Nevertheless, I saw the necessary topic in the Russian section. Now maybe our guys will figure out what they will tell. I’m erasing the first message.

I assume that it has something to do with the hoster "sinaimg.cn".
Perhaps that hoster is blocked by SSC because of security reasons.

It is not browser related.
I am not able to see the pictures in Edge, Firefox and Explorer within SSC.
But I am able to see them outside SSC straight in the browser.

I think Jan can tell us more about this.

^ it indeed appears that sinaimg.cn doesn't not allow hotlinking when the image url is called from a skyscrapercity.com page. If you load a full image link directly into your browser, it caches the images so you can see that image next time you load a skyscrapercity.com page.

I never thought that was possible to restrict some img links from websites to show and open certain images.

There's any way to add redundant links? How can we overcome this block?

You can use hosting services such as Imgur for an example.

Pagination issues

Hi,

I'm experiencing some issues in pagination in a forum. If I'm not logged in, the last page is 66, and I have to change to another page to achieve the page 76 (last actually).

Forum link: https://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=2142704

Regards!

Hi, I do not have access to the Skybar forum. It is listed as a private forum to me. Why is that?

^ not enough posts. One needs 100 before one can enter. This is done to prevent people from signing up for the wrong topics.

Just wanted to remind you about disabling the Polish language pack, which makes this forum unreadable if enabled by anyone.

The Polish language pack uses the ISO-8859-2 encoding to display Polish characters in the user interface. The character encoding setting in HTML (or in HTTP, where it's also possible) unfortunately applies to the whole website, so also to the contents of the posts.

In the English language version, the encoding in the HTML source is set to ISO-8859-1. Because this character set does not contain most Polish diacritics, the forum software reacts to Polish characters placed in the fields of the new post form in such a way that it converts them to HTML entities. See this fragment of the source:

It just so happens that ó is included in the ISO-8859-1 character set, but no other lowercase Polish diacritic characters are.

If someone has the Polish language pack active, the Polish characters in newly added posts are encoded just with ISO-8859-2. Therefore, when someone has the English version on (so he uses ISO-8859-1), he incorrectly sees the characters posted by the Polish version users. The web browser of such user is informed by the META tag in the source code of the forum that all the content of the website is encoded in ISO-8859-1, which actually isn't true as some posts are encoded in ISO-8859-2.

One possible solution would be to modify the Polish language pack so that it would use the ISO-8859-1 encoding with the Polish characters in the interface encoded as entities. Should be doable. But it would have to be repeated in case of any update of the language pack.

Another one would be converting the whole forum to UTF-8, which is a modern encoding standard, including almost all languages; actually not only just languages (even the poop emoji is there). Yet more languages are included e.g. in UTF-16. However, I am not sure but I think it may require converting the whole posts database, which is likely to take time because of its size.

One may also come up with an idea of switching the whole forum (all the language versions) to ISO-8859-2 – but it's not a solution because it would break the diacritics from some other languages, like that "a" with a circle above it, or even "a umlaut". If I am not mistaken, ISO-8859-2 also contains all German characters – but "a umlaut" must be on a different position in the set, so even this would break. Definitely not a solution.

The simplest workaround is just to disable the Polish pack. We really don't need it in the Polish section.

Here is an example of a url of youtube video

PHP Code:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhvsXkbrA0U
What you do is copy everything that comes after the 'watch?v=' part, in this case 'RhvsXkbrA0U'. That goes in between youtube tags, like this:

PHP Code:
[youtube]RhvsXkbrA0U[/youtube
That should render into this:

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO!

This forum gets more and more annoying to use because of this simple issue which was already resolved some time ago. It is very tiring to repeatedly explain all the users who switch to Polish language pack for whatever reason that they must switch back to English. They don't even have any clue that their posts look like gibberish (like this one, recently), because to them everything looks fine.

I am afraid you will get a quick solution for the issue with the Polish language pack.
The last time VerticalScope was active in this thread was exactly 3 month ago.

There are many other (major) issues within the SSC with more impact on the usability like the search function still unsolved by VerticalScope.
So I doubt they will give the issue with the Polish language pack a higher priority.

I know there are other issues. But still, this is a regression. It used to be fixed some time ago, and I presume the language pack has been re-enabled by accident, and that it can be disabled easily.

Regarding the search feature, it works poorly for a very very long time. We all are used to that fact, and we also have developed ways to mitigate that. But the broken encoding severely hampers the most important forum feature — possibility to read it. Because how you're going to read that?
