Manx Electric Railway

As a complete contrast to the above, the Isle of Man has three working tramways, none of which can be described as modern.

Longest of these lines is the Manx Electric Railway, opened in 1893 and still going strong with some elderly motive power. It is 17 miles (27 km) in length and is 3ft gauge, linking Derby Castle, just north of Douglas and Ramsey in the north of the island through largely rural territory.

Some photos from a visit in 2015.

Snaefell Mountain Railway, Isle of Man

At Laxey on the east coast of the Isle of Man the Manx Electric Railway meets the 3ft 6in gauge Snaefell Mountain Railway, which is 5.5 miles long and climbs up to the summit of Snaefell, the highest point of the island.

Again, the cars are all rather old, being built in 1895, although modernised with new trucks (made in London) and ex Aachen control gear took place in the 1970s.

Douglas Horse Tramway

At Derby Castle to the north of Douglas the Manx Electric Railway meets the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway which traverses Douglas Promenade, terminating at Victoria Pier.

This line opened in 1876 and has had a troubled existence in recent years, but it is still operating. The oldest car still in use dates from 1883, the newest from 1913

Car 45 (with motive power Mark) at Victoria Pier. This is one of the newest cars, dating from 1907!

Toastrack car 21 (1900 vintage) at Derby Castle

One of only three enclosed cars, 29, at Derby Castle on a rather wet day

Only double deck car is number 18. This is not used often as it is a bit heavy for the horses: although I saw it in use in 2015 I did not get a ride as it was taken into the depot at the end of this trip

Sheffield, UK

And so back from the Isle of Man to the modern world.

A few recent photos of the Supertram in Sheffield. Still waiting for public service on the tram-train service to Rotherham & Parkgate, but the tram-train cars can be seen out and about:

399 205 and 106 at Meadowhall in March 2018. Pity about the spot of rain on the lens

And a few slightly older shots.

Sheffield Tram-Train

The tram-train service from Sheffield to Rotherham Parkgate started in October 2018.

Yesterday I had my first ride on the tram-train route and a few (!) photos were taken.
