(al Mall of Italy )

take it easy.

Westfield enters Europe in Milan, checks other locations
06 February 2012, 06:56 PM

After opening Europe's largest mall in London's Stratford in September, the giant Westfield group is in the early stages of its first mainland centre of similar size in Milan, and is also checking other major cities for locations, says a senior executive.
Bill Giouroukos, Director of Operations, told PIE that Westfield identified the northern Italian city with a joint venture partner and is in the early stage of planning. On the drawing board is a centre close to the 175,000 sq.m. GLA of Westfield Stratford City in size and also, at a projected investment of some £1.5bn, approaching the iconic UK mall's cost of £1.8bn. "We’re very excited about Milan. We believe it’s a very, very great market in terms of opportunity," Giouroukos said in a recent interview. "Obviously demographically and psycho-graphically it's an excellent market, right up there with some of the best in the world… So we believe there’s also a great opportunity for a big iconic mall, and that’s what we’re really looking for, opportunities in good markets."
Westfield, based and listed in Sydney, Australia, kept 50% ownership of the Stratford mall in East London at the gateway to the London 2012 Olympic Park. The remainder is owned jointly between the Netherlands-based APG pension fund and Toronto's Canada Pension Plan Investment Board. Anchored by flagship John Lewis, Marks & Spencer and Waitrose stores, Stratford City also offers a 17-screen cinema, the UK's largest casino, and 250 shops plus 70 places to dine. The total project, when completed, will include three hotels, around 13,000 sq.m. of office space, and 1,200 housing units - all expected to be developed after this summer's Olympics.
Westfield's new location in Milan is its first step onto the mainland. "The location’s there, identified by the joint venture partners - so we know where the location is and we believe that not only in the market itself but also the location within that market is very, very good," Giouroukos said. "But every asset is tailored to its local market. You’re not going to get an exact carbon copy of each other. Westfield London is different to Westfield Stratford City, and Westfield Milan will be obviously tailored to the local market. That said, there are special things that we do bring, whether they’re lifestyle leisure precincts, fashion elements, fresh food markets - which we introduced to the Stratford project - and we might be able to bring some of these into a new market." pie (For full interview see PIE 242, February Edition, published on Monday)

Direttamente dal sito Westfield - 1 maggio 2012...

Un estratto:

Consumers make more than 1.1 billion shopping visits to Westfield malls each year in Australia, New Zealand, the United States and United Kingdom. Recently, the Group entered Brazil in a joint venture and plans are underway for two new, iconic retail projects in Milan, Italy, and at the World Trade Center site in New York.
