This sector must prove itself to be profitable enough to justify the use of a larger aircraft.

Commercially, this makes sense as the ATR serves a daily, non-peak period demand of up to 72 passengers to and from BWN. Come peak travel season, BI can easily upgrade the equipment to an A320.

You mean flights from Brunei to other cities in Borneo will all use ATR? This makes sense actually, given that Brunei has such a small population. Less than half of Kuching's population in fact.

Not really. As I mentioned before, A320 still serves BKI, albeit with lower frequency. I think it's x4 weekly, as of this week. RBA kept adjusting A320 service to BKI.

Can you expand on your equipment/capacity vs local population theory ?

To be honest, the purpose of BI serving these routes are NOT (for the most part) to serve Bruneian population or O&D pax. What they ultimately want is to use the hub-and-spoke concept to connect pax via BWN to other destinations they serve. For a hub-and-spoke concept to work, they need to have frequency, for the least, so that they can better connect their passengers.
But of course, A320 is used in BKI because Bruneians themselves love KK, and there is enough demand.

With a small population, the volume of passengers, especially those flying out will be lesser. For Brunei's case, its economy already highly dependent on oil and gas. Thus, tourism gets less attention, and less tourism sites are built and constructed. This further decrease the number of inbound passengers to Brunei as there isn't too much to see and do in Brunei. Hence, its more feasible for Brunei to use ATR for all its Borneo destinations.

I believe you're referencing almost wholly to a O&D (origin & destination) model on KCH-BWN vv route - which, based on past experiences has repeatedly proven unsustainable over time, however much effort that had been expended in tourism promotions at both Kuching and Bandar Seri Begawan (furthermore, are you certain for sure that tourism industry in Brunei isn't as well developed, or even more vibrant than Kuching's ?)

"BorneanWingz" has mentioned of the hub-and-spoke model for BI at BWN - considering population size of Brunei as a whole, that could be only option for BI with any real fighting chance. And if they get the magic right, perhaps BI can be for BWN what EK is for DXB, SQ for SIN, CX for HKG .....

Coming back to KCH-BWN, I do believe BI has taken the (rather drastic) step of wet leasing the Malindo ATRs for the route not because (I quote)..."Brunei has such a small population. Less than half of Kuching's population in fact"... but rather that traffic from Kuching's population isn't big enough to justify a larger feed to BWN, that require deployment of larger capacity aircraft. And that will be even more so when/if the SBW-BWN and BTU-BWN services come into being

Just an opinion
