Okinawa Island was originally split into 3 kingdoms.. the central Kingdom won and united the island.. then they expanded and united the outer Ryukyuan Islands. The king then went to China to get acknowledgement and obtained the name Sho for himself and the name Ryukyu for his country

and maybe not.. Taiwan.. or at least Taipei is pretty modern looking.
Okinawa's on the other hand.. got tons of washed out buildings that either need a new layer of paint or paint period.. because the frequent typhoons and salt in the air makes quick damage of them

Well yeah not Taipei, but Taiwan and Okinawa are both dense "tropical" islands
