Pilgrims may soon travel
to Madinah on camel backs

Camels at King Abdulaziz camel festival 2019
2019-02-16

MAKKAH — The Ministry of Haj and Umrah is currently giving final touches to a fascinating project that will allow pilgrims and visitors as well as citizens and residents of the Kingdom to travel to Madinah on camels following the route that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) had taken during his Hijrah (migration) to Madinah, according to a report in Makkah Arabic daily.

The ministry said it had agreed to launch the initiative in collaboration with the Royal Commission for Makkah and the Holy Sites.

The project includes the development of 27 points on the Hijra Road consisting of hotels, rest houses, museums and others.

Under the initiative, titled the Road to Thaniyat Al-Wada, a plateau near Madinah, the travelers will be able to tread the same route that the Prophet (peace be upon him) had taken during his migration from Makkah in 622 AD.

The caravan will start from Ghar Thor, the cave on Mount Thor in Makkah where the Prophet and his closest companion Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had stayed hiding from the eyes of the enemy plotters for about three days before setting out on their journey to Yathrib, which would become famous as Al-Madinah Al-Munawwara, the enlightened city, after the Prophet settled there. The caravan will then stop at the location of the tent of Umm Maabad, who had hosted the Prophet on his way to Yathrib and where he had milked her sheep.

Umm Maabad’s place used to provide generous hospitality to travelers, but that was a year of scarcity with little rain. The drought had adversely affected people and cattle and Umm Maabad had no food to offer to her visitors. But when the Prophet rubbed the udders of Umm Maabad’s, milk came gushing and everyone drank to their fill. The incident has come to be known as a miracle of the Prophet (peace be upon him).

The caravan will then pass through the location where Suraqa Bin Malik met the Prophet. Suraqa had reached the location after following the Prophet’s footprints in the hope of winning the reward the Quraish had placed on his head.

It will also go through the site where the camel had tumbled down and then took a shortcut pointed out to the Prophet by the Bedouin guide Masoud Al-Aslami.

The caravan will stop at Thaniyat Al-Wada completing the journey to Madinah.

The ministry said there would be alternatives other than camels to reach Madinah taking the route, such as 4-wheel drive vehicles, fire balloons and motorbikes.

When the Prophet reached Quba on the outskirts of Yathrib on the 8th day of Rabiul Awwal, he had already traveled for eight days. The Hijra Road, which was known as the caravan road in olden times, is 380 kilometers long.

Haj Ministry giving final touches to project for revisiting Prophet’s Hijra route.

The museum was initially launched by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman during his recent visit to Madinah.

Municipality in Madinah fears
return of crickets, grasshoppers

June 24, 2019

MADINAH — Despite the announcement of the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs that about SR20 million were allocated to fight the migrating insects, the municipality here fears that crickets and grasshoppers might return in the not so distant future.

Ahmed Al-Badaani, director of the department of environmental health, said the municipality has monitored generations of crickets and grasshoppers laying their eggs at hidden places in a number of farms.

"These insects are waiting for suitable climate to hatch their eggs so their recurrence is quite possible," he said.

Badaani said the difficulty of dealing with these large numbers of migrating insects is caused by the lack of previous studies and also by the sensitivity of using chemicals at places which are crowded by visitors inside the Prophet's Mosque, the outside plazas and tourist and historical areas.

"We are extremely concerned about the safety of the visitors, especially children and old people," he said.

Badaani said the insects are able to fly fast looking for new havens which are suitable to them.

He admitted that there were signs that the migrating insects have disappeared from the residential areas as they were contained and controlled.

He explained that the municipality had signed contracts with four companies to fight the insects for 12 months.

Badaani said about 45 teams and 172 specialists, technicians, supervisors, workers and drivers were fighting the insects inside the farms, public parks and residential areas.

He said new means of fighting the migrating insects such as the electric traps have proven to be effective in fighting the crickets and grasshoppers.

Rumor denied: Reservations in Madinah mosque's
basement parking to continue

June 26, 2019

MADINAH — The Presidency of the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques has strongly denied reports being circulated on social media platforms claiming that it had cancelled the system of subscription for parking in the basement of the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah.

"We are not thinking of such a move. In fact we are considering to expand the capacity of the parking lot to benefit the largest number of subscribers," said an official of the presidency who did not want to be identified.

A number of Madinah residents and visitors to the city had complained that the subscription for the whole year in the basement parking of the mosque deprived many people of the chance to find space for parking their cars.

They said many of the subscribers would reserve their parking but keep them empty most of the time.

The residents said those who had the parking reservation would come only for a prayer or two during the whole day while some of them come for the Friday prayer alone.

They said some of the subscribers were traders who reserve the parking space so that they would be able to follow up business activity in shops they owned near the mosque.

The residents asked the presidency to enable the visitors and worshippers to find parking places according to availability especially on Fridays and during the fasting month of Ramadan.

Wail Rafiq, a Saudi resident, said he visited the mosque at various times and he found the parking reserved by the subscribers to be always empty.

"These parking lots are only occupied during the Maghreb and Isha prayers," he added.

He asked how could they allow a limited number of subscribers to reserve a large number of parking slots and keep them empty while depriving other visitors and worshippers of the opportunity to park their cars?

Rafiq said most of the people who had subscriptions in the basement parking were traders in the central area who, through the payment of the annual subscription fee, could guarantee themselves with parking space throughout the year.

The subscribers, on their part, defended themselves by claiming that it was important for them to find parking places whenever they came to the mosque especially as some of them accompanied elderly relatives.
