Official Wolverhampton and Black Country Development Thread 4!

Went into Wolverhampton today, thought it would be busy as the kids go back to school tomorrow but it was dead!

The new Vodafone store is open and looks great.

o2 store is closing for refurbishment.

Matalan is coming along nicely, not long till opening now!

House of Fraser (Beatties) i thought was getting better, but looked awful in places today! All the things that these analysts keep saying need to go into these stores seem to be closing in HoF. They closed the restaurant on the top floor, the salon on the second, Paperchase closed and is now completely sealed off.

These things need putting back in there and done properly, I’d like to see a food area in there as well like in Selfridges in Birmingham! They could open a Yo Sushi in where Paperchase used to be and make money out of the rent as well!!

Just some suggestions!!

Debenhams closing down then

https://www.expressandstar.com/news/...-centre-store/

Disappointed it didn't even make it 2 years before the announcement. Hopefully the decision could be reversed but I'm sceptical; we're just not a Debenhams sort of city.

Just thinking that it would make a good new home for Primark and it would be good for the Mander centre to have a shop like that thats actually used by people.

Aldi Heath Town completed.

Express and Star

So it's not much different to a normal Aldi, but thankfully they've rendered it in brick to fit in with the surroundings.

Still disappointed; this plot was prime for residential and could have even held a landmark tower...

Brewers Yard is going to be just across the way, which is going to be pretty landmark-y. And we've already got Victoria Halls in that area as well. Another tower would have been nice but may have looked a little clumped together. I think residential is going to be well served in that area, and residents need supermarkets.

Equally could have been at the base of an apartment block

I suppose with Aldi's rate of store rebuilding, it'll come up for rebuild in the next few years anyway haha... perhaps once Builder's Yard is done, setting the precident for the area, any rebuild of this Aldi could incorporate apartments. Would be easy to use it as the base for a decent block even if not a tower, done before in many places.

A small shop, maybe, but an entire supermarket? It would be horribly busy almost 24/7, I'd hate to live above that.

Tell you what, I'm on Anglesey, and it really makes you appreciate the retail we've got in Wolverhampton. The High Streets here are in a dire state (largest towns nearby Llangefni, Bangor, Holyhead). When Shoe Zone is closing down you know you're in trouble.

The only oddity is that Bangor somehow manages to sustain two branches of WHSmith on its high street, when we can't even have one nor anything similar in Wolverhampton.

But that's small cakes. The actual high streets here are quite depressing. Was expecting pleasant seaside towns but am getting Bilston on crack.

Tbh, wouldn't want a WHSmith. Criminally overpriced.

True, but a similar shop would be useful a lot of the time. There's a few magazines I get that I have nowhere to buy from, amongst other things.

How about this for Wolverhampton

Quote:
eBay, the online selling platform, is set to open its first UK concept store in Wolverhampton.

The site will allow small businesses to sell and showcase their products. eBay said it wanted to reinvent high street retailing, according to Bloomberg.

It will be based in Wolverhampton for a month and involve 40 small companies.

Ebay have been contacted for further information, but Rob Hattrell, vice president of eBay in the UK, told Bloomberg: “The small retailers taking part in Wolverhampton’s retail revival have already shown that physical and online retail can survive, and thrive, together.

“They have achieved more than £2m in sales as of March and many have employed more staff as a direct result of the partnership.

“This pop-up store aims to take that growth, and the value of this programme, to the next level.

“It will explore how stores of the future could combine technology with that vital human connection to powerful effect, whatever the size of the business.”

Sounds good to me. Wolves has been the pilot of some scheme with eBay. I'll be honest I haven't paid too much attention to it.

It's only going to be open for a month though.

Supposedly it opened today. So... where? Haven't been any planning apps so must be in one of the shopping centres.

It's in i10, the old noodle place (i only know because i walk past it daily). I think the posters said the 11th it opens, but it might have been the 10th.

Maybe I'm being daft but I can't for the life of me work out what this shop actually sells or does.

I think it’s companies that use eBay for sales and this will be a sort of showroom to boost their profiles/sales and no doubt eBay will be on hand to try to get more potential sellers through themselves
