Sapporo is great. Ski jumping area feels natural, all these mountains, sea of green trees and ski-jumping hills integrated into that green environment. City from above looks overwhelming, but inside is strictly different.

Thanks for great photos!

The site of the former Sendai Castle, the castle is gone but you got a wonderful view over the city.

Let's change the scenery once again. But it's not yet time to go to Kanazawa yet. I wan't to show you a different side of Japan which doesn't show up on Skyscrapercity to often.

The pictures below were taken in Kogota, which has been renamed to Misato after an administrative rearrangement of the municipalities in this area just north of Sendai. But the station is still named Kogota, everyone living there will probably also use the former name.

I never planned to visit this town, but after I came back from the coastal town Ishinomaki which was severally hit by the 2011 Tsunami I had to change trains here. Instead of taking the 1st one I decided to have a short walk through this town, not knowing what to expect.

Mandatory link to my Ishinomaki pictures from both 2011 and 2015 which I posted earlier:
https://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1442186

But here's Kogota.

186. Ekimae = the street to the station

This is pretty much it for this town, I didn't show you the mall, but you ain't missing much. It had a pop. of 19,000 in 2005, it should now be lower. But looking at the pictures does give you one of the reasons why the population is shrinking in this part of Japan.

The best thing about the town is the railway yard, it's the base for a couple of smaller diesel lines in the area.

199.The train back to Sendai.

IMG_1544 by Momo1435, on Flickr

200. Just a short moment after leaving the station the train stopped right in the middle of a rice field. The train driver announced something via the intercom, but even if you speak Japanese it's hard to understand what he was saying.

201. In the distance there stood another train waiting, and the railways crossings were also closed.

Such a shame, to me the town doesn't look that bad - small, yes, but not bad. Heck anyone who has ever been through a small New Zealand or Australian town of that sort of size can tell you that it looks much worse on the whole. However, the depopulation of rural areas is mirrored in many developed countries, not just Japan. Even Sweden has depopulation in the rural and tiny cities around the country despite a fast growing general population. People simply don't want to live in the middle of nowhere with few amenities or jobs.

I think only dense countries in Europe have a rural area that is still buzzing - the UK, for example, has an idealisation of rural life and many want to own a house in a village and then commute to the cities there. Comparatively fewer people actually want to live in our cities given they have a reputation for being far less desirable to live in - the total opposite of Japan.

It's not about whether the city looks nice or not, it's the ghost town aspect of it. Go to the same town 20 years ago and you'd have people walking around and more importantly, young people. Notice how that city even is pretty dense for a countryside place (as a lot of japan's countryside towns are) but it's just "dead". All the young have evacuated to the regional cities and Tokyo. This "decay" of Japan is already beginning to knock on the regional cities suburbs and the main cities exurbs (Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya).

Always concerns me that people see this as an inevitable decline with no hope for recovery, ever. If it is inexorable, perhaps Japan is not the place for me after all.

A lot of Japanese see it as inevitable to varying degrees, but I'd say most think the population will stabilize eventually since this stuff is never permanent nor can you predict it. I think with Abe's new plans to help young couples we might stabilize at like 100 million (so 27 million less than our peak) and also if we take in more high skilled immigration. At 100 million many of the very countryside places will have no hope but it's still a very healthy number for the Japanese style of urbanity overall.

A lot of the previous steps have shown good signs and the birth rate has been slowly rising for the past 10 years.

If that doesn't work, our closest example is Germany but I'm not entirely sure if doing what they are doing would be the best for Japan. I have never even been to Germany so I have no idea.

The question is if Japan can turn around the decline will it have any effect on this kind of towns. I'm sceptical about that, with the decline it's not just people leaving a town, but also all the shops, services, restaurants, etc. If this area will get a boost it will most likely be directed the the larger towns, the small cities and most of all the bigger cities. Where's there are still things to do, things to see. There's nothing here in Kogota, it's just a railway depot, houses and a mall.

You already see a big different to Furukawa, the main settlement within the city of Osaki, Miyagi Prefecture, the town 10km to the west of Kogota. It has a population of about 75,000 (Osaki City = 135,000), not that big, but still much more amenities, plus a direct Shinkansen connection with Sendai. Those kind of towns will be the next in line after the big cities to profit from a possible new rise in population.
