Cathay Pacific swings axe in response to sharp drop in passenger numbers, with flights to Dublin, New York and Paris all hit, and a freeze on spending
Hong Kong carrier suspends long-haul services ahead of difficult winter
Analyst expects short-haul flights to mainland China to be next as airline also implements hiring freeze

Sep 12, 2019
South China Morning Post Excerpt

Cathay Pacific has responded to a sharp decline in passenger numbers in August by axing a number of short- and long-haul routes, cutting flights to other destinations, and ordering a hiring and spending freeze.

The airline revealed it was suspending flights on Thursday, a day after it announced a 38 per cent drop in customers in August, and said it expected September to also be challenging.

With a difficult winter ahead, and the anti-government protests in Hong Kong showing no signs of coming to an end, the carrier has suspended flights to Dublin, Medan in Indonesia, and daytime flights to Paris and Frankfurt.

Cathay said the Dublin route would be suspended on November 7, and from next year would only operate during the summer months.

It has also cut the number of flights to New York, Washington and Vancouver, with an analyst predicting that short-haul routes to mainland China are likely to be next.

Cathay Says It Fired Two Crew Members Amid Oxygen Bottle Probe
Sep 24, 2019
Bloomberg Excerpt

Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. said it fired two crew members at a unit as part of an investigation into why depleted emergency oxygen bottles are turning up on its flights.

Cathay Dragon detected an emergency oxygen bottle in a “low-pressure state” on a Sept. 21 flight to Hong Kong from Kuala Lumpur, it said in a statement Tuesday. All cabin crew have been suspended to facilitate the probe, according to the statement.

Since late August, Cathay has been disclosing the discovery of numerous depleted portable oxygen bottles on aircraft, prompting the embattled carrier to launch additional checks and investigations into the matter. The portable oxygen bottles are for cabin crew use in the event of depressurization.

In the latest incident, the depleted bottle was identified during a routine inspection, Cathay said. The case was reported to the Hong Kong police and the city’s civil aviation department.

Cathay feels heat in latest oxygen cases
4 October 2019
South China Morning Post Excerpt

The Cathay Pacific Group is under increasing scrutiny from *regulators after bosses from the city's two largest airlines were summoned for a second time over new unexplained cases of oxygen bottle depressurisation.

On Thursday, Cathay quickly ruled out crew sabotage in the three new incidents involving breathing equipment for flight attendants. The three events, *disclosed over the past two weeks, bring the total number of cases discovered over the past six weeks to 10.

Two flight attendants have been fired in one of those cases.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong's Civil Aviation Department (CAD) has grown increasingly concerned at the number of reports of alleged sabotage of the oxygen tank emergency equipment, which crew members would use to move around the cabin in the event of an emergency depressurisation.

"The CAD expresses concern and disappointment about the occurrence of similar incidents again, and has recalled the *management of Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon, requesting the two airlines seriously follow up on the incidents," the regulator said in a statement.

The city's aviation regulator responded to the first cases by hauling the bosses of Cathay *Pacific and Cathay Dragon for a meeting on September 20, to *demand extra improvements to aircraft security inspections, and on Thursday met unnamed executives from the two airlines.

Random spot checks would continue to ensure the airline's checks are strictly enforced, *according to the department.

Cathay Pacific lowers full-year profit expectations

Oct 18 (Reuters) - Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd on Friday lowered its expectations for full-year profit as a result of “incredibly challenging” conditions in its home market that were expected to persist for the rest of 2019.

The airline reported a 7.1% drop in passenger numbers for the month of September as travellers avoided Hong Kong due to widespread anti-government protests and said its second-half financial results were expected to be below the first half.

Cathay in August reported a HK$1.347 billion ($171.75 million) first-half profit. At that time, it said second-half profits were expected to be higher than the first-half, as is typically the case for the airline, based on seasonality.

Should HK Express (UO) also added to this thread?
Cathay Pacific bought them and own them 100%.

Let me think about how to do this as I need to separate out the UO threads from the combined HX/UO thread in this section. So far it seems UO is not going to be integrated into the CX family other than the frequent flyer program.

Cathay Pacific Puts Dollar Bond Sale on Ice After Cool Reception From Investors
21 October 2019
Dow Jones Newswires

Hong Kong's flagship carrier Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. shelved plans to sell its first U.S. dollar bonds in more than two decades after receiving lukewarm interest from potential investors, according to people familiar with the matter.

The airline has struggled with steep declines in passenger numbers in recent months and was embroiled in controversy after some of its employees took part in anti government protests in Hong Kong. Those actions drew criticism from Chinese authorities and threats to boycott its flights from Chinese businesses, prompting Cathay to fire dozens of employees and r eplace both its CEO and chairman.

Cathay recently raised 800 million Hong Kong dollars ($102 million) via a private placement of three-year bonds denominated in the city's local currency. The company said it would continue to monitor the U.S. dollar bond market in the future.

In late September, representatives of the airline had met with bond investors in Hong Kong and Singapore to drum up enthusiasm and familiarize them with its business ahead of a dollar bond sale. Cathay also tapped four large investment banks to help coordinate a deal, according to a document seen by The Wall Street Journal.

Declines in U.S. Treasury yields this year have made dollar bond funding an attractive option for many companies. The last time Cathay issued U.S. dollar bonds was in the 1990s, according to bankers. The airline has some outstanding loans and revolving credit lines, but doesn't have credit ratings from large global rating firms.
