Chinese firm conducts Iloilo monorail study
Quote:
A Chinese firm is doing a two-month feasibility study for a proposed monorail system in this city.

“If viable, this project may address the city’s transportation concerns,” said Mayor Mabilog during the August 22 signing of the agreement for the study, which will be conducted by BYD Auto Industry Co. Ltd.

China’s BYD opens its first commercial monorail
SEPTEMBER 4, 2017 by Charles Clover in Beijing

Quote:

The first such monorail went into operation in the Northwest provincial capital of Yinchuan on Friday after a brief ceremony Thursday. BYD says it has interest from more than 100 cities for the system, including New York and Cape Town in South Africa. Part of the attraction is cost — one-fifth of the capital costs of a subway system, according to BYD, and it takes a third of the time to build. Twenty cities, mainly in China, plan to build one in the coming year, BYD said, and its first foreign customer will be the Philippine city of Iloilo.

Pre-feasibility study for monorail project on
The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) approved the Memorandum of Understanding and Non-Disclosure Agreement between the Iloilo City government and BYD Auto Industry Company Limited for the conduct of a pre-feasibility study for the implementation of a comprehensive monorail system in the metropolis.
This, after the members of BYD Auto Industry Company Limited presented to the SP the proposed establishment of monorail during Tuesday’s session.
Iloilo City is the first local government in the country which the BYD has made such proposal.
Senior regional manager of Asia-Pacific Auto Sales Division of BYD Auto Industry Company Limited, Benjamin Zhao made it clear during the presentation that the city government will not shoulder any expenses for the pre-feasibility study which will last for two months.
The pre-feasibility study will determine the potential of the said project in the city. The outcome of the pre-feasibility study will be also presented at SP.
Zhao said the BYD Auto Industry Company Limited plans to put up the monorail from Iloilo City going to Iloilo International Airport.
BYD’s monorail is the company’s social responsibility to solve the congestion problem and improve the quality of life in cities around the world without significant infrastructure costs or traffic strains from prolonged construction time associated with conventional railways.
Zhao also said that aside from addressing the traffic congestion, the monorail or skyrail will also lessen the carbon emission in a city.
“The monorail can be flexible and is applicable to different cities,” said Zhao.
Others who were present during the presentation of project were the general manager of Asia-Pacific Auto Sales Division of the BYD Auto Industry Company Limited, Liu Xueliang; engineering specialist of BYD Rail Transit Research Institute, Tim Qi; senior project engineer of BYD Rail Transit Research Institute, Dean Tu; and sales manager of Asia-Pacific Auto Sales Division, Vincent Zhou.

W-wait, how can the feasiblility study and signing all occur on the same month? Is this set na?

A city in taking care of its own needs has identified a problem, supplier offers a solution, city purchases the solution. So straightforward! What madness is this?

I know Iloilo is one of the richer provinces, but I still can't believe it.

They say the monorail is 1/5th of the cost of a metro rail.

This monorail is around 20km around the same length as the ongoing MRT7. The latter cost 60 billion php. That would make the monorail around 12 billion php, if it's 1/5th. Not sure if Iloilo can afford it since their city's budget is only around 2 billion php. Maybe it's part of China's loan initiative. Idk. Still i support this.

If this true not fake news, then congratulations to Iloilo. I also think in the downtown core of Cebu city they should use monorail in loop lines in the inner city plus a metro rail to extend to the greater Cebu area or as far north and south of the island.

Just curious but since its all over the news...since suspected drug protector Mayor Mabilog is *gone* and likely not coming back unless Digong is overthrown, could this monorail (or any local Iloilo project) actually proceed without the mayor's signature?

The reason why I ask is there is this pending local ordinance in QC requiring renters to register at the Barangay that was passed by council but it can't be enacted until it is signed by Mayor Bistek. I even remember back in the LRT1 NEP days, the mayor of Caloocan held the project hostage unless the DOTC gives them the Malvar Station. After weeks of stalemate, I recall the government promised provisions for that station will be included, then when the permits were issued...

So assuming the monorail is being pushed through, any approval or permit would probably still need to be signed by Mabilog, right?
