, and the initial stage of the procedures for the Brunei people to perform Haj was managed by an Amil or Syeikh in Makkah, compared to today, where this process is managed by travel agents appointed by the government. Additionally, during the era of the British Resident in Brunei, unlike the other Malay communities in the region, the Bruneian community was not restricted from performing Umrah.

Alhamdulillah, here is the grace and favour that we have gained through the reign of the monarchy system from the time of the first ruler, Sultan Muhammad Shah, to this day. Islam has perfected the life of society and the state of land in Brunei Darussalam.

Hopefully the bonds and ties of Brunei with the city of Makkah Al-Mukarramah will continue for the sake of Allah the Almighty through the performing of Islam’s fifth pillar.

Splattered blood near Kaaba:
What Saudi Arabia security forces say

Photo of blood splattered near Kaaba
is old and is related to injured pilgrim, security forces say

Special Forces say this picture is old and is related to a pilgrim's injured leg.
October 1, 2017

Manama: The Special Forces for the security of the Grand Mosque in Makkah have denied reports of an incident next to Kaaba, the sacred site towards which Muslims orient themselves during the five daily prayers.

A picture showing blood on the marble tiles near the Kaaba circulated on social media on Saturday. The social media post claimed that the photo was from an incident that occurred in front of Kaaba.

However, Sameh Al Selmi, the spokesperson for the Special Forces, said that the picture was not recent.

“It is an old picture and it was taken after an African pilgrim in his 50s was injured to his leg after he slipped as large crowds were circumambulating the Kaaba,” he said, as quoted by Saudi news site Sabq.

“The injured pilgrim was given first aid treatment on the spot before he was taken to the nearby Ajyah Hospital,” he said.

Social media users said they were shocked that some people “had time to invent stories and launch rumours that would not survive minutes since they would be denied by those with the correct information.”

“There is a strange world out there that is not obviously pleased with the serenity prevailing in Saudi Arabia,” Hassan Al Muhawesh posted. “They are so intent on causing uneasiness and trouble and do want to see other people live in peace.”

That's a lot of blood for a simple 'leg injury'!

Makkah crane crash case:
All 13 defendants acquitted

October 1, 2017

JEDDAH – Some 750 days after the crane crash incident in Makkah Haram, the Penal Court in Makkah on Sunday acquitted all 13 people who were charged with negligence.

The court said they are not criminally responsible for the incident in which 108 people lost their lives and another 238 were injured when a crane involved in the Haram expansion project crashed on Sept. 11, 2015.

The Attorney General objected to the verdict and appealed against it.

His request was approved.

The Appeals Court had revoked an earlier verdict to overlook the case as it does not come under the jurisdiction of the court. It considered the case to be under Civil Defense. However, the Appeals Court asked the Penal Court to look into the case.

Makkah Public Transportation
Program inaugurated

Tuesday 3 October 2017

JEDDAH: Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, governor of Makkah, signed a contract to import, operate and maintain Makkah Public Transportation Program (MPTP) buses with an alliance of national and international specialized companies.

Hisham Al-Faleh, secretary-general of the Makkah Development Authority, which is supervising the program, said that the new buses will help in facilitating the circulation of traffic in Makkah, putting a limit to the social and economic losses resulting from car accidents and reducing environmental pollution.

This program is expected to provide more than 10,000 direct and indirect job opportunities.

Prince Khaled expressed appreciation on behalf of the people of Taif and for himself to King Salman for inaugurating the program that costs SR11 billion ($2.93 billion). This program falls among Vision 2030 programs.

Earlier, Prince Khaled said that local transport projects should keep pace with the increasing number of pilgrims.

He said that Makkah transport projects should achieve their targets to facilitate the citizens and pilgrims.

Capacity of 2 Harams
to expand manifold

Tuesday October 3, 2017 / 13 Muharram 1439

RIYADH — Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund is establishing two new companies to increase the number of pilgrims that the Kingdom can host at Two Holy Mosques.

The Kingdom’s Public Investment Fund said the companies — Rou’a Al-Haram and Rou’a Al-Madinahwill develop residential and commercial areas around the Grand Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah.

The fund said on Monday that the new companies will help the Kingdom accommodate more than 30 million people expected to visit Makkah every year and 23 million visitors a year to Madina by 2030.
